Italy: Lombardy governor given police escort as COVID anger mounts

The governor of Lombardy, the northern region at the epicentre of Italy's coronavirus outbreak, said on Wednesday that he had been given a police escort after growing criticism of his administration's handling of the crisis.

Lombardy, Italy's richest and most populous region and the motor of its economy, is one of the worst affected areas of the world by the coronavirus, accounting for around half of the country's more than 32,000 dead.

The regional government, controlled by opposition leader Matteo Salvini's anti-immigrant League party, has seen approval ratings plunge amid angry attacks on its response and on health sector reforms by previous League governments that many say left the region badly prepared to face the epidemic.

Regional governor Attilio Fontana, a close Salvini ally, gave no details of the security escort but said the decision to assign one had not been at his request but had been decided by the "relevant authorities".
"I'm sorry for the sake of my family who have been a bit worried. Over recent days, there's been too much venom. Unfortunately, it's the result of lies told by certain political forces which have poisoned the atmosphere and stirred up this dangerous climate of hatred."
The decision to assign the escort, as Italy has begun to ease lockdown restrictions imposed almost three months ago, highlighted widespread public anger at the handling of both the health crisis and the lockdown measures.

It's completely predictable that politicians and news outlets are pointing the finger at Russia for riots across the US, analysts told RT, since blaming the Kremlin for everything inconvenient has become an American pastime.

Nationwide demonstrations against the death of George Floyd have descended into rioting and looting in many cities, creating chaos - as well as political opportunism. Efforts to scapegoat Russia for the crisis are par for the course, George Szamuely, a senior research fellow at the Global Policy Institute told RT. According to Szamuely, America's "liberal elite" has latched onto the idea that the Kremlin is lurking around every corner - a "habit" that took root after Hillary Clinton lost the 2016 presidential election.
"It was entirely to be expected. I was wondering how long it would take the mainstream media to find a Russian angle. Of course, there's not the slightest evidence for this, but that's to be expected. The people who are presenting this whole 'Russia is to blame' narrative, they still haven't got over 2016. It's a replay of the same Trump-Russia collusion story for which there has been no evidence."
He predicted that the riots would ultimately end up helping US President Donald Trump politically, as more and more Americans demand a return to law and order. As such, Democrats are desperate to find some way of painting the mayhem as yet another sinister - and baseless - Trump-Russia conspiracy.

Comment: No big surprise. A certain percentage of the clueless, biased, corrupted, insensitive population fans the flames of this leftist default narrative. The US sees Russia every time it looks in the mirror.

CNN reporter Omar Jimenez's arrest during riots in Minneapolis over police brutality is a banal chapter in the history of police abuse of reporters. My own arrest and the arrests of my peers in alternative media demonstrate this.

The camera still rolled as police in Minneapolis arrested reporter Jimenez on Friday morning. Astonished anchor John Berman remarked that "this is an American television reporter...being led away by police officers." Unlike Jimenez, my own arrest while reporting on a riot for Russian television was not celebrated as an act of journalistic heroism.

On the day of Donald Trump's inauguration to the presidency, protesters took over the streets of DC. I live-streamed most of the protest and followed the [anarchist] "black bloc," dodging tear gas and pepper spray. At one point, I heard shouts of "move," and as I began to take my first step I was struck from behind, I believe by a baton. I got back up and started again. A short while later, after my stream went down, I was hit close to point-blank in the face by pepper spray, had "stingball grenades" deployed within feet of me, and was arrested. Like the CNN reporter, I showed my press credentials.

New York makes it felony for officials to share illegal immigrant driver data with ICE

A change to New York's controversial "Green Light Law" means that state officials who share illegal immigrants' driver data with federal immigration enforcement agencies could face a felony charge.

WKBW first reported that the law, which went into effect in January and primarily allows illegal immigrants to receive driver's licenses, was amended as part of the state's 2020 budget and signed by Democratic Gov. Andrew Cuomo in April.

The original law went a step further than similar laws in other states by forbidding state Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) agencies from sharing data with immigration authorities like Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) and Customs and Border Protection (CBP). But the new amendment goes even further and makes it a class E felony for officials to share the information.

Armed with brooms and buckets, Minneapolis residents have poured into the streets - not to riot this time, but to help clean up their charred, looted city.

