It's already been a deadly year for Florida manatees.
More sea cows deaths have been documented through the first two months of the year than were recorded during those same two months in 2019 and 2020 combined, according to Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission records.
Through Feb. 12, the state recorded 317 manatee deaths, though former FWC commissioner Ron Bergeron said he thought the number was closer to 350 sea cows.
Manatee advocates said the die-off is another example of poor water quality.
Avalanches triggered by warm weather struck two municipalities in Japan's northernmost prefecture of Hokkaido on Feb. 28, claiming the life of a 44-year-old woman, police said.
The avalanches occurred in the village of Akaigawa and in the town of Kamikawa. In Akaigawa, Remi Otsuka, an office worker from Tokyo's Setagaya Ward who was part of a group of six backcountry skiers, was caught in the avalanche at about 12:35 p.m. on Feb. 28. Police said she was later rescued but was confirmed dead at a hospital.

According to Oceana Brazil's report, the South American country throws some 325,000 tons of plastic into the sea
Some of Brazil's beaches have been covered by a "tsunami" of rubbish, leaving once pristine coastlines completely engulfed in everything from plastic bags and bottles to children's toys and dead fish, Brazilian environmentalists have said.
On a tour of a beach just 20 kilometres from Rio de Janeiro's iconic Copacabana, environment protection activist Ricardo Gomes explained the gravity of the situation as he tried to clean up some of the waste on Isla do Catalao.
"These are the 8 million tonnes of plastic that reach the ocean each year, suffocating marine life and threatening the existence of Man on the planet," Mr Gomes said.
"This is a crime, it is not just a crime against the City of Rio de Janeiro, it is not a crime only against the population of Rio de Janeiro. This evil that we do in Rio de Janeiro, what the people of Rio de Janeiro do, what we do to the Ocean is a global crime," he added.

As of 26 February flood water remained in Genuk but had mostly subsided in other areas.
Explosive activity continues. Volcanic Ash Advisory Center (VAAC) Washington warned about a volcanic ash plume that rose up to estimated 15000 ft (4600 m) altitude or flight level 150.
A young dead whale has washed up and been stranded off the West Cork coast.
The humpback whale came ashore off Coney Island, west Roaringwater Bay yesterday afternoon.
While humpback sightings are rare, they have been increasing in recent years.
Humpback strandings are very rare, however. According to the Irish Whale and Dolphin Group (IWDG) only eight have been recorded in Ireland since 1893.
This is only the second such stranding of a humpback ever recorded in Cork.
The humpback whale recently washed up in Roaringwater Bay. IWDG hope to visit the stranded whale today. Images courtesy of Robbie Shelly and Helen Tilson of @SchullSeafari pic.twitter.com/N9lUDQbIN4
