Turning tables: Conservatives 'call' to cancel Yale for being named after slave trader

Conservatives got #CancelYale trending on Twitter and targeted liberals like Hillary Clinton in their effort to troll the left, calling for the Ivy League school to change its name because it's named after a slave trader.

Right-wing pundit Jesse Kelly kicked off the hashtag on Saturday by noting that Yale University is named after Elihu Yale, a British merchant and slave trader.

"Yale University was named for Elihu Yale. Not just a man who had slaves. An actual slave trader. I call on @Yale to change its name immediately and strip the name of Yale from every building, piece of paper, and merchandise. Otherwise, they hate black people," Kelly tweeted.

The tweet may be satirical, but it uses the same basic logic applied to other recent examples of cancel culture promoted by Black Lives Matter activists amid the ongoing protests across the nation over the death of George Floyd.

Numerous companies have promised to change their logos for being insensitive, historical monuments have been ripped down by protesters, and even country band Lady Antebellum shortened their name to axe any connections to the Confederate South.

The growing frustration over "cancellations" fed into Kelly's hashtag, as thousands joined in on targeting Yale.

Comment: Funny, but scary. If Kelly's trolling actually sways the woke mob, at least we'll know they're sincere. If not, it pretty much shows that their antics are pure political provocation. Their cultural targets are chosen to elicit reactions from their political enemies - not because their slogans are anything more than skin deep. In other words, the woke left are the actual trolls. They're just not joking. They actually want to tear the world down.

Three people have died and another three have been seriously injured after a stabbing attack on Saturday night in Reading, police have confirmed.

A 25-year-old man from Reading, about 40 miles west of London, was arrested at the scene on suspicion of murder and is in custody, Thames Valley police said. They are not looking for anyone else in connection with the incident.

The attack was "not currently being treated as a terrorism incident". However, DCI Ian Hunter said police were keeping an open mind on the motive and were being supported by counter-terrorism police.

Hunter said: "There is no intelligence to suggest that there is any further danger to the public. However, we urge people to remain vigilant and report anything suspicious by calling police."

Several hours after the stabbings, police raided a block of flats in the town. Photos from the scene of the raid showed counter-terrorism specialist firearms officers were present.

The burgeoning 'cancel culture' has forced Amazon to ax an ad campaign for a book by a Wall Street Journal author which is critical of liberal views on transgender identity, its publishing company has said.

Regnery Publishing said that Jeff Bezos' company suspended their paid ad for the book 'Irreversible Damage: The Transgender Craze Seducing Our Daughters' by Wall Street Journal writer Abigail Shrier.

According to the author, the book explores the idea that "trans-identification has become a peer contagion among teen girls."

New York City has reported a major increase in murders and shootings. The news comes as a man was killed in the city while washing his car, and a 92-year-old woman was assaulted in a seemingly random attack.

"Earlier today, police officers from the 75th Precinct responded to a call of a male shot in front of 334 Milford Street. When they arrived, they discovered a 35-year-old male with a gunshot wound to the neck," the NYPD's Chief of Detectives Rodney Harrison tweeted, along with video of the disturbing incident.

The footage shows a man wiping down the tire of his car when a passerby stops and fires a shot into the back of his neck. The man washing his car falls, and the shooter proceeds to continue his walk down the street. There is no known motive for the crime, and the killer is at large.

Comment: When seeing data and incidents such as the above, it's difficult to understand anyone's desire to "defund police" and leave cities unprotected so that criminals can roam freely.

Melissa Rolfe, the stepmother of former Atlanta, Georgia, Police Officer Garrett Rolfe, was fired from her job at Equity Prime Mortgage LLC.

The termination has sparked outrage on social media, where some people claimed that Melissa Rolfe was fired because of her association with the former officer, who was criminally charged in the shooting death of Rayshard Brooks. One Twitter user wrote in response: "Do NOT use @equity_prime or do ANY business with this HORRIBLE Company."

However, in a statement, the company denied that claim and indicated that Melissa Rolfe's views had created a hostile work environment. Equity did not specify what those views were. Here is the company's statement, which it released late in the evening on June 18:

A statue of George Washington was pulled down by protesters on Thursday night, which was Juneteenth eve, reports CBS Portland affiliate KOIN-TV. The nation's first president owned slaves.

KOIN said Thursday marked the 21st day of demonstrations for racial justice and police reform sparked by the death of George Floyd at the hands of Minneapolis police. Two groups — Rose City Justice and Lavender Caucus — hosted a sit-in rally at Jefferson High School in the evening where community members shared their experiences with racism with a crowd of a few hundred.

A separate group of about 20 people met around 10 p.m. at the site of the large bronze statue of Washington.

Bags full of human remains were discovered along the shoreline in Seattle, police said Friday night.

The discovery included "several bags," and at least one was in the water, the Seattle Police Department said in a statement.

Officers responded to a park along Elliott Bay, on a point across from the city's main waterfront and Pike Place Market, after someone reported a "suspicious bag on the beach," the department said.

Detectives responded after officers determined the contents to be remains, police said. Identities of the dead or the number of bodies possibly involved was unknown.

The King County Medical Examiner's Office was working with detectives. "This remains an active and ongoing investigation," the Seattle department said.

The 58-year-old British socialite has all but disappeared from radars, as her former boyfriend and suspected accomplice Jeffrey Epstein faced grave child sex trafficking charges. Although Maxwell is not a French citizen, she was born there, which means that she could escape potential extradition to the United States.

Ghislaine Maxwell is hiding out in Paris to avoid being interviewed by US investigators looking into child sexual assault allegations against Jeffrey Epstein, The Sun reports, citing sources with knowledge of the situation.

It is understood that the British media heiress was seen in the French capital in March before city authorities announced a lockdown due to the coronavirus outbreak.
