The number of victims of Hurricane Matthew, which has wrought havoc in Haiti, neared 900 on Friday as reports from hard-to-access remote southwestern areas continued coming. A total of 350,000 Haitians require immediate assistance, the UN says. The death toll from the Category 4 hurricane, which has shaken the Caribbean nation, has been climbing with scores of people still missing.

As of Friday, 870 people were reported killed in the calamity, Reuters reported, citing local officials.


Comment: This is the worst disaster to hit Haiti since the devastating earthquake in 2010. Mount Aso in Kumamoto Prefecture erupted early Saturday, belching a column of ash 11,000 meters into the air in the latest eruption in one of the world's most volcanically active countries.

The explosive eruption occurred around 1:46 a.m. on one of the peaks of the 1,592-meter mountain, the Meteorological Agency said. There were no immediate reports of injuries.

It was the first explosive eruption at that particular peak since January 1980.

The agency raised the alert level for the volcano to level 3 on a scale of 5 and urged people not to approach the mountain.

Footage on NHK public television showed orange flames billowing from several locations on the mountaintop as the volcano emitted thick gray smoke into the sky.

There are no houses within the off-limit area and no injuries or major damage have been reported in nearby towns, though buildings and cars were covered with thick ash. No flights were affected.

A window at a youth center just a few kilometers away from the mountain suffered a crack apparently from volcanic rocks.

Masaaki Yamamoto, a manager at the center, told NHK that he heard small volcanic rocks hitting the exterior of the building, and found a crack in the window along with nearby chunks of volcanic debris about the size of golf balls.

Hurricane Matthew finished with Florida Friday night and began its onslaught of Georgia. The part of the storm with the fastest winds remains just off the state's eastern shore as the storm moves north.

The National Hurricane Center reports that Matthew is a Category 3 storm with maximum sustained winds of 105 mph, making it somewhat less powerful than the 140-mph Category 4 monster it was Thursday. But it remains the most powerful storm to strike central or northern Florida in living memory, and it continues to pose the threat of severe flooding to northern Florida, coastal Georgia, South Carolina, and parts of North Carolina through the weekend.

A honey badger attacked two people near the Cradle of Humankind on Sunday, 2 October leaving them with multiple puncture wounds and a rabies scare.

Gail and Dave Coleman were enjoying a calm Sunday afternoon when they suddenly heard their dogs, three Dobermans, barking aggressively in their yard in Zwartkrans.

Upon investigation, the couple found their dogs fighting an aggressive honey badger. They ran inside the house and called the dogs. It is believed they wanted to protect their dogs from the badger and called them to get them inside. Once the dogs were inside, the security gate was closed, but despite all their efforts to prevent the badger from entering the house, the smart animal wiggled itself through the gate. Badgers are known for their intelligence and perseverance which explains the behaviour of the attacking animal.

A seven-meter deep sinkhole was found a few meters from a public elementary school in Barangay Bugas, Badian town earlier this week.

Due to the presence of the sinkhole in Sitio Purok 2, Barangay Bugas, officials of Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) of the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) 7 urged residents to stay away from the area while the ground there is unstable.

Eulalio Raboy, Barangay Bugas chief, told reporters that the sinkhole was first sighted by residents last Tuesday.

The sinkhole, with a depth of seven meters and a width of three meters, was found a few meters from Barangay Bugas Elementary School.

Luckily, the sinkhole has not affected any school structure or any house nearby, Raboy added.

Woman attacked by fisher cat in Coventry, Rhode Island

A Coventry woman says she feared for her life when she was attacked by what she says was a fisher cat.

It happened in her backyard, and now she's warning others in the area to be on the look out in fear the animal may strike again.

"All of a sudden I felt immense pain of my right foot and I just screamed really loud because I was trying to scare it away," said Honey Marie Meaker, who is still shaken up form the traumatic experience after being attacked by what she calls a vicious animal.

The injury she sustained is so bad she's now on crutches.

"I had no idea what it was, I didn't hear any noise, didn't hear any sounds. I just felt the pain, this excruciating pain," said Honey Marie.

It happened when she and her 13-year-old daughter took out the trash.

Honey had no clue what attacked her, but her daughter got a better look at it saying it was a fisher cat.

Two farmers were killed after they were struck by lightning in separate incidents in the city, police said today.

Rambhavan (40) died after being struck by lightning in Paderi village while Sukhdev (35) died in a similar incident in Narayadh village yesterday, they said.

Sub Divisional Magistrate (SDM) JN Sachan said compensation would be provided to the families of the victims.

Joy over the long-awaited rain quickly turned to terror for the residents of Komatipoort, KaMaqhekeza, Mangweni, Schoemansdal and surrounds on Friday at about 19:00.

Hail stones the size of golf balls came pelting down, shattering vehicle windscreens, while the severe winds ripped off roofs.

According to Mr Cyril Ripinga, spokesman for the Nkomazi Local Municipality, about 426 houses, 25 schools, five clinics and Tonga and Shongwe hospitals were damaged, but the verification process is ongoing.

More than 100 houses' roofs were blown away, more than eight collapsed and infrastructure such as gravel roads and electricity cables were damaged.

Large parts of Nkomazi were left without electricity, but municipal employees worked around the clock over the weekend to fix the cables.

Many residents had to run for their lives as their houses collapsed, leaving their possessions to the mercy of the elements.

Ms Thobile Mashaba had to run to her neighbours for safety when the corrugated iron of her shack was ripped off by the wind.

The US Geological Survey has produced new, high definition images of the Hawaii volcano Kilauea summit eruption and the active lava lake formed in the crater at the top of the volcano.
