The Philippines military has said that the Islamic State-linked militants occupying the city of Marawi are "too degraded" to launch further attacks, however there are fears that some jihadists may have escaped the besieged city.

Speaking at a press briefing Friday, a spokesman for the armed forces conceded that some of the jihadists who occupied the city in the southern province of Mindanao may have escaped the city by posing as evacuees.

Brigadier General Restituto Padilla said security has been tightened in nearby cities Iligan and Cagayan de Oro, and authorities are on the lookout for anyone who might "attempt to sow some confusion or sow terror," Reuters report.

Camille Paglia interview: Trump, Democrats, Transgenderism, and Islamist terror

Camille Paglia
© Michael LionstarCamille Paglia
In a wide-ranging interview Paglia talks about Donald Trump's successes, how Chuck Schumer emboldened the "resistance," why the left can't condemn Islamist terrorism, and "the cold biological truth that sex changes are impossible."

Camille Paglia is one America's smartest and most fearless writers. Like Elvis, she's the kind of superstar who really needs no introduction—though it is worth pointing out that Pantheon has just published a collection of her essays on sex, gender, and feminism, titled Free Women, Free Men. It's fantastic and if you love her work, it's must-reading. (And there's another collection due out in the Fall of 2018, which is more good news.)

Last week I sat down with Paglia over email to talk about Donald Trump, Islamist terrorism, and the transgender crusade. Here's a transcript of our conversation:

JVL: Donald Trump has recently feuded with Jim Comey, Bob Mueller, Sadiq Kahn, Emmanuel Macron, Angela Merkel, NATO—we'll stop the list there. You were one of a very small number of people who understood Trump's populist appeal early on. Looking at his presidency so far, do think he's continuing to deliver on that appeal? What is he doing right? What is he doing wrong?

Camille Paglia: Some background is necessary. First of all, I must make my political affiliations crystal clear. I am a registered Democrat who voted for Bernie Sanders in the 2016 primary and for Jill Stein in the general election. Since last Fall, I've had my eye on Kamala Harris, the new senator from California, and I hope to vote for her in the next presidential primary.

The leader of an Indian nationalist Hindu organization has stirred up controversy by saying that beef-eaters should be hanged in public. The inflammatory statement has prompted some MPs to demand her arrest.

Sadhvi Saraswati, the leader of the nationalist Vishwa Hindu Parishad (VHP) organization, made the comment while speaking at the All India Hindu Convention in Panaji, Goa, on Thursday.
"I would recommend to the government of India that those who consider it a status symbol to eat the meat of one's own mother should be hanged in public," Saraswati said, as quoted by the Press Trust of India.

An unprecedented bill supporting the idea of universal basic income (UBI) has been introduced in the American state of Hawaii.

The bill, titled House Concurrent Resolution 89, was brought by Hawaii State Representative Chris Lee and was passed by both houses of the state legislature in a unanimous vote.

The resolution declares that all the islanders "deserve basic financial security."

It also orders government offices to weigh the state's economy and find ways to ensure all families have basic financial security, including an evaluation of different forms of a full or partial universal basic income.
"As innovation and automation and inequality disrupt our economy, we want to make sure that everybody benefits and nobody is left behind. It's past time that we had a serious talk about not just tweaking our economic policies, but having a new discussion from the ground up about what our values and priorities are," said Lee as quoted by US online magazine Mother Jones.

A New Jersey high school will reprint its yearbook to include an unedited photo of a student's Donald Trump T-shirt, the district superintendent has announced. The logo was edited out in the original version, causing the yearbook adviser's suspension.

Superintendent Cheryl Dyer made the announcement in a letter issued to parents of Wall Township High School students on Thursday.
"I cannot allow the intentional change that was not based on dress code to be ignored," Dyer wrote, as quoted by NJ.com.

"I am the chief school administrator in this district, and I take responsibility for the actions of those who are employed here. Therefore, I have determined that a re-issuance of the yearbook is necessary," she added.
The controversy surrounds a "TRUMP Make America Great Again" T-shirt worn by junior Grant Berardo.

