The Ecuadorian government has sent a letter to Sweden criticizing Stockholm for a lack of initiative in dealing with the case of WikiLeaks founder Julian Assange and has urged proceedings to be speeded up.

The letter by Ecuador's Foreign Ministry voices concern over a "serious lack of progress" by Swedish prosecutors investigating the sexual misconduct case against Assange, the Australian Associated Press (AAP) reported.

The whistleblower, who denies the accusations, was granted political asylum by Ecuador and remains holed up in the country's embassy in London where he been since 2012.

"We now are facing a serious outbreak of cholera," Director of Operations for the International Committee of the Red Cross Dominik Stillhart told a news conference in Yemen's capital, Sanaa, on Sunday.

7 Reasons why the liberal left is losing in America

bernie sanders looking pensive
Advice and constructive criticism from observers who believe that America would benefit from a healthier opposition to the governing coalition

President Trump wields great power. Those who believe him to be a cruel, dishonest man who is glaringly unqualified to preside over the executive branch or U.S. foreign policy, should welcome challenges from the left, right, and center to his administration.

But is the American left capable of political success right now?

Comment: The liberal left in America certainly hasn't been doing itself any favors for quite some time by alienating and ostracizing people, and focusing on issues that really aren't of significant importance.

It would probably help for those who tend towards the left to first recognize the reality that Obama was a puppet of the deep state who paid lip service to liberal ideals while drone bombing children, and that backing the psychopath Hillary Clinton was a recipe for disaster, both in the possibility of her election (as the continuation of the neoliberal destruction of the planet), and in her loss, and instead look to how one can cooperate with others in order to effect meaningful change that improves everyone's lives.

Sure, that means you won't get everything you want and the world won't be ideal, but the world is never going to be ideal and enacting some kind of positive change, perhaps even just locally, will improve things for others in small steps that add up over time.

And in reality, debating over who is or isn't "checking their privilege", or gendered bathrooms, or whatever, is a large energy expenditure that hasn't resulted in a whole lot of positive change overall.

Birthday cake storage gets family kicked off of Jet Blue flight

JetBlue Airways caused birthday tears for a family that say they were kicked off a Las Vegas bound flight because of a staff dispute over the storage of their celebratory cake.

Minta and Cameron Burke from New Jersey were traveling from JFK Airport in New York to Las Vegas, Nevada with their young children to celebrate Minta's 40th birthday.

"We were just so happy. Couldn't wait to get to Las Vegas, and all of a sudden this occurred, and my two children are screaming, crying. They're confused not knowing what's going on - they were traumatized," Minta told ABC.

The trouble arose when the family brought a birthday cake as part of their carry-on luggage and stowed it in an overhead compartment. A flight attendant asked them to move the cake, first to another overhead bin, and then under a seat.

The Metropolitan Government has filed a complaint seeking an injunction to permanently close a controversial swingers club in Madison.

The filing made Thursday in General Sessions court, states that a permit had been issued to operate a church at 520 Lentz Ave in Madison, but instead the owners have been operating a sex club.

The complaint states that Freedom 4 All, Inc. is "maintaining a public nuisance by permitting acts of lewd conduct" and is in violation of city ordinances and state law which prohibit operation of the club within 1,000 feet of a school.

In March, two inspectors from the city's Codes department paid $40 each to enter the club where they witnessed numerous sex acts being performed inside.

Arizona committee passes bill to support sound money, Update: House and Senate passes bill

Silver bullion
An Arizona bill that would eliminate state capital gains taxes on gold and silver specie, and encourage its use as currency, passed an important House committee today. Final approval of the legislation would help undermine the Federal Reserve's monopoly on money.

Rep. Mark Finchem (R-Tucson) introduced House Bill 2014 (HB2014) on Jan. 9. The legislation would eliminate state capital gains taxes on income "derived from the exchange of one kind of legal tender for another kind of legal tender." The bill defines legal tender as "a medium of exchange, including specie, that is authorized by the United States Constitution or Congress for the payment of debts, public charges, taxes and dues." "Specie" means coins having precious metal content.

In effect, passage of the bill would "legalize the Constitution" by treating gold and silver specie as money.

HB2014 passed the House Ways and Means Committee by a 5-0 vote, with four members abstaining.

Update: The bill passed the House of Representatives, next it goes to the Senate:

HB2014 passed the full House by a 35-24 vote."
Update 2: Arizona Senate passes the bill:
Sound money advocates scored a major victory on Wednesday, when the Arizona state senate voted 16-13 to remove all income taxation of precious metals at the state level. The measure heads to Governor Doug Ducey, who is expected to sign it into law.

Under House Bill 2014, introduced by Representative Mark Finchem (R-Tucson), Arizona taxpayers will simply back out all precious metals "gains" and "losses" reported on their federal tax returns from the calculation of their Arizona adjusted gross income (AGI).

If taxpayers own gold to protect themselves against the devaluation of America's paper currency, they frequently end up with a "gain" when exchanging those metals back into dollars. However, this is not necessarily a real gain in terms of a gain in actual purchasing power. This "gain" is often a nominal gain because of the slow but steady devaluation of the dollar. Yet the government nevertheless assesses a tax.

Sound Money Defense League, former presidential candidate Congressman Ron Paul, and Campaign for Liberty helped secure passage of HB 2014 because "it begins to dismantle the Federal Reserve's monopoly on money" according to JP Cortez, an alumnus of Mises University.

Ron Paul noted, "HB 2014 is a very important and timely piece of legislation. The Federal Reserve's failure to reignite the economy with record-low interest rates since the last crash is a sign that we may soon see the dollar's collapse. It is therefore imperative that the law protect people's right to use alternatives to what may soon be virtually worthless Federal Reserve Notes." In early March, Dr. Paul appeared before the state Senate committee that was considering the proposal.

"We ought not to tax money, and that's a good idea. It makes no sense to tax money," Paul told the state senators. "Paper is not money, it's a substitute for money and it's fraud," he added, referring to the fractional-reserve banking practiced by the Federal Reserve and other central banks.

After the committee voted to pass the bill on to the full body of the Senate, Dr. Paul held a rally on the grounds of the state legislature, congratulating supporters of the measure and of sound money.

Paul told the crowd that "they were on the right side of history" and that even though those working to restore constitutional liberty to Arizona and all the states "had a great burden to bear," there are "more than you know" working toward the same goal.

Referring to the bill's elimination of capital gains taxes on gold and silver, the sponsor of the bill, State Representative Mark Finchem, said, "What the IRS has figured out at the federal level is to target inflation as a gain. They call it capital gains."
