Two people died in flash flooding in southern Spain after heavy rainfall brought by Storm Filomena.

While central and northern areas of the country, including the capital Madrid, were brought to a standstill after record snowfall, coastal areas of the southern Andalusia Region recorded heavy rainfall. According to figures from the country's AEMET weather agency, Estepona in Malaga province recorded 208.4mm of rain on 08 January 2021, with snow reported in higher elevations.

Over 50,000 households hit by floods in south Thailand

Floods and landslides have struck again in southern Thailand, affecting the 4 provinces of Songkhla, Yala, Narathiwat and Pattani. Authorities report 3 people have died as a result.

Flooding began around 04 January after heavy rain influenced by the North East Monsoon and an area of low pressure off the coast of Peninsular Malaysia, where flooding has also affected thousands of people since the start of the year.

According to Thailand's Meteorological Department, in a 24 hour period to 05 January, Yala recorded 141.9mm of rain and Narathiwat 71.7mm.

According to Thailand's Department of Disaster Prevention and Mitigation (DDPM), as many as 58,497 households are affected across over 30 districts, with 907 people displaced.

Deadly landslides triggered by heavy rainfall kill at least 11 in West Java Province, Indonesia

At least 11 people have died after heavy rain triggered landslides in western Indonesia.

Two landslides struck in quick succession in the village of Cihanjuang in Cimanggung District, Sumedang Regency in West Java Province on 09 January 2021.

According to the country's disaster authority BNPB, the first landslide occurred around 16:00 and the second at around 19:30 local time. BNPB blamed heavy rainfall and unstable soil conditions for the landslides.

Motorists stuck as floods, rains lash Montego Bay, Jamaica

Several motorists have been trapped on the Long Hill main road near King Gate in Montego Bay, St James amid flood rain.

Several inches of rushing water and debris have covered the roadway which leads to Anchovy, Lethe, Wiltshire and other communities in upper St James.

Residents witnessing the frightening situation said drains which have not been cleaned for months have contributed to the problem.

Heavy rainfall brings flooding to Casablanca, Morocco

The start of 2021 was marked by heavy rainfall across Morocco, Casablanca was one of the worst affected regions, with floods causing significant infrastructural damage to the city.

Heavy rains started pounding the area at the beginning of the week. By Tuesday night it culminated in what could only be described as nightmarish floods in Casablanca. Public transport shut down and entire neighborhoods were flooded. A quick-witted Twitter user commented that the city is "slowly marking its transition to becoming the new Venice."

Casablanca, a home to over 3 million people has been ravaged by floods for over three days now, yet there are still no concrete reports on the scope of infrastructural damage to the city.

The people of Casablanca are in shock, sharing pictures of the apocalyptical weather and floods on social media. Horror stories of destroyed infrastructure, monstrous traffic, and closed schools and businesses are flooding Twitter and other social media.

At least six people have died and nearly 50,000 evacuated in Malaysia after monsoon rains pounded the country's east coast, authorities said, causing what residents described as the worst flooding in half a century.

Heavy rains continued to batter the region on Friday, swelling the number of people abandoning their homes to more than 47,000, officials said.

"I have lost everything. The water has covered my roof," 59-year-old factory worker Tan Kong Leng told AFP news agency, tears filling his eyes.

50,000 people affected by floods in Batticaloa, Sri Lanka

The Disaster Management Centre (DMC) in Sri Lanka reports severe weather, including high winds, lightning, heavy rain and flooding has affected over 50,000 people across the country since the start of the year.

Most of those affected were in Batticaloa, Eastern Province, where 12 division have seen flooding since 03 January 2021. Sri Lanka's Meteorological Department reported 142.4mm of rain fell in Batticaloa in 24 hours to 04 January.

Over 18,000 people have been affected by floods in Kattankudy, around 13,000 in Manmunai North and 8,000 in Eravur Pattu. DMC report 8 houses have been damaged across Batticaloa district as a result. No displacements or injuries were reported.

Deadly floods in North Sulawesi and West Nusa Tenggara, Indonesia - at least 3 killed

Disaster authorities in Indonesia report at least least 3 people have died in recent flood incidents in North Sulawesi and West Nusa Tenggara Provinces. Meanwhile flooding in Lhokseumawe City in Aceh Province has damaged over 2,000 homes.

National Disaster Agency BNPB reported flash flooding in Bima Regency, West Nusa Tenggara Province from 05 January 2021. At least 2 people have died and around 90 homes were damaged.

The previous day, high intensity rain falling on unstable ground triggered landslides and flash flooding in soil conditions in the Sangihe Islands in North Sulawesi Province. BNPB reported the sub-districts of Tahuna, Kendahe, Maganitu, South Maganitu, Tabukan Selatan Tengah and Tabukan Selatan Tenggara were all affected. At least 1 person died, over 200 buildings damaged and 223 families displaced. Flood waters were up to 1.5 metres deep in some areas.

Chennai, India records highest rainfall for a January day since 1915

The sudden downpour on Tuesday left many roads inundated in Chennai and brought significant inflows into waterbodies. The city recorded the highest quantum of rainfall on a single day in January since 1915.

While the northeast monsoon extending to January is not uncommon in Chennai, what came as a surprise was the intensity of rain lashing the city and neighbouring districts since Monday night.

Officials of the India Meteorological Department attributed it to an easterly trough over north Tamil Nadu.

Nungambakkam and Meenambakkam recorded 6 cm and 5 cm of rainfall respectively for 24 hours ending 8.30 a.m. on Tuesday. However, by 6.30 p.m., the two stations had recorded 8 cm and 10 cm rain respectively. Many other places, such as Taramani, received 12 cm, West Tambaram 10 cm and Poonamallee 7 cm.
