A couple living on the edge of a collapsed hillside are dreading the next deluge.

Mercer residents Hayley and Robert Schwass watched as the paddock over the fence cracked open and slid down into the valley below.

It smothered a stream and a natural dam formed but they now fear it will fill up and burst. "We've got a lake down there now," Robert said.

"And the ground is so soft it's only a matter of time before it bursts."

Worst harvest in 40 years as drought affects 1.2 million in Sri Lanka

Drought in Sri Lanka

Sri Lanka is enduring its worst drought in decades and worst harvest in 40 years, affecting more than 1.2 million people. Of them, over 600 000 are children.

Sri Lanka's government said over 1.2 million people have been affected by drought which began last November and continues despite some occasional rainfall.

Drought conditions now exist in all but two of the country's 25 provinces. Rice paddy cultivation from the harvest just ended was down 63% compared to the average, making it the worst major harvest in over 40 years, Save the Children charity reports.

"The biggest harvest of the year has just finished and it's been a massive failure for most farmers living in areas crippled by the drought," said Chris McIvor, Save the Children Country Director in Sri Lanka. "Widespread food and water shortages across the country have been visible, and it could get worse if the next harvest in Yala season due in August is also below the norm. Thousands of water tanks are running low or drying out with some water stores becoming contaminated because they've been stagnant for too long."

The drought is also compounding Sri Lanka's long struggle with malnutrition, which affects nearly a third of children and a quarter of women, McIvor warned. "The nation's food supply has taken a huge hit, which in turn has caused prices to rise. As a result, many of the poorest families are struggling to feed their children, often choosing to eat fewer and smaller meals, and cut down on nutritious foods like meat and vegetables," he said.

The drought is also hampering Sri Lanka's electricity generation, which is largely provided through hydropower. The government recently said that the country's current hydropower production stands at just a third of what is required.

Snow piled up rapidly in parts of the north-eastern United States on Tuesday as a blizzard began blowing in, with residents being advised to stay at home, airlines grounding flights and schools canceling classes. However, earlier predictions of up to two feet of snow in major cities like New York and Washington DC were revised down as precipitation turned to sleet early.

Alicante floods
Central part of Playa de la Albufereta disappears after worst floods in 20 years hit Alicante, Spain on March 13, 2017.
The province of Alicante, southeastern Spain saw a record amount of rain on Monday, March 13, 2017, and its worst floods in 20 years.

Streets of the city of Alicante quickly turned into rivers with dozens of cars submerged and abandoned in what local media is describing as historic rainfall.

In 24 hours, the city recorded 137 mm (5.39 inches) of rain, almost half it records in a whole year (311.1 mm / 12.24 inches), according to data provided by the State Meteorological Agency Aemet. The normal amount of precipitation in March is just 23 mm (0.9 inches).

At least one man had to be rescued from its vehicle after being swept away into the Serpis River. Schools across the province are closed at least until Wednesday. The famous Albufereta Beach has disappeared in its central part as huge amounts of water kept rushing in (first video in the playlist below).

Traffic has been completely stopped with heavy snow lasting for multiple days in China's northwest Shaanxi province.

The sleety weather has embraced most parts of northwest China's Shaanxi Province since Saturday night, bringing the temperature down by around 10 degrees Celsius. Though the long-anticipated snow clad the region in silvery white, it caused numerous traffic difficulties for residents and with 50 centimeters of snow, some highways have been completely blocked.

On a key provincial highway located on the northern side of the Qinling Mountains, a tree collapsed because of the heavy snow and fell on a passing truck.

"I heard a 'bang' while driving. I did not know what it was and it just scared me. The truck swayed. I stopped the truck and got off to see what exactly happened. It was the fallen tree," said a truck driver.

Soldier killed by lightning bolt in Cambodia

LIGHTNING
Lightning struck and killed a 57-year-old soldier harvesting cassava in a heavy storm in Preah Vihear province, police said yesterday.

Seng Thy, a soldier in the Royal Cambodian Armed Forces' Intervention Division 3, was working on a farm for extra cash during his free time when the sky began to darken, said Hak Yuth, deputy police chief of Choam Ksan district.

When the storm finally hit and heavy rain started to fall, Seng Thy ran under a tree that was struck by lightning, electrocuting him at about 6 p.m. on Sunday, he said. "If the victim had stayed out of the rain in the cottage with the other workers, he might not have died," Mr. Yuth said.

Time-lapse video shows 19 inches of snow settle over night in Apalachin, New York

video
This time-lapse video illustrates perfectly just how much snow can fall in a few hours.

Ron Murphy uploaded the time-lapse video of snow falling in Apalachin, N.Y., just as parts of the east coast were hit with heavy amounts of snow. The time-lapse was compiled from images taken once every minute.

"A persistent band of snow stayed over the house from about 2:30 am to this typing," Murphy wrote on YouTube. "At the end of the video the snow is about 19 inches. So there is a wall of snow between the camera and other stuff."

Flashback Strange trumpet noises heard in North Dakota, New Jersey, North Carolina and Bournemouth, UK

North Dakota strange sounds
© YouTube/Mika Gee
This video was filmed around 12:02 pm in Dickinson, North Dakota.

Around 20-30 minutes before this video, I was at home and I heard a screeching sound. I dismissed it, thinking it was a vehicle or something. I kept hearing it so I looked outside to see if there were any nearby construction or anything out of the ordinary but didn't find anything. The railroad is 2 miles away and we normally don't hear anything from it. There is an oil rig approximately 0.5-1 mile away but we normally don't hear that either. There is a farm about 1 mile away that I was assuming that the noise was coming from. The farm is a small local farm and has no large machinery that could make this sound.

The sound was like a screeching of high and low volumes and pitches, as heard in the video. It would sound for a few seconds at a time, stay silent for some minutes, and then start again. I've never heard anything like it before in the area. Other sounds in the video include ice dripping, a tarp flying in the wind, and dogs barking in the distance.

I'm hoping to find anyone else who has heard similar sounds, whether in the area or not. Also to see if anyone has an explanation for I am curious. I have not heard the sound since. Thanks for your time. Have a good day.

A western New York home on the shore of Lake Ontario is completely encased in ice after to five days of strong winds.

Twitter user @john_kucko shared photos and video on the social media site showing the house completely encased in ice Sunday after being bombarded with five days of strong winds off Lake Ontario in freezing temperatures.

The Twitter user explained the house has no retaining wall, while the neighboring homes that lack thick ice coverings are protected by such structures.

"'Ice House' is real, folks. 5 days of wind whipped Lake Ontario in WNY will do that," he tweeted.
