Group finds & films experimental Canadian fighter jet model at bottom of Lake Ontario

A group of aviation enthusiasts have found a free-flight test model of an iconic Canadian fighter jet, the Avro Arrow, at the bottom of Lake Ontario. They aim to raise several such models, which for decades have been surrounded by controversy and nostalgia.

Members of the OEX Recovery Group Incorporated (OEX), which has been leading the Raise the Arrow project, revealed their discovery, along with underwater images and video from their expedition on the lake, on Friday - and hinted that the water contains even more historical surprises.

"There are more jets out there than originally thought," said expedition leader John Burzynski in a statement.

Therefore, some 700 years of the 1st millennium (230 to 930s) have neither strata nor tree samples for C14 or dendro-chronological dating.

An incredible mummy-filled tomb belonging to a royal goldsmith who lived more than 3,500 years ago has been uncovered in Egypt's famed Valley of the Kings.

The tomb is located on the west bank of the river Nile in a cemetery for noblemen and prominent officials in the southern city of Luxor.

The Ministry of Antiquities has identified the goldsmith as a man named Amenemhat who belonged to the 18th dynasty of Egypt, around 1400 years BC. His wife Amenhotep was also laid to rest in the tomb along with their son.

Newly declassified CIA files seem to confirm certain FBI documents related to Adolf Hitler, which claimed the Nazi Fuehrer escaped Germany and took up residence in South America after World War II.

The files indicate that in 1955, the chief of the CIA's Western Hemisphere Division (WHD) received a secret memo with the subject line "Operational: Adolf Hitler," from the acting CIA station chief in Venezuela, which indicated that one of his sources had received a tip that the Nazi Fuhrer was indeed alive and living in Argentina.

Ancient texts hidden beneath years of writing in manuscripts at St. Catherine's Monastery discovered

At the foot of Mount Sinai, the mountain atop which God is said to have given Moses the Ten Commandments, lies St. Catherine's Monastery, one of the world's oldest continuously running libraries. St. Catherine's is home to some of the world's oldest and most valuable books and manuscripts, and the monks that watch over them.

These texts are largely manuscripts and are filled with mostly Greek and Latin. However, recently scientists have uncovered new languages in the manuscripts - and some that haven't been used since the Dark Ages.

The only catch - the languages can't be seen with the naked eye.

When the texts were originally written, the monks only wrote in ancient languages. However, the parchment they were written on at the time was valuable, and often subject to reuse.

Texts deemed less important were scrubbed clean from the parchment, which was then reused for more important information, often written in other more universal or modern languages. These texts with multiple layers of writing are known as palimpsests.

The simple answer as to which government was to blame for the beginning of World War One is Germany. As anyone who has studied the war will tell you, when it comes to the origins of this war, there is no simple answer.

I recently came across an idea, presented by Peter Frankopan in The Silk Roads: A New History of the World, who suggested that some significant portion of the blame falls on Britain - desiring war in Europe to distract Russia from Britain's possessions in the Near East, Central Asia and the subcontinent. I cover this most directly here and here. Now I am reading a book that compliments well Frankopan's work.

When the civil war erupted in 2011, Syria was still far from being a major tourist destination and only a few of its cities resonated with the outside world. Those include Damascus, Aleppo, Hama, and to a lesser extent Homs which are known for either their souks, citadels, gigantic water wheels, quaint neighborhoods, or a combination of any of these features. Raqqa, on the other hand, was not among Syria's illustrious cities. It wasn't until January 2014, when the terror group ISIS took control of Raqqa, that it became recognized, but only to be associated with terrible oppression and suffering. However, the city has a history that dates back to antiquity and it has had its golden years as well as dark periods since those days.

Raqqa, Syria's sixth largest city, is located in an oil-rich province which bares the same name on the northern banks of the Euphrates River, about 160 kilometers east of Aleppo. Before the war broke out, Syria had been experiencing a tourism revival and there was a drive to restore ancient ruins in places off the beaten track like the Euphrates river valley and the country's far eastern regions. The area surrounding Raqqa was particularly rich in historical sites and was the site of a number of excavation.

The Central Intelligence Agency has released some 2,000 pages of formerly classified materials on the Soviet Navy during the Cold War. Military observer Andrei Kotz takes a look at some of the most fascinating conclusions Western intelligence analysts reached about the Soviet Navy's presumed strengths and weaknesses.

The trove of documents, encompassing 82 reports spanning three decades, from the 1960s to the 1980s, includes everything from translations of materials from 'Military Thought', a Soviet military journal, to high-level US national intelligence estimates of Soviet naval power, to agency reports focused on subs, carriers, cruise missiles, and more.

The documents confirm that the US military leadership saw the Soviet Navy as a serious threat to US naval hegemony, and that they allocated generous funding to intelligence studies on the subject. The materials touched on practically all aspects of Soviet naval military thought, from the characteristics of its ship-based anti-aircraft missile systems, to the tactical configuration of submarine strike groups.

A mysterious coded letter penned in the 17th century by a nun who claimed to be possessed by the Devil himself has finally been deciphered using an algorithm found, oddly enough, on the Dark Web.

Sister Maria Crocifissa della Concezione was writing letters at the convent of Palma di Montechiaro on August 11 1676, when she claimed that Lucifer was attempting to lure her into serving evil reports La Stampa.

She then wrote a note that included a variety of symbols and languages including Greek, Cyrillic, Arabic and Runic. In the intervening centuries, scholars, cryptographers, mystics and occultists have tried and failed to decipher the text.

Recently, a team from The Ludum Science Center in Sicily happened to stumble upon an algorithm on the Dark Web which allowed them to decipher the seemingly unintelligible code.

A devastating tsunami caused by an asteroid impact in the Atlantic may have swept across the west coast of Britain in the 11th century, scientists believe.

The disaster is said to have submerged large numbers of villages and was mentioned in 1014 AD in the Anglo Saxon Chronicles, but there are doubts over whether the event really occurred.

Researchers say they have now found likely tsunami deposits at Marazion Marsh, Cornwall, and Chesil Beach, Dorset, from roughly the same time period that suggest the story is more than a legend.

Geographer Dr Phill Teasdale, from the University of Brighton, said: "If we can investigate this a bit more, we can talk about the geographical spread of the impact.

"Analysing the depth of the tsunami deposit can tell us whether that postulated asteroid impact in the Atlantic ocean was a reality."
