Stingrays washed ashore at beach in Oman

dead rays
Numerous stingrays and mackerels were found dead by morning walkers on Monday.

Out for an early morning walk, Maryam Khalfan was in for a shock as she and her family kept coming across stingrays and another fish one after the other.

"Interesting was the fact that they were far away from the water, so maybe it happened during the high tide," said Maryam and added, "The more I walked, the more fish I saw."

The majority of the fish were spotted opposite Masjid Fatma on Al Hail beach.

Thousands of fish have been found dead along Auckland's Beachlands coastline, worrying locals as a strong stench lingers.

Mandy Reeves was going for a walk on Monday when she noticed a smell near the Pine Harbour marina.

But it wasn't until around 1pm on Tuesday when she discovered a sea of dead fish.

Reeves told the Herald there were thousands of the same type of fish dead in the water and on the rocks.

"There are thousands of them. On Monday there was a smell but no sign of fish. Tuesday I was down near the marina and I thought oh gosh what is that stuff?

"And the coastline was covered in white. There were thousands of them.

"They were white-silvery long fish. It's very smelly, it really stinks down there. But the water looks relatively clear."

Baby manatee Lativa was so sick that her caregivers had to put a flotation device on her to allow her to come to the surface to breathe.

Others have not been so lucky: the gentle marine mammals are dying at an unprecedented rate in Florida, and there are not enough animal hospital "beds" to handle the crisis.

When two-year-old Lativa was rescued earlier this month, she was suffering from severe exposure to brevetoxins, potent neurotoxins produced by red tides or algae blooms that have contaminated some bodies of water in the US state.

"She was found beached and they never beach themselves... she was completely unresponsive," recounts Molly Lippincott, animal care manager for ZooTampa at Lowry Park.

The carcass of a second basking shark has washed up on the coast of West Cork just days after the discovery of an unusually fresh specimen 20km away.

According to Cork Beo, the second large fish was found at the weekend near Courtmacsherry and is believed to have been dead for some time.

Another basking shark carcass measuring a whopping seven metres that beached at Inchydoney last week presented a rare opportunity for marine biologists to examine relatively fresh remains.

Endangered blue whale washes up on beach in Namibia

The dead body of a rare, endangered species of a blue whale washed up on a beach in Namibia on Tuesday with lesions suggesting it collided with a ship, scientists said.

A whale-watcher first spotted the mammal on Monday, "floating upside down" off Namibia's port town of Walvis Bay, conservationist Simon Elwen told AFP.

The body drifted to shore on Tuesday morning, revealing a broken pectoral fin.

"The balance of evidence at the moment strongly suggests it was struck by a ship very close to the bay," Elwen said, noting the freshness of the animal´s skin suggested the incident took place near to land.
