Hours before hundreds of people gathered in the city of Akron, Ohio, to pay their respects to the victims of the deadly attack in Charlottesville, Virginia, police arrested a man with multiple explosive devices in his car.

Police arrested Elijah Blankenship, 26, just before 4:00pm Wednesday after finding a pipe bomb and another unidentified explosive in his car. The report said the car was parked about 4 miles from downtown Akron, where 500 people would later gather to honor the victims of a deadly attack at the "Unite the Right" rally in Charlottesville last week, according to court records obtained by the Cleveland Plain Dealer.

Police responded to the scene after a K9 unit alerted on Blankenship's vehicle, prompting the Summit County Bomb Squad to sweep of the area, according to WEWS. Police allowed the vigil to continue as planned after they found nothing else of concern during the sweep.

Blankenship reportedly told officers that the explosives, which police reports said appeared to be homemade, were fireworks. He also told police that he was carrying a knife, which investigators later identified as stolen.

Las Vegas cop charged with manslaughter after tasing a man seven times and choking him to death

police tasing
Earlier this year, body camera video from Las Vegas police showed the horrifying and fatal confrontation between Tashi Brown and multiple cops with the LVPD. One of those cops, Kenneth Lopera was just arraigned this week on charges of manslaughter and oppression under color of office.

Brown had committed no crime. In fact, it was later reported by the department that had the unarmed man survived this encounter, police would've had nothing to charge him with.

Sadly, however, because of Lopera's incompetence and violence, Brown is dead.

In spite of Las Vegas cops killing many people over the last three decades, Lopera is the first LVPD cop to face a manslaughter charge since 1990, according to the AP.

Naturally, Las Vegas Police Protective Association official Steve Grammas said Lopera did nothing criminal and was using a department-approved method to restrain Brown, according to the AP.

Cops brutalize elderly man trying to intervene in a domestic dispute

police assault
Critics are saying police have reached a new behavioral low with the way they dealt with a 72-year-old man who is now suing the White Plains Police Department for unnecessary and excessive force, and has the injuries to prove it.

Charles Pateman was trying to intervene in a domestic dispute between his fiance' and her daughter. The residential surveillance camera shows the elderly man attempting to get into the elevator to go up to his apartment when police grabbed the well-known businessman and developer, slamming him into the wall and then the floor. After several moments of rough handling, they then placed him in handcuffs.

The officers involved demanded Pateman "stand up or we'll drag you out," a command which arguably could be difficult for a person over the age of 70 to comply with.

After he got to his feet, and was taken to the squad car, Mr. Pateman asked the arresting officer to loosen his handcuffs. The reasonable request was answered rather sarcastically as the officer replied, "they're not built for comfort, sir."

Duterte faces outrage, nationwide revolt as schoolboy is killed in drugs war

Justice Kian

A horrifying image of a schoolboy being dragged to a violent death in a dirty alleyway has galvanised the Philippines against a brutal state-led war on drugs that has killed over 12,500 people in the last year.

For a nation now largely immune to the bloodied corpses of alleged small time drugs users and dealers dumped on the streets, the graphic reports of the final moments of Kian Delos Santos, 17, who was allegedly shot three times by undercover police officers, have been too much to bear.

His killing last week has united the public, senior politicians and the Catholic Church into the most significant sweep of mass protests since President Rodrigo Duterte pushed for a savage crackdown on drugs after his election last June. Most of the 12,500 casualties have been killed by masked assassins. An estimated 3,500 have been killed in police shoot-outs, which officers often claim were self-defence.

In the case of Delos Santos, the police initially claimed he had fired first. But their story was contradicted by witnesses and CCTV footage that showed the teenager being dragged down alleyways into a dead-end corner where he was asked to run with a gun, and shot when he did. He was heard screaming "Please can I go home, I have school tomorrow."

Delos Santos is one of 81 people killed last week during mass police raids in what was the bloodiest period of the drugs war so far. His bullet-ridden, semi-naked body was found in a foetal position with a gun in his hand.

Comment: The angst and sorrow of this tragedy has rallied the people. Without public support for the 'elimination' of drug offenders and dealers, Duterte becomes increasingly vulnerable unless he finds the means to control runaway carnage and modify his stance. With this graphic example of backwoods justice gone wrong, it might be high time to revise his drug war -- starting last week.

Teen pleads guilty to lesser charge in 'Slender Man' web meme-related stabbing attack

Slender Man murder
One of two Wisconsin girls charged with repeatedly stabbing a classmate to impress the fictitious horror character Slender Man pleaded guilty Monday, but she still faces a trial in the case next month focused on her mental health.

Anissa Weier, 15, pleaded guilty to attempted second-degree homicide as a party to a crime, with use of a deadly weapon. She initially faced a charge of attempted first-degree intentional homicide in the 2014 attack on Payton Leutner in park in Waukesha, a city west of Milwaukee.

Weier spoke at length during the hearing, telling Waukesha County Circuit Judge Michael O. Bohren that she understood her plea and its ramifications. She also explained her motivation for participating in her classmate's stabbing.

"I believed that if I didn't go through with it, Slender Man would come and attack and kill myself, my friends and my family. Those I cared about the most," she said.

Comment: From Wikipedia we get this description of the Slender Man:
The Slender Man (also known as Slenderman) is a fictional supernatural character that originated as a creepypasta Internet meme created by Something Awful forums user Eric Knudsen (also known as "Victor Surge") in 2009.[1] It is depicted as resembling a thin, unnaturally tall man with a blank and usually featureless face, wearing a black suit.