Germany's first "liberal mosque" has opened inside a Protestant church in Berlin. Niqabs and burkas will be banned from the place of worship, with its organizer saying they are a "political statement" and "have nothing to do with religion."

"Fundamentally, the mosque's door is open for everyone, with one exception: No one will come in with a niqab or burka," organizer Seyran Ates, who moved to Germany from Turkey when she was six years old, told Spiegel Online.

Banning the headwear often worn by females in the Muslim community isn't the only modern-day twist being brought to the Ibn Ruschd-Goethe mosque, which is named after Islamic philosopher Ibn Rushd (Averroes) and iconic German author Johann Wolfgang von Goethe, according to the Berliner Morgenpost.

According to Ates, men and women will also be allowed to pray and preach together, rather than separately. Members of the LGBT community will also be welcomed.

Sunni and Shiite Muslims are also encouraged to pray together at the mosque.

Numerous incidents haunted NATO's Spring Storm 2017 large-scale exercise in Estonia till the very end. In one of the most recent incidents, a local resident in the Kadrina Volost district of Estonia fired warning shots at NATO troops who were trespassing on his territory. The troops were taking part in the final stage of the drills.

According to Stolitsa.ee the incident took place on May 25 when the local police received a call saying that a 56-year-old resident of Ohepalu village threatened the NATO troops and shot a gun to warn them.

No one was hurt during the incident however; criminal proceedings have been launched against him. He could face a fine or even imprisonment to up to five years.

Comment: Sputnik reports more on NATO, the global bully, terrorizing the residents of the countries it claims to 'protect from Russian aggression'.
A column of NATO military equipment drove straight into a chunk of private property in rural Latvia and started firing, frightening the owner and leaving him indignant over the fact that the alliance did not ask his permission or even inform him of their plans. [...]

On Tuesday, an indignant Latvian man posted evidence of another ugly incident involving NATO troops, presumably training in the ongoing BALTOPS-2017 exercises. In an angry post on his Facebook page, Kristaps Ozlins, the owner of a piece of land in rural Latvia, described his shock when NATO troops and military equipment suddenly showed up on his territory uninvited and started shooting.

Robert Doggart, a former independent Tennessee congressional candidate, has been sentenced to jail for 20 years for his plot to burn down a mosque, a school and a cafeteria in the state of New York.

On Wednesday, Doggart was sentenced by US District Judge Curtis Collier in Chattanooga, Tennessee, according to Times Free Press.

He was recently convicted in Chattanooga in February for recruiting people to commit acts such as arson and to violate civil rights, according to Reuters.

Doggart also tried to recruit new members for a militia by using right-wing social media websites from January through April 2015. Among them was a confidential informant who recorded their conversations. Doggart was interested in starting a militia to resist the US government, which he thought would impose martial law on April 15, 2015.
"It's not just a war against Islam or Islamberg," he said, "It's a war with the federal government," explained Saeed Mody, a prosecutor from the Department of Justice's Civil Rights Division, according to Times Free Press.

Huge demonstration in Cologne planned against terrorism, major German-Turkish Muslim group opts out

A massive anti-terrorist march organized by Muslim activists is to take place in the German city of Cologne. However, the Turkish-Islamic Union for Religious Affairs (DITIB), one of the largest Muslim associations in Germany, has refused to take part.

The march, which will be held under the slogan "Not with us," is scheduled for Saturday, June 17. It was organized by a group of prominent German Muslim public figures, including Lamya Kaddor, an Islamic scholar and author, and Tarek Mohamad, a Muslim peace activist.

The attacks by people who justify their acts by invoking Islam, without justification, are becoming more frequent," the organizers said on the rally's official website, as they called on Muslims and non-Muslims to join the march to condemn the terrorists and their violence.
"Our faith is being abused, defiled, insulted, and distorted into something unrecognizable by this," the organizers also said, adding that it is "our duty to stand against terrorists."
