The University of the West Indies Seismic Research Center (UWI SRC) on Tuesday reported there have been high levels of seismic activity at the Kick 'em Jenny underwater volcano in the past few days.

Grenada's National Disaster Management Agency (NaDMA) said in a statement that since the episode began on the afternoon of September 30, several events have taken place. The largest of those occurred on Monday at 3:24 a.m., 3:35 a.m. and 3:56 a.m. of magnitudes 3.5, 3.5 and 3.3 respectively.

The UWI SRC said it is currently analysing the data and will update further after complete processing,

NaDMA has informed marine interests and the general public that the threat level at the volcano, located about five miles north of Grenada, remains at yellow, so the exclusion zone of 1.5 kilometres must continue to be observed.

The yellow alert means "the volcano is restless: seismicity and/or fumarolic activity are above the historical level, or other unusual activity has been observed, or can be expected without warning".

Comment: Scientists say Grenada's Kick'em Jenny underwater volcano poses dangerous tsunami risk to US coast

Sudden snowfall has stranded thousands of visitors and over 1,000 vehicles at Zheduo Mountain in Kangding City of southwest China's Sichuan Province, a scenic spot attracting many to visit during the National Day holiday.

The heavy snow started from September 30, and as it continued, the local weather department issued a warning against blizzards around 9:00 PM on October 2.

It resulted in a snow depth of 40 centimeters at some areas on the mountain. The snow storm has also caused rocks to collapse alongside the road, disrupting local traffic.

More than 400 local firefighters of Ganzi Tibetan Autonomous Prefecture have participated in the rescue work and helped clean up snow on mountain roads. After working overnight, most of the stranded vehicles were able to run down the slippery mountain roads to safer areas.

Relevant local departments have sent clean water, food, clothes, medicine, and other rescue materials to reach those still trapped on Zheduo Mountain.

Floods in Dubrovnik
Flood in Dubrovnik
A storm brought record rainfall and flooding to the historic city of Dubrovnik in Croatia on 02 October, 2018.

According to Croatian public broadcaster HRT, 259.2 mm of rain fell between 05:00 and 08:00 local time, 02 October. This is the highest ever amount recorded in a single day in the country.

Flooding appeared to be minor, although did cause some damage to buildings and a number of roads had to be closed. State Administration for Protection and Rescue (DUZS) said that by around 22:00, teams had carried out 68 interventions for pumping flood water and clearing debris around the city. DUZS said the worst problems for traffic were around entrances to the Old Town and in the Gruž neighbourhood further north. Much of the flood water has since receded.

Record snowfall wallops Calgary, Alberta in 1st storm of season - UPDATE

Calgary was hit by an early fall snowstorm
© Sarah LawrynuikCalgary was hit by an early fall snowstorm Monday night.
City of Calgary crews worked all night and into the morning to clear roads of heavy snowfall, but it will still be several more hours until significant progress will be made on Priority 1 routes, according to the city's director of roads.

"All crews and hired equipment available have been working overnight and will continue until all routes and pedestrian facilities are complete," reads an update provided to city council.

The city said the amount, accumulation rate and heavy moisture content of the snow means crews likely won't be done with the major roads until late afternoon or early evening.

Update: CBC further reports:
Calgary is cleaning up after Tuesday's unseasonably harsh taste of winter.

The good news is, the weather system that wreaked havoc on western Alberta has pushed farther east and snowfall warnings that were in effect for three southeast Alberta regions Wednesday morning ended shortly before 9 a.m. MT.

But all that snow meant two separate weather records were broken in the city. Environment Canada said the 32.8 centimetres of snow that fell in Calgary on Tuesday shattered the Oct. 2 snowfall record of 4.6 centimetres set in 1954. And the snow also broke the record for one day in October, which was 30 centimetres set in 1914.

Calgary, comparatively, got off light as Environment Canada said both Kananaskis and the hamlet of Bragg Creek west of Calgary saw 60 centimetres fall as of 7 p.m., while the hamlet of Exshaw had 48 centimetres of snow as of 9 p.m.

Bear, cubs kill worker at remote silver mine in Alaska

Bear attack
A female bear and her two cubs mauled and killed a young man working at a remote mine site on a southeast Alaska island with one of the highest bear densities in the state, authorities said Monday.

Anthony David Montoya, 18, a contract worker from Hollis, Oklahoma, died at a remote drill site accessible only by helicopter, according to Hecla Greens Creek Mine and authorities. Mine officials said workers receive training on how to deal with bears because of the large number in the area.

Alaska State Troopers said Montoya was mauled by the three bears, all of which were killed before they arrived. It was not immediately clear who killed them.

Montoya worked for Idaho-based Timberline Drilling, which provides core drilling services at Greens Creek, the mine said in a release. His body was being taken to the state medical examiner's office for an autopsy.
