Woman attacked by shark off San Onofre Beach, California

Shark attacks
A shark attacked a woman wading in the ocean with friends, tearing away part of her upper thigh off a popular Southern California beach, authorities and witnesses said Sunday.

Leeanne Ericson was camping at San Onofre Saturday evening.

She loves the ocean and decided to join her boyfriend in the water when she was bitten by a shark.

"She was swimming, he was surfing and I guess he heard her scream when he was on the board," said family friend Laura Smith. "He jumped and dove off the board and went looking for her and found her on the bottom and brought her up on the surf board and paddled in with her and tied the leash around her leg to try to control the bleeding until they airlifted her down to the hospital, but if it wasn't for him she wouldn't have made it. He truly save her life."

Comment: 2 people suffered light injuries due to shark attacks on the same day off South Africa and South Carolina .

Birdwatchers have chartered four planes to fly to Orkney to spot a blackbird which has never been seen before in the UK.

The red-winged blackbird is an American species which was spotted by a local bird observatory on the island of North Ronaldsay on Saturday.

Now scores of twitchers have taken advantage of the Bank Holiday weekend and chartered planes to go and see the rare bird, which was spotted by Simon Davies, principal assistant warden of the North Ronaldsay Bird Observatory.

Mr Davies was doing a bird census when the blackbird "popped up its head behind some gas cannisters", said Larissa Simulik, an assistant warden at the observatory.

Killer whales go on unprecedented killing spree off coast of Monterrey, California

Photographers snapped some amazing pictures of killer whales and humpbacks while watching off the coast of Monterey, Calif. in April 2017.
A week of insane whale sightings in Monterey Bay got even crazier Wednesday when a pod of nine killer whales attacked a gray whale calf right in front of a whale watching tour boat.

This is the fourth kill in seven days for the group of orcas. That's one kill every other day since last Thursday by the same nine killer whales (with a few others joining occasionally). Nancy Black, a marine biologist with Monterey Bay Whale Watch who has been studying these whales for decades, called the frequency of the pod's killings "remarkable" and "unprecedented."

"This has never happened in my thirty years," Black told SFGATE. "Just to witness that out in nature when you usually see that kind of thing on television is really spectacular."

At least one of the People's Climate March rallies scheduled for Saturday in Colorado was cancelled as a result of a major snowstorm, providing climate skeptics with a good chuckle.

The Colorado Springs march, one of 12 slated to take place in Colorado, was canceled late Friday after heavy snow began falling across the Front Range, with more than a foot accumulating in some areas, as reported by Western Wire.

"Sometimes Mother Nature throws you a curveball!" said the Colorado Springs Council for Justice in a Friday post 350 Colorado Springs. "We know we aren't in the business of risking anyone's safety. Dangerous conditions and wet heavy snow in the forecast for tomorrow."

More than 100 marchers braved the cold at a rally Saturday at Civic Center Park in Denver, where the snow was so heavy that someone was able to build a snowman, as shown in photos posted online.

The website Complete Colorado ran a photo of a man on skis with the headline, "Heading to the Global Warming Rally Today."

Rare blue auroras photographed over Alaska

Northern Lights are usually green, and sometimes red. Those are the colors produced by oxygen when it is excited by electrons raining down from space. On April 22nd, Didier Lindsey of Fox, Alaska, witnessed an apparition of aurora-blue:

Hours before he took the picture, a CME struck Earth's magnetic field, igniting a G2-class geomagnetic storm. "The sky filled with very active auroras," Lindsey says,"including these rare blues."

Climate Depot report: Extreme weather at record lows in US

On Eve of DC climate march, drought drops to record lows in U.S. as nearly all extreme weather is either declining or at or near record lows (See: Climate Bullies Take to the Streets for 'People's Climate March' in DC on April 29th')

The federal government has just released yet another key piece of scientific data that counters the man-made global warming narrative. The federal U.S. Drought Monitor report shows that droughts in the U.S. are at record lows in 2017. See: Feds: U.S. drought reaches record low in 2017 as rain reigns - Sees lowest levels of drought ever monitored

"Drought in the U.S. fell to a record low this week, with just 6.1% of the lower 48 states currently experiencing such dry conditions, federal officials announced Thursday. That's the lowest percentage in the 17-year history of the weekly U.S. Drought Monitor report," USA Today reported on April 27.
