How much of what went on in the Middle Ages and early-modern periods do we look back on with abhorrence and a certain amount of perplexity? Burning witches at the stake, lynch mobs, self-flagellation - what possessed people to do such things, we wonder.

But take a step back, look about and you see many of these practices are still flourishing today, though they go by different names.

Here are just some of them.

Let's start with excommunication. Excommunication meant so much more than being banned from taking communion. It involved you being shunned, shamed, spiritually condemned, even banished. Only through some kind of heavy penance - often a very public, lengthy and humiliating contrition - could you and your reputation be redeemed.

Excommunication became a powerful political weapon. It was dished out to enemies of the faith to destroy their legitimacy. Often it was used as a punishment for sins as minor as uttering the wrong opinion.

Comment: "Those who don't learn from history are doomed to repeat it", and for all high civilizations that have gone before us the result was a cataclysmic collapse and a return to the simple life - for the lucky few that survived:

The bad-faith tactics employed by two Australian reporters on separate newspapers that were designed to smear the climate dissenter shows the environmental press is little more than the provisional wing of Extinction Rebellion.

It's a well-worn trope these days that environmentalism has come to fill the God-shaped hole left in many a Western heart. They have their child saints (Greta), their wise old sages (Sir David Attenborough), their sacred texts ('The Uninhabitable Earth') and, obviously, they're predicting the end of the world. But what really brings out their zealotry is the way they treat apostates. Take the recent case of Mr Mike Shellenberger.

Shellenberger is a well-known American green campaigner with previously impeccable lefty credentials guaranteed to get him invited to all the right drinks parties. He was Time 2008 Hero of the Environment and was so left-wing, he even spent time living in Nicaragua to show solidarity with the Sandinistas.

An effigy of an ungulate was set on fire in Portland, Oregon, and the rendering of Hans Christian Andersen's creation in Copenhagen was dubbed a "racist fish," in the latest childish outburst from ridiculous rioters.

The latest statues to fall victim to the marauding hordes in America and Europe include an elk and the Little Mermaid. A 120-year-old sculpture of the majestic woodland creature was set alight in Portland because of racism, or police brutality, or it being a day with a 'y' in the name... no one has actually bothered to explain yet. It's now been removed and requires extensive repair. Meanwhile, in Copenhagen, the 107-year-old sculpture of Hans Christian Andersen's most famous character had "Racist fish" scrawled on it for similarly obscure reasons.

It's high time we admitted that this is just vandalism, that there's no conceivable political motivation for doing any of this anymore. There wasn't really in the first place, either - it was just an excuse for civil disobedience, but those first protesters at least picked targets that had a tangential link to their cause. Obviously, this declined very quickly, having begun with statues of slavers, slave owners and confederate generals, but rapidly ending up with anyone who'd said anything ever that was even moderately critical of foreigners. How the same set of protesters can argue that statues of Robert E Lee and Abraham Lincoln need to be ripped down will never not baffle me, in much the same way that alleged anti-Nazis and anti-colonialists agitating for ripping down statues of Churchill and Gandhi leave me dumbstruck.

Judge orders 'destruction' of Guiffre's evidence against Jeffrey Epstein

U.S. District Court Judge Loretta Preska, who was appointed by George Herbert Walker Bush, and whom his son had considered promoting maybe to the U.S. Supreme Court, ruled in a case on July 1st, ordering the attorneys for one of Jeffrey Epstein's alleged victims, Virginia (Roberts) Guiffre, to "destroy" a list of men who had taken advantage of Epstein's "girls." This action pertains to a case not only against Epstein, who is dead, but against his friend and colleague Ghislaine Maxwell, who happened to become arrested by the FBI in Bedford New Hampshire the very next day, on July 2nd.

Judge Preska said that Giuffre's attorneys
"Cooper & Kirk shall destroy (a) all materials from Giuffre v. Maxwell, No. 15 Civ. 7433, currently in its possession, save for the transcript of Ms. Giuffre's deposition in that case and (b) all work product derived from the Maxwell materials. Cooper & Kirk shall submit to the Court an affidavit detailing the steps that it took to destroy the materials."

In its latest attempt to tar US President Donald Trump's event at Mt. Rushmore, CNN framed the iconic monument as a homage to slavery, despite previously dubbing it a salute to "four great presidents."

CNN correspondent Leyla Santiago took to the airwaves on Friday to report on the president's rally to mark Independence Day at the memorial later in the evening, putting heavy emphasis on its links to slavery and abuses of Native Americans while implying the site was chosen for those reasons.

"Kicking off the Independence Day weekend, President Trump will be at Mt. Rushmore, where he'll be standing in front of a monument of two slave holders and on land wrestled away from Native Americans," she said, noting Trump would focus on what he called "the effort to tear down our country's history."

As the US election looms, the gun-toting III% Security Force stands ready for an anti-Democrat uprising. The group has been accused of neo-Nazism, but one of its leaders tells RT they merely protect the will of the people.
"There is a coup taking place right now, there's a collective effort to overthrow our way of life as we know it - people are starting to realize it's not a conspiracy theory. If we don't come together as one, we'll be living in a post-American world by 2021."
That's the view of Chris Hill, commanding officer of the III% Security Force's Georgia branch. The Three Percenters are a constitutional militia with chapters across the US, their name originating from claims that only three percent of colonists took up arms against Britain in the American revolution.

According to them, over the last few months membership has rocketed by 150 percent, with 50 to 100 applicants per day - spurred on by developments like Minneapolis City's pledge to dismantle their police department and Joe Biden's promise to stand up for Muslim communities if he enters the White House.

