Lava stream threatening homes and inching closer to road on Hawaii's Big Island

A 13-mile finger of lava from Kilauea Volcano has started to again move quickly, and could hit a secondary road sometime Friday, Oct. 24, 2014. Officials on Hawaii's Big Island won't start evacuating people until the lava flow is within three to five days of affecting Pahoa residents.
A growing lava stream threatening homes and inching closer to a rural road on Hawaii's Big Island oozed forward in fits and starts this week, frustrating some residents but giving officials a window of time to prepare. The narrow, leading edge of the lava flow is now just 250 yards from the one-lane country road, which has been closed. Crews are working on an alternate route for remote communities in the Puna district in case the lava crosses a major thoroughfare.

The lava sped up over the past few days, advancing nearly 460 yards from Thursday morning to Friday, but it slowed again Friday morning, officials said. The flow's fitful nature is taking a toll on some Big Island residents, who got a brief reprieve from the advancing molten stream only to have to raise their guard again.

"This stop-and-go - it's going to be very frustrating for our residents," said Darryl Oliveira, director of Hawaii County Civil Defense. "It raises the anxiety level. It raises the concern."

Record challenging heat surges from Central U.S. to East

Image
After many locations over the Plains feel like late summer this weekend, the record-challenging warmth will expand to the Northeast next week.

Millions of people will be reaching for shorts and short-sleeve shirts for a few days as the warmth builds.

High pressure over the South is forecast to continue to pump warm air in from Mexico and provide abundant sunshine to Texas and the Plains this weekend. Some major cities will challenge record highs as a result, including Dallas, Denver, Oklahoma City and Kansas City, Missouri.

According to AccuWeather.com Senior Meteorologist Paul Walker, "Temperatures across the Plains will feel more typical of Labor Day than late October."

New record-high temperatures were achieved on Friday over Texas, Colorado and Wyoming. Denver and surrounding areas broke their record high temperatures on Friday. Denver reached 82 F breaking its old record of 80 set in 2011.

Greybull, Wyoming, reached a high of 77 F breaking the old record of 72 degrees back in 1998. Riverton, Wyoming, reached a high of 74 degrees breaking its record of 68 degrees back in 1995. Delhart, Texas, reached 87 degrees on Friday breaking its old record of 85 degrees set in 2012.

Temperatures will run between 10-15 degrees F above average as far north as North Dakota through the weekend.

A 7-year-old boy has died after being severely bitten by a dog in Dodge County in eastern Wisconsin.

The Dodge County Sheriff's Office said in a statement late Friday that the incident was reported just before 5:30 p.m. Friday in the Town of Hustisford, about 40 miles northwest of Milwaukee.

A 911 caller said the boy was bleeding profusely, Lt. Brian Loos told WISN-TV.

"At some point our dispatchers began to talk the mother through CPR. Numerous first-responding agencies responded," Loos said. But the child died at the scene despite extensive lifesaving efforts.

"The various individuals and agencies that were involved in this did a phenomenal job. They were at the scene attempting to save this child's life for quite a long period of time," Loos said.

The department's statement said names, addresses and additional information about the nature of the incident and the dog wouldn't be released for now out of respect to the family. The dog was quarantined. Loos said the dog was known to the family but wouldn't say if it was the family pet or what breed it was.

Comment: The following data were extracted from the Wiki page, Fatal dog attacks in the United States and might prove instructive to have a brief look at. Prior to 2001 all deaths annually reported due to dog attacks numbered in single digits. In 2001 itself, 14 were recorded, in 2002 only 6 were noted, in 2003 - 14, 2004 - 16, 2005 - 28, 2006 - 32, 2007 - 34, 2008 - 23, 2009 - 31, 2010 - 37, 2011 - 33, 2012 -35, 2013 - 32 and finally this year, 25 so far. Clearly the overall trend is upward and coupled with the recent reports below, gleaned from across globe, indicate that something seems to be seriously disturbing man's best friend of late.

Tropical Storm Ana headed for western Canada next week

Image

Hurricane Ana formed in the tropical eastern pacific back on October 17th and skirted past the Hawaiian Islands a few days later. Ana has weakened to a tropical storm and continues to spin her way into colder waters north of Hawaii.

Forecast models continue to predict this storm to lift into higher latitudes and the polar jet stream will grab hold of her and kick this storm to the east. By early next week the track of this storm will hit the west coast of Canada by early Tuesday morning.

What does this mean for Montana? This storm system should continue to weaken as it moves eastward toward the coast down to a subtropical low and as it moves inland into British Columbia the storm will continue to weaken.

Strong winds create reverse waterfall in England

Reverse Waterfall

Well, isn't this odd?

In the Peak District of England there is a waterfall where the water doesn't actually fall.

Officially known as the Derbyshire waterfall, it's also called Kinder Downfall. The water here usually cascades down about 80 feet from this fall. But a natural phenomenon occurs when high winds hit the area and updrafts force the water to blow back upstream - resulting in a sort of reverse waterfall.

The winds seen in this video are believed to be remnants of the recent Hurricane Gonzalo. Whatever their origin, these wind gusts reached 50 mph creating a mist that can reportedly be seen several miles away.

An Australian man is recovering in a Thai hospital after being mauled by a young male tiger in a special tourist enclosure at an animal park on the resort island of Phuket.

Paul Goudie, from Werribee, near Melbourne, was attacked at the enclosure this week at the Tiger Kingdom tourist show after being given controlled access to a group of young tigers.

Goudie, 49, suffered serious bites to his left leg and stomach and is being treated at a Phuket hospital prior to surgery to avoid the risk of infection.

At the tiger park, tourists are invited into a special caged enclosure with handlers as part of the visitor experience.

Sinkhole opens up in Maspeth, New York

A sinkhole that opened up in the driveway between two houses on 58th Road in Maspeth forced at least a dozen residents from their homes and prompted Con Edison to cut power to part of the block on Friday.

The hole is in the walkway between 69-11 and 69-13 58 Road, located on the north side of a block between 69th Street and 69th Place, just south of the Long Island Expressway. Vacate orders were issued for both of those houses.

Danielle Maher and her husband have owned 69-11 for more than three years. SHe said said that her uncle had heard cracking sounds in the wall of the basement some time between 2:30 and 3 p.m.

"He called me outside to take a look and I same the hole," she said. "I ran into the house to grab the baby and the dogs. I didn't even make it out of the house when I heard it collapse, then I called my husband."
