Tibetan Mother Sets Herself Ablaze, Dies; Hundreds Of Tibetans Detained In Lhasa

Chinese security officials have detained hundreds of Tibetans in Lhasa following multiple self-immolation protests against the Chinese control over Tibet, a US-based broadcaster reported Thursday.

About 600 Tibetans had been detained since the Sunday's protests in Lhasa in which two Tibetan men set themselves on fire, Radio Free Asia (RFA) reported citing sources who wished to remain anonymous.

The detention came amid news that a Tibetan mother of three set herself on fire outside a monastery in Aba country in the Sichuan province.

Two young men had earlier set themselves ablaze in front of Lhasa's famed Jokhang Temple, Chinese news agency Xinhua reported.

Over 35 Tibetans had set themselves on fire since March 2011 in the deadly protest against the six-decades of Chinese rule over Tibet, killing at least 27, Reuters reported citing Tibetan rights groups.

Engineering student, 21, 'stabbed and dismembered his roommate with knife then ate his brain and heart'

A 21-year-old electrical engineering student has been charged with first-degree murder after parts of a man's dismembered body were found in his home a week after the man first went missing.

Alexander Kinyua confessed to police that he also ate his roommate's heart and portions of the brain after killing him in their Joppa, Maryland town home.

This is the second deeply disturbing report of cannibalism to sweep the nation within a week. In the first, 'Miami Cannibal' Rudy Eugene tore off and ate most of the face of down-and-out homeless man Ronald Poppo.

The Hartford County Sheriff's office said they found the body parts while searching the town home on Terrapin Terrace in Joppa, Maryland, northeast of Baltimore, after receiving a tip from Kinyua's father.

Police also found a human head and hands in metal tins on the house's main floor, the Baltimore Sun reported.

According to charging documents, Kinyua admitted to eating Kujoe Bonsafo Agyei-Kodie's heart and part of his brain after stabbing him to death.

Kinyua then directed police to Towne Baptist Church on Trimble Road, where they said they found the rest of Agyei-Kodie's remains.

The scene was so gruesome investigators could barely speak: A 3 1/2-week-old boy lay dismembered in the bedroom of a single-story house, three of his tiny toes chewed off, his face torn away, his head severed and his brains ripped out.

"At this particular scene you could have heard a pin drop," San Antonio Police Chief William McManus said Monday. "No one was speaking. It was about as somber as it could have been."

Officers called to the home early Sunday found the boy's mother, Otty Sanchez, sitting on the couch with a self-inflicted wound to her chest and her throat partially slashed, screaming "I killed my baby! I killed my baby!" police said. She told officers the devil made her do it, police said.

Police violently arrest 14 protesters at Minnesota foreclosed home

Image
Members of Occupy Minnesota are accusing police of abusing their power by using physical violence to arrest demonstrators peacefully protesting at a foreclosed home in Minneapolis.

"In the latest incident in an ongoing showdown, officers violently arrested occupiers peacefully defending the Cruz family home from foreclosure Wednesday night," according to a statement from Occupy Homes Minnesota.

Protesters said police officers, including Minneapolis Chief Tim Dolan, were carrying large batons and using physical violence to arrest 14 protesters.

"The banks are stealing our homes through illegal and fraudulent practices while refusing to work with families, and they are aided and abetted by the mayor and police," Nick Espinosa, who was arrested on Wednesday, explained. "If anyone should be arrested it's the bankers that crashed our economy while paying themselves record bonuses with our tax dollars."

UK doctors set first strike date in 40 years

Image
The British Medical Association has decided to delay non-urgent patient care on June 21 after doctors voted with an overwhelming majority for the first industrial action in the profession in 40 years.

The BMA said in an open letter published in UK newspapers that the "reluctant" day of action is not meant to harm anyone and those with the most severe situations will still have access to medical care.

"On that day, doctors will be in their usual workplaces but providing urgent and emergency care only", wrote the BMA.

"We will be postponing non-urgent cases and although this will be disruptive to the NHS, rest assured, doctors will be there when our patients need us most and our action will not impact on your safety," it added.

The letter said the doctors are keen to have their "voice heard by the government."

The action comes after BMA warned ministers against pushing ahead with "totally unjustified" pension contribution rises and a simultaneous increase in doctors' retirement age.

New figures show French jobless rate has increased, marking the twelfth month in a row that unemployment has gone up in the country.

France had more people seeking jobs in April than any time in this century, the Labor Ministry said on Wednesday, adding that it expects more layoffs in the coming months, Reuters reported.

Registered jobless figures in France climbed from 4,500 to 2.89 million, the highest since September 1999, the ministry stated.

It was the first time that the Labor Ministry commented on the issue since new Socialist President Francois Hollande named an interim government in mid-May.

The ministry added that apparently during an election period corporate layoff plans had been held back by authorities.

Global madness: Man assaults another man in the street, eats his ear

A man appeared in court last Tuesday for beating up and eating the ear of a 42 year old father, last Friday in the streets of Montauban (South-Western France), says newspaper La Dépêche on Wednesday.

The incident happened last Friday around 9:30 pm, on the Consuls Bridge. A 31 year old, obviously drunk homeless man, provoked a fight with another man, who, unfortunately for him, was in the wrong place at the wrong time. During the fight, the attacker punched and kicked the victim, then ate two thirds of his right ear.

When they arrived on the spot, policemen and investigators couldn't locate the victim's ear bits. The victim was taken to Montauban's casualty department by the firemen.

The attacker, who was immediately arraigned last Tuesday, benefitted from an adjournment, but was kept in custody. The verdict will take place on the third of July.

Hundreds of people have been detained in Lhasa after two men set themselves on fire in the Tibetan regional capital, a US-based broadcaster said, as a young mother became the latest Tibetan to self-immolate.

Radio Free Asia said Chinese security forces had rounded up hundreds of residents and pilgrims in the wake of Sunday's incident, the first major protest in the heavily-guarded city since deadly anti-government riots in 2008.

It quoted a local source as saying about 600 Tibetans had been detained and those from outside the Tibet Autonomous Region (TAR) had been expelled.

Foreign journalists cannot go to the TAR without special permission and the report could not be independently confirmed. A security official in Lhasa said by telephone that she did not know anything about the reported detentions.

On Wednesday, a Tibetan mother of three self-immolated in front of a monastery in southwestern Sichuan province's Aba county, where many of the protests have taken place, Free Tibet and Radio Free Asia reported.

Free Tibet, a London-based campaign group, said the woman was in her mid-30s and died at the scene.

Rocker taps into anger at financial world, dedicating anti-bank song to 'those who are struggling in Europe and Berlin'

Bruce Springsteen has touched on a nerve of widespread discontent with financiers and bankers while performing a concert in Berlin.

Springsteen played to a sold-out crowd at Berlin's Olympiastadion, singing from his album Wrecking Ball and speaking about tough economic times that have put people out of work worldwide and led to debt crises in Greece and other countries.

"In America a lot of people have lost their jobs," said Springsteen, 62, who performed for three hours to 58,000 fans in the stadium that hosted the 1936 Olympics and 2006 World Cup final.

"But also in Europe and in Berlin, times are tough," he said, speaking in German. "This song is for all those who are struggling." He then introduced Jack of All Trades, a withering attack on bankers that includes the lyrics: "The banker man grows fat, working man grows thin."
