Caught on camera: Lightning strikes Delta plane in Atlanta

Altanta plane lightning
© YouTubeA freeze frame shows the moment lightning struck a Delta Air Lines plane in Atlanta on Tues., Aug. 18, 2015.
The rain would not let up Tuesday, and Delta Air Lines flight No. 67 did not have clearance to depart Hartsfield-Jackson Atlanta International Airport.

Jack Perkins, who was "filming the line of planes all stacked up during a ground hold," turned on his camera.

About 17 seconds into the recording, a bolt of lightning struck the Boeing 737-900ER.

Perkins, who was not on the affected aircraft, uploaded the frightening moment on YouTube — a moment that had been viewed more than 36,000 times by Thursday afternoon.

Comment: Another example of the increased frequency of lightning worldwide.

Symbolic? Lightening strikes Google data center four times in succession

lightening computer data center
In an iconic moment of the data-driven society, a Google data-center in Belgium was struck not once, but four times by lightning during a storm.

The old adages apparently don't apply in this modern age, as a power outage temporarily took down the computing facility after the repeated strikes of lightning hit its power grid.

Comment: These occurrences may become more common as lightening strikes are increasing globally.

Wildlife officers warn walkers to keep pets close and stick together if confronted

Yukon Conservation officers are warning people about a wolf in the area of the Whitehorse landfill site after it attacked a dog and followed its owners on Friday.

The wolf attacked the dog as it walked alongside its owners, who were on bicycles. After biting the dog, the wolf approached within five metres of the cyclists before backing off. It then followed them at a distance.

Conservation officers say they've encountered a wolf, fitting the same description, in the area of the dump for the past couple of weeks, sometimes with at least one other wolf.

As the wolf doesn't appear to be afraid of people, officers are warning people walking in the greenbelt area to keep pets close and to stick together if confronted. They also recommend carrying bear spray as a precaution.

Pit bull terrier attacks two family members in Piqua, Ohio

Piqua police responded to a report of a dog attack on Wednesday.

The dispatch indicated that a dog was attacking an individual and would not stop attacking.

Police responded to 1006 Madison Street and arrived to find the dog, a pit bull, still attacking its owner. Officers used both Tasers and pepper spray on the animal in order to evacuate the family of three from the home.

The house was secured and the animal shelter called to remove the vicious pit bull from the home.

A pair of officers from the Miami County Animal Shelter, along with several police officers, entered the home and managed to get the animal out without further incident, as the residents watched from a safe vantage point.

Officers said that a child at the home had apparently reached for her cell phone when it began to ring and with the sudden movement, the pit bull attacked her. Her father immediately jumped to her rescue and the dog turned to attack him. Police say that they believe that an ankle-high leather work boot the man was wearing probably saved him from more severe injury but that the dog had inflicted severe bite wounds to the man's foot, ankle and leg.

Video: Russian bear run over by SUV, escapes, then chases tormentors

The incident happened on the Kuril Islands, in Russia's Far East.

The video is shot from a second car, where three people - two males and a female - were hiding. It is not clear how the SUV ran over the bear and if there are any people inside the vehicle.

The clip shows the animal's attempts to escape from under the SUV and people commenting on it. One of the men asks for a knife to finish off the bear, while the other jokingly offers to rape the bear with a stick.

However, the animal finally manages to break free, tears a tire off the SUV with his teeth and claws, and rushes towards the other car. That's when the vehicle starts speeding away with the passengers screaming in fear.

The footage has attracted the attention of the police, who have started a probe and will shortly make a decision on whether to launch a criminal animal cruelty case.

Three firefighters are killed battling devastating wildfires across Washington state; one million acres on fire

Authorities on Wednesday afternoon urged people in the north-central Washington town to evacuate because of a fast-moving wildfire
Three firefighters in Washington state were killed and four injured while battling a wildfire threatening the north-central town of Twisp, Governor Jay Inslee said on Wednesday, as more than a dozen major blazes burned across Western U.S. states.

The deaths came as a fast-moving wildfire forced authorities late on Wednesday to order the evacuations of Twisp and Winthrop, towns in the foothills of the Cascade mountains, Okanogan County Emergency Management said on Facebook.

'I was just told that three firefighters died while battling the Twisp fire and four were injured,' Inslee said in a statement.

Fires have blackened more than 1 million acres (400,000 hectares) across the arid Western region, prompting fire managers to call in help from the U.S. Army and abroad to reinforce civilian crews.

Study finds Southern California faces greater risk from an earthquake-caused tsunami than previously understood

Image
An earthquake along the California coast could pose a greater tsunami threat to the Ventura area than previously understood, according to a new study published Tuesday by UC Riverside and U.S. Geological Survey scientists.

Published in the journal Geophysical Research Letters, a publication of the American Geophysical Union, the study found that tsunami floodwaters could reach points in the Ventura vicinity beyond the area currently marked in California's official tsunami inundation map. Tsunami wave heights could approach as high as 20 feet in the Ventura Harbor and Channel Islands Beach area near Oxnard.

A California Geological Survey official said the agency will study the report. The agency is in the midst of creating a second edition of tsunami inundation maps after publishing the first version about six years ago.

The latest study comes amid new focus on the earthquake faults that stretch deep under the earth in the Santa Barbara and Ventura areas. Previously, some seismic experts thought that faults in this area posed only a moderate threat. But research in recent years suggests that they are connected in a way that could cause a magnitude-7.7 to 8.1 earthquake.
