Massive three-alarm blaze at Manhattan synagogue under investigation (PHOTOS, VIDEOS)

Synagogue fire
A fire at a synagogue in Manhattan's Lower East Side on Sunday night is under investigation, according to local media. More than 100 firefighters battled the three-alarm blaze, which sent out a dangerously thick blanket of smoke across the city.

The fire engulfed the Congregation Beth Hamedrash synagogue in the Lower East Side at around 7pm local time on Sunday. It quickly grew to a three-alarm fire inside the abandoned building, according to the FDNY.

Thick smoke blanketed the sky over lower Manhattan, prompting authorities to issue an air quality emergency warning, NBC New York reported.

International investigators are hunting for those behind an unprecedented cyber-attack that affected systems in dozens of countries, including at banks, hospitals and government agencies, as security experts sought to contain the fallout.

The assault, which began Friday and was being described as the biggest-ever cyber ransom attack, struck state agencies and major companies around the world -- from Russian banks and British hospitals to FedEx and European car factories.

"The recent attack is at an unprecedented level and will require a complex international investigation to identify the culprits," said Europol, Europe's police agency.

Europol said a special task force at its European Cybercrime Centre was "specially designed to assist in such investigations and will play an important role in supporting the investigation".

Germany's defense minister wants the military to rename German bases bearing the names of Nazi soldiers, including Hitler's propaganda icons, amid a probe into a potential far-right underground movement in the country's armed forces.

The ongoing inquiry has caused outrage in German society, prompting the Defense Ministry to get tough on extremist leanings in the military.

If we want to modernize the 35-year-old set of the Bundeswehr's traditions, we must also address the issue of names given to [army] bases," Ursula von der Leyen, the country's defense minister, told Bild am Sonntag on Sunday.

Comment: It's a wonder that Germany's military has taken this long to consider these issues considering how much collective guilt the German nation professes over their Nazi legacy.

More cover-ups and stalling: Pope Francis admits backlog in processing sex abuse cases against pedophile priests

Pedophile priests, Pope francis pedophile scandals
Have you ever asked yourself why it has been decades now since the Catholic church has had any high-profile sex scandals involving pedophile priests? Apparently, it's because they're doing their best to keep it quiet, at least until now.

According to FoxNews, "Pope Francis acknowledged Saturday that the Vatican has a 2,000-case backlog in processing clerical sex abuse cases and says criticism of the slow pace was justified. But he says more staff are being added and insists the Vatican is 'on the right path.'"

For victims of the alleged abuse, "on the right path" probably translates into, "we're doing nothing about it." For the Catholic Church, arguably the largest religious organization on the planet, to know about 2,000 cases of alleged pedophilia in its ranks, and to be doing nothing about it, may be as egregious as the heinous acts themselves.

The renewed pressure on the Catholic Church, and specifically the Vatican, stems from the resignation of Marie Collins, an Irish pedophile-priest-sex-abuse-survivor who resigned in March from Pope Francis' sex abuse advisory commission.

Collins said she quit because her commission, formulated to root out pedophile priests was being met with, in her words, "unacceptable" levels of resistance from the Vatican. In other words, they were ignoring the recommendations set forth by the investigative and reform group.

Cop beats up mom in front of her kids

police arrest
An innocent mother's assault by a police officer highlights the risk people take when calling 911 for help. Angela Lopez needed the police for help but when they showed up, help was the last thing she got.

The Free Thought Project spoke with Mrs. Lopez, who wants her story told so that others do not share her brutal fate.

On August 16, 2014, Lopez had an altercation with her daughter. So, she called the cops to help her resolve this situation.

"I was involved in a physical incident with my oldest daughter that turned out bad. I was really upset because she had hit me and bit me in the knee. I wanted her and ex-boyfriend out of my home. After they refused to leave, I called 911 to get someone to come out to help me remove or escort them out of my house," Lopez explained.

However, when police arrived, officer Francisco Salazar became instantly belligerent.

Stratfor, the Austin, Texas-based think tank which predicted the imminent collapse of Russia two years ago, has released a new assessment, marking its concern over Moscow's growing clout across the republics of the former Soviet Union thanks to institutions like the Eurasian Economic Union and the Collective Security Treaty Organization.

The private geopolitical intelligence firm, often referred to in the US as the 'Shadow CIA', employs former Agency intelligence analysts, and is known for its secretive links to government officials, multinational corporations and shady private security subcontractors.

Wall Street vs. Main Street: A Tale of Two Justice Systems

tale of two cities
It was the best of times, it was the worst of times, it was the age of wisdom, it was the age of foolishness, it was the epoch of belief, it was the epoch of incredulity, it was the season of Light, it was the season of Darkness, it was the spring of hope, it was the winter of despair, we had everything before us, we had nothing before us, we were all going direct to Heaven, we were all going direct the other way - in short, the period was so far like the present period, that some of its noisiest authorities insisted on its being received, for good or for evil, in the superlative degree of comparison only.

- Charles Dickens, A Tale of Two Cities
One of the major objectives of this site over the years has been to highlight the demoralizing and extremely destructive reality that two completely different justices systems exist in America — one for the wealthy, powerful and connected, and another for everyone else. While there will always be some element of this in any society of humans, extremes can and do occur, and the pendulum now has shifted in these United States to extremely dangerous Banana Republic-like levels.

I've been undergoing a pretty significant change in the way I interpret the world and how to 'be' in it. As I've grappled with how to understand my shifting perspective, I've found that writing down my thoughts has helped to put them in some kind of order, so this is an attempt to continue doing that. I know some of my friends have wondered why I've lately been so critical of the left, my home, so I wanted to share with you what a vocal part of my particular and admittedly self-selected echo chamber is like.

The ultra wealthy no longer have to mix with the ordinary folk at Los Angeles International Airport, thanks to a new $22 million private terminal that shows the rich really do live in a parallel world.

While ordinary passengers tackle '2,200 footsteps' through the hustle and bustle of check-ins, baggage, and crowded TSA lines, members of the new Private Suite make a mere '70 steps' from their car to the plane.

Oh, and they are "all peaceful footsteps," according to the new service, operated by international security consultant, Gavin De Becker and associates.
