Extreme weather creates chaos across Europe

High winds and heavy snow in Europe on Monday stranded thousands of travelers, kept schoolchildren at home and even played havoc with international diplomacy.

It was the second day running of nasty weather across the continent, with Britain still digging out from its deepest snowfall in four years.

The snowed-over runways in Brussels on Monday provoked about 90 flight cancellations and some 100 delays, including for the plane carrying Israel's Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu back home.

He tweeted a video from his plane that opened with a shot of the white tarmac at the close of his European visit marked by the US recognising Jerusalem as Israel's capital.

Grafton residents were treated to huge chunks of hail.
Extreme weather hit the Australian states of New South Wales and Queensland this past weekend. The Australian Daily Examiner described the scene in Grafton, New South Wales, where there were:
more than 50 calls for help after a large hail storm caused widespread damage on Saturday afternoon.

A large thunderstorm hit Grafton around 1.20pm, with hail the size of tennis balls battering some parts of the region.

SES Clarence Nambucca region controller Michael Harper said SES resources from neighbouring towns were called in to respond to the large numbers of requests for help.

"We had about 50 or more call outs on Saturday afternoon, and they were virtually all for broken windows, smashed skylights and roof damage," Mr Harper said.

"It was a busy afternoon for them, we had about 10 crews out cleaning up and helping people, with most jobs completed by 10pm that same day, with only one or two left over the finish the next day."

Mr Harper said Saturday's hail storm was the first major storm to hit Grafton since the start of the storm season.

"There were hail stones up to seven to eight centimetres in size which is quite large," he said.

"The storm went for about 15 or 20 minutes,
and in that time it did cause some damage.

Heaviest snowfall in four years brings travel chaos to UK

In case you hadn't noticed, it's snowing today.

And it seems to be pretty heavy in places, with some areas of the country cut off, parts of the London Underground shut, airports closed and a lot of disruption elsewhere.

But just how heavy is the snowfall? Well, according to experts we haven't seen weather like this in the south for four years.

So yeah, it's pretty snowy out there today.

The Met Office told Metro.co.uk that you have to go all the way back to 2013 to get similar weather in the region.

Places like Wales and Shawbury in Shropshire experienced around 15cm of the white stuff, and some Welsh hills even experienced around 80cm of snow. Incredible.

A British woman has died after being struck by lightning while playing golf with her husband on a romantic holiday in Turkey.

Sarah Oldham, 39, suffered a cardiac arrest after being hit by a lightning bolt as she sheltered under an umbrella when it started to rain on the course in Belek, on Turkeys south coast.

Mrs Oldham, from March, Cambridgeshire, was taken to hospital and eventually airlifted back to the UK, but died 12 days after the accident.

Mrs Oldham and her husband Alex, 36, had arrived in Turkey on November 17, and were enjoying their third round of golf in as many days when disaster struck.

Mr Oldham says he looked round after hearing 'an almighty crack of thunder', only to see his wife lying unconscious on the ground.

Cyclone Ockhi: Mumbai records highest December rainfall in 50 years

Owing to Cyclone Ockhi, the city recorded the highest-ever December rainfall on Tuesday, in just 12 hours. Rainfall during 8.30am-8.30pm at the IMD's Santacruz observatory was 36mm, which beat the previous record of 31.4mm, recorded on December 12, 1967.

As Ockhi came close to the city on Tuesday, it brought in a day full of rains and gusty winds, leading to a steep drop in temperatures. The maximum temperatures recorded at both the Santacruz and Colaba observatories were 10 degrees lower than on Monday. As a result, at several places, noon-time unusually was much cooler than dawn. Also, there was barely a two-degree difference between maximum and minimum temperatures at most places.

Ockhi's threat had prompted the government to keep schools shut, which lead to an easing of school-time traffic. For adults, it was business as usual, barring minor absenteeism, though organizations had issued advisories to employees. While rainfall was moderate, rumour mongers were busy creating panic with fake news on the sea link and various roads, prompting the BMC to tweet: "Please don't create panic." In fact, no transport disruption was reported from anywhere in the city. The trains ran, as did the buses and cars.

Dramatic footage shows a whirling waterspout forming off the Italian coast before making its way inland.

The weather phenomenon was captured in the north-western Italian city of Sanremo, on the Mediterranean coast, on 1 December.

It caused damage to central and western parts of the city and the Old Port area, but reports say that no one was seriously injured.

The beach was closed on the popular Italian Riviera tourist destination, while there were also reports of shattered windows, falling chimneys and damage to vehicles.

A snow warning has also been issued for parts of Liguria, which has experienced a dramatic drop in temperatures over the past week.

Waterspouts fall into two categories: fair weather waterspouts and tornadic waterspouts, NOAA's National Weather Service explains.