As nationwide protests divide and polarize Americans, Minneapolitans have demonstrated the power of kindness and cooperation. Volunteers gathered on Saturday to haul away rubble and remove the debris left in the wake of several nights of destruction. Others washed graffiti off the sides of buildings. Residents were also spotted handing out food and water to those who needed it.

First of all, a politically incorrect statement. The people who are rioting over the death of George Floyd, who are destroying businesses and homes and property of people who had nothing to do with this unfortunate man's death, should be punished according to the law just as you or I would be if we were to do these things. There should be simply no tolerance for such actions. Yet in these cities the posture of law enforcement is to stand down and let these people rampage and destroy things, as though they have some special privilege to do so. In fact the stance of the liberal governments in these cities, in letting the riots continue, only further entrenches prejudice. This is a bait and switch to be perpetrated on the African-American community and it is a travesty that they continue to be taken in by such optics and "expressions of outrage."

However, we want to make some other observations about this new wave of riots:
  • Their flareup amidst the COVID-19 crisis shows that apparently we can be too much in danger to be allowed to go to church, but that it is okay to go burn cities down together in large mobs.
  • I guess the coronavirus gets killed by building fires, is that correct?
  • Or were the rioting mobs all practicing social distancing and staying six feet or more apart from one another as they threw their Molotov cocktails?
  • CNN reports the riots are taking place in the following cities: Minneapolis / St Paul, MN; Phoenix, AZ; Denver, CO; Louisville, KY; Memphis, TN and Columbus, Ohio.

National Guard to be 'FULLY MOBILIZED' in Minnesota, governor calls George Floyd protests 'attack' on civil society

The governor of Minnesota has pledged to "fully mobilize" the National Guard saying that the protests that have gripped the state are no longer about the death of George Floyd but rather an "attack" on civil society.

"The situation in Minnesota is no longer in any way about the murder of George Floyd. It is about attacking civil society, instilling fear and disrupting our great cities," Governor Tim Walz said during a press conference on Saturday.

Walz said he arrived at the decision to fully mobilize the National Guard for the first time in Minnesota's history after speaking with the Secretary of Defense and the Chairman of the Joint Chiefs, as well as with mayors from across the country.

Comment: Utah has followed suit in mobilizing its contingent as well as, with Salt Lake City declaring a curfew
Herbert directed the National Guard to "help control the escalating situation" in Salt Lake City, while calling on protesters to behave peacefully.

"We are in close contact with our Department of Public Safety and receiving regular updates," the governor said.

Herbert's announcement came around the same time as Salt Lake City Mayor Erin Mendenhall issued an 8pm curfew.

Washington, DC has also mobilized the National Guard, as local police have the added responsibility of protecting the White House:
The guardsmen were mobilized after a request from the US Park Police, the DC National Guard (DCNG) commander, Major General William J. Walker said.

"The DCNG is always ready to assist District and Federal agencies to protect human life and property," he noted.

Protesters had earlier pushed security barricades further down Pennsylvania Avenue and climbed on the roofs of Secret Service vehicles outside the White House, demanding justice for George Floyd, an unarmed black man who died during an arrest attempt by a white officer earlier this week.

More than four million Russian businesses saw their revenues falling by a third due to the coronavirus outbreak and measures to contain it, according to a report submitted to President Vladimir Putin.

This is nearly 67 percent of the total of over six million small and medium-sized enterprises, large companies and individual entrepreneurs working in the country, Russia's business ombudsman, Boris Titov, said in his report on Thursday.

According to the survey cited in the document, more than half of firms called the situation they're facing a "crisis" and "catastrophe," while six in ten said their chances of survival are below fifty percent.

President Donald Trump is right that social media companies have been targeting conservatives. Twitter, in particular, has been engaging in a relentless attack on the American political process by censoring conservatives.

Now that has escalated to fact-checking the president nearly five months from a presidential election.

The Media Research Center released a report in 2018, which found that Twitter led in censoring the right. That hasn't changed. Project Veritas caught Twitter with hidden camera interviews admitting the process of shadow banning — which means content is hidden from users without the poster ever knowing it. One engineer admitted that accounts were flagged as bots simply by searching for words such as "America" and "God." Twitter's rules have been influenced by liberal think tanks like the Anti-Defamation League and the Southern Poverty Law Center. Since then, Twitter has gotten worse.
