#MosulSOS: Civilians at risk of becoming collateral damage in US coalition anti-ISIS strikes

The #MosulSOS project
Hundreds of thousands of civilians in western Mosul are at risk of becoming casualties as the US-led coalition and Iraqi military wage their operation against Islamic State. RT sheds light on their plight.

The #MosulSOS project gathers all of RT's coverage of the deadly siege that began seven months ago.

Constantly at risk of being killed by US-led coalition airstrikes and the fighting between Iraqi troops and IS militants, the civilians of Mosul are facing a dire humanitarian crisis.

"This population is not only exposed to the immediate dangers of the conflict itself and being either targeted or hit as collateral damage, but is also facing the effects of just no longer really having much access to the basic essentials that they need to live," Patrick Hamilton, Red Cross deputy director for the Middle East, said last week.

Hundreds of civilians died throughout the offensive to retake the city of 1.5 million from the terrorist group.

Labour have climbed to 32 per cent in two new polls, the party's highest rating for 180 days.

Significantly, this is higher than the vote share Labour received in the 2015 general election, when Ed Miliband won over 31.2 per cent of voters.

However, the Conservatives still command a hefty lead of between 14 and 15 points, according to the polls conducted by Opinium and ORB.

A German court has instituted legal proceedings against an asylum seeker who cruelly crippled another refugee in a barbaric assault. The attack was allegedly provoked by a quarrel over a debt of €50 ($55).

A 20-year-old refugee who has lived in Germany since 2013 now faces charges of attempted murder and serious bodily harm over what is being described as a "barbaric" and "animalistic" attack that defies understanding.

The suspect allegedly attacked another refugee, 18, who was presumed to be his friend, in October 2016, German media report, citing the regional Prosecutor's Office. He came to the victim's apartment and stabbed him in the neck with two knives. As the victim fell unconscious, the assailant bit off both his ears and then cut off his eyelids with a knife.

Sentence first! Verdict afterward! - The Homeland security goons

Uncle Sam
© Eric Peters Auto
One of the truly scary things about living in The Homeland, as it is officially styled nowadays, is that you are subject to punishment prior to conviction. Merely to be accused is sufficient to deprive you of liberty and property.

And even when - after much expense (yours) and time forever lost - you are eventually able to prove your innocence (as opposed to them having to prove your guilt) those who abused you are never themselves punished for what they did to an innocent person - and good luck getting them to make you whole for what they did to your innocent person.

The WarrnTrr - and The War on Some Drugs - account for much of this, but the rot goes deeper. The Homeland's armed goons - and the Homeland's robed goons - can summarily seize your person, your property and dispose of them as they wish for almost any reason.

Even a trumped-up traffic ticket.

This happened to Melanie Pence in my part of the Homeland, Roanoke Virginia.

Pence was involved in a minor fender-bender and one of the Homeland's armed goons showed up to make the problem worse.

Usually, the armed goons of the Homeland will simply hand out extortion notes demanding that sums of money be given over to the higher-up goons, as punishment for various transgressions of statute - usually having nothing to do with any harm caused.

Usually, you are not forced to hand over money (or other property or your liberty) until after the asserted transgression has been adjudicated and a robed goon has decreed you to be guilty.

Civil rights group calls for end to police chokeholds after Nevada man is killed 'in custody'

A Nevada civil rights group wants to prohibit police from using chokeholds after a Las Vegas officer killed a man who was allegedly "acting erratic" at a hotel with a move designed to render the recipient unconscious without restricting air.

The brand of chokehold in question - a blood choke, or a Lateral Vascular Neck Restraint (LVNR) technique, in sanitized police vernacular. A LVNR is designed to compress the carotid arteries in order to render the subject unconscious within seconds without obstructing the person's trachea, or airway.

Early Sunday morning, two officers with the Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department were approached by a yet to be identified man inside The Venetian hotel and casino on the Las Vegas Strip. The unarmed man was "acting erratic" and told police that people were chasing him. He then ran off, with the unidentified officers in pursuit, according to a police news release.

Police are the "thin blue line between civilization and chaos," President Donald Trump said at a memorial service to slain law enforcement officers, vowing to support the police and step up the "war on crime" in the name of making America safe.

"America stands strong with our men and women in blue," Trump told the assembled officers on Monday at the National Peace Officers Memorial Service outside the US Capitol in Washington, DC. "As long as I'm president, you'll always find an open door to the White House."

"Patriotic Americans of all backgrounds truly support and love our police," the president said. "Next time you see a cop on the beat, take a moment to say two wonderful words which they so readily deserve: 'Thank you.'"

Britain has reached new heights of secularization, with almost half of Britons now identifying as non-religious, a new study reveals.

According to 'The "No Religion" Population of Britain' report by Stephen Bullivant, professor of theology and the sociology of religion at St Mary's University, Twickenham, non-religious people, known as 'nones', account for 48.6 percent of Britain's population.

Although there has been an overall trend towards secularization in Britain, the figures also show record numbers of people from non-Christian faiths, such as Islam and Hinduism.

The number of British people identifying as Christian dropped from 55 percent to 43 percent between 1983 and 2015. By contrast, non-Christian believers such as Muslims and Hindus quadrupled.

The fate of a 10-year-old girl who fell pregnant after reportedly being raped by her stepfather lies in the hands of an Indian court, which will decide whether she can have an abortion or be forced to deliver the child.

The girl is currently five months pregnant, with local media reporting that she was allegedly raped multiple times by her own stepfather, who is also her paternal uncle, according to NDTV.

The medical board of the Post Graduate Institute of Medical Sciences (PGIMS) met on Monday to discuss the young girl's situation, determining that both options - delivery and termination - are equally risky for the girl's health.

"The board has found that both the situations - abortion at present and delivery - could be equally dangerous for the victim. So the court will be able to better assess what should be done now," Dr. Prashant Kumar of the PGIMS said, as quoted by the Hindustan Times.
