Winter frozen in place for many portions of Saskatchewan

SNOW
This winter season is one that just doesn't seem to want to go away.

Snow, wind and blizzards, and sudden extreme drops in temperature from warmer to cold have been a common theme this winter in Saskatchewan.

With the calendar reading mid-March, there is plenty of snow that needs to melt in order to help it feel more like spring. However, if Mother Nature decides to warm up quickly, there is a chance for a lot of pooling water in and around Saskatoon.

A village in the eastern province of Muş has been completely blanketed in snow due to continuous precipitation, with villagers opening small tunnels to reach the surface and visit their neighbors or look after their stables.

"I have not seen such snowfall for the last 30 years. It swallowed the entire village," Sabri Yöndem, a 79-year-old resident of the Yukarıyongalı village, told the İhlas News Agency.

The village has a population of around 700 residents and is located at an altitude of about 1,800 meters.

"I start the day shoveling the snow and opening tunnels to reach the stables to feed animals," he added.

A cold wave and heavy snowfall that crippled life in Istanbul for four long days, disrupting traffic and forcing schools to close, will finally leave on March 14, meteorologists have said.

The heavy precipitation that started early March 10 reached its peak on March 13, with 12 kilograms of snow falling over a square meter in Turkey's most populous city.

The height of the snow reached some 50 centimeters in districts on the Anatolian side. Precipitation caused fog over the Bosphorus, with the field of vision decreasing to some 200 meters on main highways.

Snow-covered Iceland with mostly clear skies provided a good opportunity for a satellite image on March 1, when NASA's Terra, the flagship Earth observing satellite, crossed Iceland 705 km above the Earth's surface. The picture is a so-called MODIS image, specifically focusing on vegetation, snow and ice.

Clouds covered the north shore of the country, and there were a few clouds in the south as well.

The past month was exceptionally stormy, bringing us heavy snow again and again, causing repeated road closures, requiring endless snow removal, and testing the patience of the nation. Still, it is not the worst winter in terms of weather in recent years.

A storm moving through Southcentral Alaska dropped up to a foot of snow in some parts of the Anchorage area.

An intensifying storm system just south of the Kenai Peninsula caused National Weather Service forecasters to upgrade a winter weather advisory to a winter storm warning in effect until 1 a.m. Sunday.

The snowfall had largely stopped by 9 p.m., and the 11.8 inches of snow tallied by that point made Saturday the 13th snowiest day on record for Anchorage, according to the National Weather Service.