Hill, also known as General BloodAgent, said:
"It's like our Founding Fathers stated, we believe we should come together, to lend our arms and council whenever a crisis arises.

"We advocate and defend our goals and beliefs with regards to our way of life, our constitution from all enemies foreign and domestic."

Comment: Whether right or wrong, Hill and his organization have a right to express a viewpoint that may not be far off the mark. No one knows how the 'current state of disfunction' will resolve - but so far, the choices aren't all that great.

Jeffrey Epstein's former mentor claimed Ghislaine Maxwell will fully cooperate with the feds after being busted on charges that she groomed underage women to have sex with the infamous pedophile, according to a report.

Steven Hoffenberg, 75, who spent 18 years behind bars for a Ponzi scheme that he has claimed Epstein was part of, told the UK's Sun that Maxwell will "totally cooperate," adding that Prince Andrew "may be very concerned."

"There's a lot of people very worried, a lot of powerful people been named [in the scandal], and she knows everything," Hoffenberg told the outlet about Maxwell.

Investigators who busted Maxwell, Epstein's alleged procuress, confirmed Thursday that they still want to talk to the prince — as lawyers predict his socialite pal could turn against him.

Comment: Unfortunately, despite all the hoopla, only the small fish will be caught in the dragnet. The real culprits Epstein and Maxwell fronted for slithered away ages ago.

A woman who claims Ghislaine Maxwell raped her dozens of times - beginning when she was just 14 years old - says she is willing to take the stand and testify against Jeffrey Epstein's ex-girlfriend.

In an exclusive interview with Fox News, Jane Doe, who wishes to protect her identity, said Maxwell sexually abused her beginning in 1991 in Florida. She said the abuse continued until she was 16.

Maxwell was arrested Thursday on federal charges for facilitating and participating in sexual abuse acts with minors,

"She did rape me. I would say it's more than 20 or 30 times," she said. "She is just as evil as Jeffrey Epstein ... She is a rapist."

Jane Doe claims years of sexual abuse came to an end only after she became pregnant with Jeffrey Epstein's baby. At age 16, she had an abortion.

"I had never been with anyone except for him [Epstein]," said Doe, who is part of a lawsuit filed against Epstein's estate over a year ago. "The fact that I had to kill my child really affected me and my family."

Suspecting that she had told her grandparents about the abortion, and fearful she would talk to authorities, Doe says, Maxwell, Epstein and others gang-raped her one last time as punishment. "Ghislaine was a part of it," Doe said. "I was drugged."

After the rape, Doe said, a driver with a gun drove her to her home. "I was dumped off in my grandparents yard naked, and was told that I wouldn't come back alive the next time," Doe said.

Covid-19 quarantine has exposed youngsters to severe abuse, neglect and isolation. As horrifying reports start to emerge, we need to do better to help protect society's most vulnerable.

Despite the fact that, as it stands, Covid-19 is thankfully not providing an overwhelming threat to children's health globally, they are suffering in other ways. They're not allowed to go to school, attend camps, visit sports grounds or meet friends, meaning a gaping hole exists in which important milestones and rites of passage were missed and will never be experienced again.

For many children, it's been boring, frustrating and sometimes depressing. However, for others, it's been deadly, because the coronavirus lockdown has seen them fall prey to a wave of increased domestic abuse.

The Archives of Disease in Childhood, an international journal that informs pediatricians and doctors about advocacy issues such as child protection, disease diagnosis and treatment of childhood diseases, has reported a surge in domestic child abuse during the pandemic.

In surveying just one institution, London's Great Ormond Street children's hospital, over a period of just one month, it found a surge in new admissions of badly abused babies. Such cases have risen from an average of 0.67 in 2017, 2018, and 2019 to 10 cases in 2020 - an increase of 1,493 percent.

Comment: Amazing Polly presents an interesting angle on the coronavirus plandemic in the form of a question: Does our government's handling of the coronavirus constitute torture? Here she presents a compelling case that the measures and guidelines (at this point reaching absurd levels) foisted on the general public contain within them many (if not all) elements of torture as described by Amnesty International's report.

When we factor in ponerology and the fact that the controlling elite are looking for total and complete control of the population, the use of psychological and physical torture on the public to increase compliance is certainly an appealing methodology for them to use.

In this video, I want to ask the audience a question. It's a serious question and I'll go through the evidence of why I'm asking it in a minute. The question is this: does the handling of this virus amount to torture? On the face of it, it might seem like a ridiculous question and I can already hear the objections to it. But I'm going to take you through evidence from an Amnesty International report from 1975, where they took a deep look at torture, what constitutes it, what it does to people and what methods actual torturers have used in this thing called "no touch torture". It's psychological torture, it's mental torture. By the end of this I hope that you will see that the question doesn't have an easy answer.

In fact, I think you will come to the conclusion that, yes, indeed, the responses to this coronavirus in many regions of the world do in fact amount to torture. I'm going to also talk about why they would want to do this very briefly, at the end.

Let's begin by looking at excerpts from this 1975 Amnesty International report on torture. I want to take you to page 34, where they are going through the four elements of torture. They say that at least two persons must be involved, the torturer and a victim or victims, and that the victim is under the physical control of the torturer. They move to the second element, which is "the basic one of the infliction of acute pain and suffering". They specify in this paragraph that:
Definitions that would limit torture to physical assaults on the body exclude 'mental' and 'psychological' torture which undeniably causes acute pain and suffering, and must be incorporated in any definition.