Stories of the Slender Man commonly feature him stalking, abducting or traumatizing people, particularly children.[2] The Slender Man is not confined to a single narrative, but appears in many disparate works of fiction, typically composed online.[3][4] Fiction relating to the Slender Man encompasses many media, including literature, art and video series such as Marble Hornets. Outside of online fiction, the Slender Man has had impact on popular culture, having been referenced in the video game Minecraft and generated video games of his own, such as Slender: The Eight Pages and Slender: The Arrival.

The airport at Calgary has come under fire after replacing disabled parking places with lucrative "Lexus-only" spaces.

According to CBC Calgary News, the airport received a complaint from a family who found five disabled parking bays marked as premium spaces for owners of Lexus-branded vehicles.

Lexus Canada told the media it was unaware the airport's marketing campaign would involve the removal of parking spaces for travelers with disabilities.

"Lexus Canada would like to offer our heartfelt apologies to anyone who may have been affected or offended by a recent marketing campaign at the Calgary airport... We have asked the airport to correct the situation as quickly as possible by returning these parking spaces to their intended use," Michael Bouliane, manager of corporate communications at Lexus wrote.

The Fancy Bears hack group said on Tuesday the doping tests of 200 football players turned out to be positive in 2016. The group said that the publication is aimed at proving that officials lied saying that football was free of doping.

"You can have a look at WADA [World Anti-Doping Agency] documents revealing that more than 150 players were caught doping in 2015. The next year this number increased up to 200 athletes," Fancy Bears said on its website after publishing a fresh WADA leak on doping in football.

"Football players and officials unanimously affirm that this kind of sport is free of doping. Our team perceived these numerous claims as a challenge and now we will prove they are lying," the hackers added.

The list reportedly includes Argentinian footballers Diego Milito, Carlos Tevez, Gabriel Heinze, Slovakian Martin Jakubko, Germany's Mario Gomez and Dennis Aogo, Italian Mauro Camoranesi, Dutchman Dirk Kuyt and several other players from Greece, Algeria, the US.

Last year, Fancy Bears hacked a number of confidential WADA documents proving that a number of prominent athletes such as tennis players Rafael Nadal, Venus and Serena Williams, as well as artistic gymnast Simone Biles, used banned drugs under the Therapeutic Use Exemptions program.

Despite a growing push across the US to dismantle monuments to Confederate generals and those who fought for the South during the American Civil War, the majority of Americans believe they should be kept in public spaces, a new poll says.

The Reuters/Ipsos opinion poll found that 54 percent of adults believe Confederate monuments "should remain in all public spaces." In contrast, 27 percent said they "should be removed from all public spaces." The rest - 19 percent - said they "don't know."

Responses to the poll were split along racial and party lines, with white people and Republicans in favor of preservation, while Democrats and minorities tended to support removal.

The poll was conducted online in English throughout the US from August 18-21, gathering responses from 2,149 people, including 874 Democrats and 763 Republicans.

2 dead, 6 injured in stabbing attack in Turku, Finland - UPDATE

Two people died and six were injured in an attack in the Finnish city of Turku on Friday, police said.

Police said that there was currently just a single suspect in the stabbing case, adding that it was unclear if the incident was related to terrorism.
The police is searching for possible more perpetrators in Turku. People are asked to leave and avoid the center of Turku.

— L-S poliisi (@L_S_poliisi) August 18, 2017
The Turun Sanomat newspaper reported that an elderly woman and a young boy were among the injured, citing an eyewitness.

Comment: After evaluating "information received during the night", authorities are now investigating this as a terror attack. The suspect is an 18-year-old Moroccan. Five additional suspects, also Moroccans, have been detained in connection; they were in contact with the main suspect.

Update: The suspect has been identified as an asylum seeker. He arrived in Finland in 2016. Authorities say he deliberately targeted women. After being shot by police, the suspect is now being treated in hospital. An international arrest warrant for a sixth suspect was also issued.

Update (Aug. 22): More details have been released on the suspect accused of killing 2 and injuring 8 last week: Abderrahman Mechkah. He had previously lived in Germany in 2015 and 2016 for several months before moving to Finland, where he was denied asylum:
[Mechkah] did not apply for asylum in Germany during his stay, a spokeswoman for Germany's interior minister told the media on Monday. However, he had been assisted by a civil servant, German officials say, without commenting further.
...
According to Finland's Yle news, his asylum application was rejected, although he then appealed.

"I confirm that the main suspect has been in the process of asylum-seeking in Finland and the decision he had [previously] received was appealed," Yle cited the head of Finland's National Bureau of Investigation (KRP), Robin Lardot, as saying.

Earlier this year authorities in southwest Finland were tipped off on the suspect's alleged "radicalization and extremist thinking," according to Yle. However, the tip-off did not contain information about any concrete threat, so it apparently was not investigated further. The Moroccan reportedly was not on Finland's watch list for possible terrorism-related issues.

"In the past couple of years, authorities have received more than 1,000 tip-offs. We aim to review all [of them], but the scrutiny requires strong prioritization. Priority is given to the tip-offs containing information about a concrete threat," Yle cited police official Jyri Rantala as saying.

Police are also investigating four other Moroccans in connection with the attack. All of them deny involvement. Pre-trial detention has been requested for five men, including the suspected attacker, Reuters reported on Monday.

The main suspect behind Finland's first-ever terrorist attack is now in hospital, after he was shot in the leg by police reacting to the stabbing attack. Two Finnish citizens were killed in the attack, with UK and Italian citizens reportedly among the injured.

Swedish police chief: It's the Antifas, not the Nazis, who are the agents of violence

This is a refreshingly realistic appraisal - especially coming from Sweden - of who the agents of violence are in political demonstrations.
