Italy: 3 killed after avalanche near French border

The men were taking a mountain guide course in the Aosta Valley when the avalanche swept them away. The course leader survived the avalanche, alerting emergency services after descending to the valley.

A mountain rescue team recovered on Friday the bodies of three Italian skiers, after they were caught the day before in an avalanche in the border area between France and Italy. while training to be Alpine guides.

The National Alpine Rescue Corps resumed their search for the missing men, having suspended it on Thursday due to poor weather conditions.

The bodies of the men were taken to Aosta for formal identification.

An avalanche in northwestern B.C. killed one heliskier and left three others injured Tuesday afternoon (April 11).

A group of five was touring around a remote mountain lodge about 150 kilometres north of Stewart when they were caught in the slide, Last Frontier Heliskiing said in a statement. Three of them were injured and one died.

BC Emergency Health Services said it responded with three ambulance crews to the area at 3:37 p.m. and took one person to hospital via air ambulance. It didn't comment on the condition of any of the other skiers.

There's been a disaster on the world's tallest peak.

Three Sherpa climbers were navigating the Khumbu Icefall on Mount Everest when a serac on the glacier above them collapsed. According to reports in The Himalayan Times and the website Everest Chronicle, the three Sherpas climbers were buried by the avalanche on Wednesday morning and were reported missing after a series of snowstorms in the region had created unstable snow conditions.

The following video shows the massive avalanche that occurred on Wednesday, which was shared by climber Lakpa T. Sherpa and uploaded to his Instagram account:

Photos from Mauna Kea's summit show a springtime dusting of snow.

And forecasters say flurries are possible through Thursday night. Some spots could see up to an inch of snow.

Mauna Kea Access Road is closed above the 9,200-foot elevation given the inclement weather.

Five-year-old boy dies after being attacked by dogs in South Africa

The Eastern Cape Health Department said the attack on five-year-old Zibele Mthi by two dogs, believed to be pit bulls, on Good Friday, confirmed the urgent need for the country to take decisive action on the breed.

Spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo has conveyed his condolences to Mthi's family, after he was found lying on the side of the road in Dyamana in the Amathole District, following the attack.

The little boy was rushed to Frere Hospital by his 35-year-old mother, Bongeka Mthi, where he succumbed to his injuries on Sunday.

The founder of the Sizwe Kupelo Foundation says the Minister of Agriculture, Land Reform and Rural Development, Thoko Didiza is busy working on an amendment to the Animal Matters Amendment Act of 1993.

Flash floods in south Florida after 25.9 inches of rain in 24 hours

Torrential rain of over 25 inches (635 mm) fell in 24 hours in Fort Lauderdale in South Florida, USA, triggering flash floods.

Stranded cars littered the streets around Fort Lauderdale, the City of Dania Beach and surrounding parts of Broward County. As of early 13 April, Fort Lauderdale Police reported at least 8 roads in the city were still impassable.

The Mayor of Fort Lauderdale, Dean Trantalis, declared a state of emergency after flooding overnight from 12 to 13 April 2023. He said the amount of rain was unprecedented. Emergency crews received over 900 calls for assistance and worked continuously through the night to carry out rescues.

Mt. Shiveluch spewed lava and ash over Kamchatka in Russia's Far East

The Shiveluch volcano in the Russian Far East erupted on Tuesday morning local time, throwing a plume of ash up to 20km into the atmosphere. The Kamchatka authorities are monitoring the lava flow, while regional residents were told to stay inside and wear masks.

The eruption began around 1am and reached its maximum five hours later, according to local volcanologists. Plumes of hot ash rose into the sky, followed by rockfalls and lava flow from the mountain, which rises 2,500 meters above the Pacific Ocean.

Woman dies after pack of dogs attack her outdoors in McCreary County, Kentucky

The name of the woman killed by a pack of dogs in Kentucky has been released.

The McCreary County sheriff says the victim has been identified as 61-year-old Wilma Lee Ridner.

According to the sheriff, the attack happened early Wednesday morning on Slab Vanover Road, which is off Highway 90 west of Cumberland Falls.

The sheriff's office is still investigating what led to the attack, but the sheriff says Ridner lived in that area and the attack happened outdoors.

An earthquake measuring 6 has shaken the seabed a few hundred kilometres off Vancouver Island.

The National Tsunami Warning Center in Alaska says a dangerous wave is not expected from the quake.

The U.S. Geological Survey website shows the quake was only lightly felt in areas ranging from Port Hardy, just over 200 kilometres from the epicentre, to Kitimat, more than 500 kilometres away.

Earthquakes Canada estimated the quake that happened at about 8 a.m. local time was magnitude 5.8, while the tsunami warning centre said it reached 6.2.

Iran - 3 killed, hundreds displaced after floods in North West

The Iranian Red Crescent Society (IRCS) reported heavy rain and flash floods in several provinces in the north and west of Iran after heavy rain on 12 April 2023. Heavy rain and flooding have also affected areas of neighbouring Iraq.

Heavy rain began on 12 April 2023. As of 13 April IRCS reported flooding in West Azarbaijan, Kermanshah, Ilam, Qazvin and Lorestan Province. At least three people have lost their lives as a result of the flooding. Fatalities were reported in Bukan, West Azerbaijan (1), Mehran, Ilam Provine (1) and Alamut in Qazvin Province (1).

IRCS said teams have assisted over 800 people across affected areas, including rescuing several people trapped in flooded homes. IRCS teams have also assisted in clearing floodwater from dozens of homes. Around 400 people have been displaced by the floods and are staying in emergency accommodation. Some of those evacuated are in Lorestan Province where levels of the Kamandan Dam were rising, IRCS said.
