3 from Texas survive California lightning strike

An Austin man and two companions survived a lightning strike that scorched the poles of their tent and left smoke wisping from their mouths.

Joshua White, 32, of Austin, his brother Colton Connelly, 23, and friend Ian Richmond, 26, both of San Antonio, were backpacking along the John Muir Trail in the Sierra Mountains of California on Aug. 14 when a storm blew in.

The three men were making camp at Guitar Lake, near Mount Whitney, which they planned to summit the next day, when it started to rain lightly, said White, who works at REI in the Gateway Shopping Center.

As they prepared lunch in the vestibule of one of the tents, the rain began to pick up. Soon, driving rain and hail were pelting the tent. The thunder grew louder until they knew the storm was right on top of them.

Mystery shrouds cranes' deaths

India - Something mysterious is killing common cranes at their newfound habitat near Pakki Tibbi village of the Lambi constituency. Hundreds of the birds have already died this season, while dozens are falling prey daily.

Pakki Tibbi village was never known for its wildlife attractions but the problem of water logging provided favourable conditions to the common cranes to make colonies on kikar trees along the Abohar-Fazilka railways line adjacent to the village.

"Young birds of the specie die every year when their attempts to fly fail, but deaths of mature cranes this season is new phenomenon. Now, the death rate has decreased, but around 40-50 cranes were dying daily till a few days back," said Amreek Singh, a villager.

Four common cranes died during an hour-long stay of the HT team at the colony of cranes on Sunday. Birds fell unconscious before dying.

A few days back, forest range officer Jeeta Singh had collected some of the dead birds. However, no postmortem was conducted to find out the reason behind their deaths.

New Drought Problem: US Homes Are Cracking

Companies that fix foundations struggle to meet demand

Carol DeVaughan assumed her suburban St. Louis home was simply settling when cracks appeared in the walls. When she noticed huge gaps between her fireplace and ceiling, and that her family room was starting to tilt, she knew she had bigger problems. Like thousands of other Americans getting stuck with huge repair bills, DeVaughan learned that the intense drought baking much of the country's lawns, fields and forests this summer has also been sucking the moisture from underground, causing shifting that can lead to cracked basements and foundations, as well as damage aboveground.
