A pod of 230 pilot whales was found stranded on the rugged west coast of Tasmania Wednesday, with Australian officials saying only half appeared to be alive.

Aerial images showed a devastating scene of dozens of black glossy mammals strewn across a long beach, stuck on the waterline where the frigid southern ocean meets the sand.

Locals covered survivors with blankets and doused them with buckets of water to keep them alive, as other whales nearby tried in vain to twitch free and yet more lay dead.

The whales were "stranded near Macquarie Harbour" said the state's Department of Natural Resources and Environment.


Comment: This latest event comes a day after 14 sperm whales died in a mass stranding on nearby King Island.

An earthquake measuring 6.0 magnitude has hit near the region of Kamchatsk Staryy in Russia.

A strong earthquake measuring 6.0 magnitude on the Richter scale has been registered this evening in the Bering Sea, off the eastern coast of Russia. According to Asismet @Asismet_IF, the tremor occurred at 6:23pm local time. Its epicentre was placed 253km east of Ust'-Kamchatsk, at a depth of 10km.

The location of this quake is said to be along the Bering fault, and related to the Bering Kresla plate boundary shear zone.

Storm delivers 4 inches of early snow to Mount Shasta, California

The early-season storm that soaked Northern California on Sunday also brought some much-needed snowfall to the region's high-elevation areas. Lassen Volcanic National Park received a nice coat of new snow, temporarily closing the park's highway. Now, Monday morning photos of Mount Shasta are surfacing with the mountain already looking in early-winter form.

More than a dozen sperm whales have died and washed ashore on King Island, north of Tasmania.

The whales appeared to be young males and were dead when the stranding was reported on Monday afternoon, Tasmania's Department of Natural Resources and Environment said on Tuesday.

There are at least 14 carcasses on the island's west coast.

Wildlife biologists and a vet are travelling to the island to investigate, while Parks and Wildlife Services staff are on site monitoring the situation.

"It is possible the whales were part of the same bachelor pod - a group of younger male sperm whales associating together after leaving the maternal group," a department spokesperson said.

The natural reserve of San Nicolas is only 80 kilometres away from Rosario where protesters earlier condemned what they described as intentional damage to the wetlands.

An 89-year-old grandmother died after she and her grandson, who ran for help, were attacked by dogs in Golden, Colorado, officials said.

The woman died of her injuries on Sunday, Sept. 18, Emily Gedeon, the city's communications and community engagement manager, confirmed in an email to McClatchy News.

She said there was no update available on the condition of the boy. During the attack on Sept. 14, the 12-year-old boy ran to a neighbor's home for help, McClatchy News previously reported.

Responding officers found a trail of blood leading into a home and also found two dogs attacking the woman in the backyard.

Police resorted to using "tasers and less lethal shotguns" to try to free the woman from the dogs after verbal commands were unsuccessful, according to a news release. Once more officers arrived, they were able to rescue the woman.

In a tragic incident, at least 18 people lost their lives across nine districts of Bihar on Monday. The lightening strikes in the state have killed around 216 people so far this year.

The latest lightning deaths have been reported from Purnia (4), Araria (4), Supaul (3), Jamui (2) and one each in Banka, Begusarai, Sheikhpura Nawada and Saran, according to figures from state disaster management department.

Meanwhile, Chief Minister has announced an ex-gratia of Rs 4 lakh to the next of the kin of the deceased, according to a report in Times of India.

A warning has been issued by Patna meteorological department for lightening and thunderstorms at isolated places across south Bihar districts on Tuesday.

A magnitude 7.6 earthquake shook Mexico's central Pacific coast on Monday, killing at least one person and setting off a seismic alarm in the rattled capital on the anniversary of two earlier devastating quakes.

There were at least some early reports of damage to buildings from the quake, which hit at 1:05 p.m. local time, according to the U.S. Geologic Survey, which had initially put the magnitude at 7.5.

It said the quake was centered 37 kilometers (23 miles) southeast of Aquila near the boundary of Colima and Michoacan states and at a depth of 15.1 kilometers (9.4 miles).

President Andrés Manuel López Obrador said via Twitter that the secretary of the navy told him one person was killed in the port city of Manzanillo, Colima when a wall at a mall collapsed.
