Stormy weather: Woman swept away by floodwater in New Zealand - Over half a metre of rainfall in 24 hours

A mother of 11 from the Glorivale community has died after being swept away in a swollen West Coast river.

A source told the Herald that Rejoice Steadfast had been missing since yesterday afternoon near the flooded Haupiri River, near Gloriavale, in the West Coast's Grey District.

Rejoice Steadfast is the daughter-in-law of Gloriavale secretary and treasurer Fervent Steadfast.

Police this morning said a Search and Rescue team had recovered her body at 8am.

Her death has been referred to the coroner.

A Gloriavale spokeswoman declined to comment this morning.

Flash flooding hits north Trinidad - Second such event within 3 weeks

Divali celebrations on Tuesday were again marred by heavy showers and flash flooding across parts of north Trinidad.

Viral videos showed a car which had been caught in flood waters along the Eastern Main Road in St Augustine. Heavy flooding was also reported near Pasea Road in Tunapuna.

The Office of Disaster Preparedness and Management (ODPM) warned the public to stay away from the Eastern Main Road along Tunapuna and St Augustine as the roadway was impassable up until midday Tuesday.

"Citizens are kindly advised to proceed with caution on the nation's roadways, as heavy rainfall has been reported across the country."

Thousands of Victorians were left power after a slow-moving storm caused flash flooding in Melbourne, with half of the city's November rainfall arriving in just three hours.

More than 30mm of rain fell after 9am on Melbourne Cup Day, causing train delays and soaking racegoers at Flemington.

Flooding has caused chaos along the Kingsway, at the tunnel entrance onto the CityLink, as well as in parts of Southbank, Rowville, Balwyn North, Windsor, Hawthorn, Ashburton and Narre Warren.

The Jordanian Embassy in Kuwait warned Jordanian citizens of extreme rainy weather conditions on Tuesday, November 6, 2018.

The Embassy said in a warning through its Twitter account: "The Jordanian embassy wishes the Jordanian community to take precautions during the rainy weather and follow the instructions issued by official authorities in Kuwait, wishing all safety."

Heavy rain continued hammering across Kuwait since yesterday, accompanied by hail and occasional lightning and thunderstorms, which caused water to heavily flood the streets of Kuwait city.

The National Disaster Mitigation Agency (BNPB) reported that at least two children were killed during floods that swamped Padang, West Sumatra over the weekend.

The children were identified as Jihat Melani, 6, and Pasilah Azhan, 10, the agency has said in a release.

The flood inundated around 1,400 houses in seven districts, including Pauh, Lubuk Kilangan, Lubuk Begalung and Koto Tangah.

"The Padang administration has declared an emergency status for seven days from Nov. 3 to Nov. 9," BNPB spokesperson Sutopo Purwo Nugroho said in a statement.

Man dies after his car flips over in flash flood in Saudi Arabia

In the floods that hit Saudi Arabia's Qassim governorate, a man lost his life after his car flipped over.

The incident took place in Boqaya Valley, according to a news report in Akhbaar 24.

In the video that surfaced online, we can see the car in the midst of flood water and rescue officers helping the men out of the vehicle.

Seven men were stuck in the car when the officers pulled them out from the submerged car.

Ten people, including a family of nine, have died in floods around Palermo on the southern island of Sicily. It comes one week into Italy's worst storms and flooding in decades, which have claimed the lives of at least 20 people.

The family, including children aged one, three and 15, were found in their villa in Casteldaccia after the Milicia river burst its banks and submerged their house, rescue services said on Sunday. Separately in Sicily, another person was found dead in his jeep after being hit by flood water, while two other people are still missing.

Update: Reuters reports death toll rises to 17, 14 million trees destroyed
Heavy rain and gales devastating parts of Italy have claimed two more lives, taking the overall death toll to at least 17, and laid waste to vast swathes of forest.

A German tourist died on Friday when hit by lightning on the island of Sardinia while another person struck by lightning several days ago died in hospital, Italy's Civil Protection Agency said on Saturday.

A spokeswoman said 17 deaths related to the severe weather had been reported to the Agency so far.

Many of the victims to date have been killed by falling trees. Coldiretti, the association of Italian agricultural companies, said in a statement that gales had destroyed around 14 million trees, many in the far north.

Areas from the far northeast to Sicily in the southwest have been affected by the storms, with the worst damage in the northern regions of Trentino and Veneto - the region around Venice - where villages and roads have been cut off by landslides.

In the Alps near Belluno, 100 km (60 miles) north of Venice, pine trees and red spruces were snapped wholesale like matchsticks.

The surface of the Comelico Superiore dam, farther north near the Austrian border, was covered with the trunks of trees that had fallen into the Piave river.

"We'll need at least a century to return to normality," Coldiretti said.
Update: Nov 5th: Flooding and strong winds from Italy's deadly storms have claimed the lives of over 30 people, rescue services have said.

More footage has emerged showing the devastating storm damage.
