Extremely low pressure brought down air traffic over northern Norway Airline company Widerøe has in its almost 90 year history never experienced this kind of weather.

The past months have seen extraordinarily rough weather along the north Norwegian coast. Early this week came another extreme. The air pressure dropped to a level not seen in several decades.

According to the Norwegian meteorological institute, the air pressure across major parts of the region was below 940 hectopascal, a level that makes flying unsafe.

The Widerøe company that serves most of the regional routes put almost its whole aircraft fleet on the ground.

Comment: It was only a few weeks ago, on 20th January, that parts of Europe saw the highest atmospheric pressure readings ever recorded.

Violent jet stream helps bring Boeing 747 across the North Atlantic in record time - less than 5 hours

ba 112
The currently ongoing very dynamic pattern over North Atlantic and Europe resulted in some remarkable records within commercial flights! The Boeing 747 of British Airways (flight BA112) from New York on its way to London most likely set the new subsonic flight speed record of travel time across the North Atlantic.

Due to the exceptionally favorable wind within the powerful westerly jet stream, it arrived in London in just 4 hours and 56 minutes. Normally, the average travel time between New York and London is around 6 hours and 13 minutes. According to Flightradar24, if this data is confirmed, the British Airways now retakes the fastest subsonic New York-London crossing from Norwegian airliner.

See what a violent jet streak can produce over the North Atlantic - a very dynamic pattern and therefore deep cyclones with significant sea waves towards western Europe:

There has been no snow month like January — at least for 150 years.

Ian Hubbard, an Environment Canada meteorologist, said 179.8 cm of snow was registered at the Sydney airport in January, which is an all-time record.

"Records go back to 1870," he said. "It broke the previous record which was 163.03 cm in 1965."

Five January days registered at least 15 cm of snow and last year only five days registered that amount all winter.

In terms of snow accumulation, records at the Sydney airport from December, January and February, the most snowfall recorded was in 1965 — 426.1 cm. So far this year through December and January there has been 217 cm of snow.

Winter storm brings up to 15 inches of snowfall in just 8 hours to Minnesota

snow fall
A town southwest of Mankato reported more than 15 inches!

It snowed hard for a solid eight hours or so across southern Minnesota and the result is as much of a foot of powder accumulating in some locations. But there's one clear-cut winner with Lake Crystal - just southwest of Mankato - reporting a massive 15.5 inches.

As of 12 p.m., most of the snow has ended outside of some flurries or light snow. Generally, it appears that the Mankato and Rochester areas picked up 7-10 inches while slightly higher totals accumulated in southwest Minnesota, near Marshall.

The metro area (leaderboard for the metro further down in the story) had varying totals, with lower amounts on the north side and higher totals in the southern suburbs.
