Best of the Web: Korybko: Is West Africa gearing up for a regional war?

west africa
The latest events don't inspire confidence that a wider war in West Africa can be averted, which is why everyone should brace themselves for one breaking out sometime later this month. If NATO-backed and Nigerian-led ECOWAS doesn't swiftly defeat the newly formed Sahelian Coalition of Burkina Faso, Mali, and Niger (with Guinea possibly joining them in some capacity), then Russia is expected to tangibly support the latter, thus leading to a New Cold War proxy conflict in which Chad could be the kingmaker.

Last week's patriotic military coup in Niger, which was carried out in response to the prior regime's failure to ensure its citizens' security in the face of rising terrorist threats, is quickly turning into the catalyst for what could soon become a regional war in West Africa. Countries are taking sides ahead of the Economic Community Of West African States' (ECOWAS) ultimatum expiring this Sunday to reinstall ousted President Mohamed Bazoum or face what's likely to be a French-backed Nigerian-led invasion.

'An illusion': French minister rejects 'decoupling from Beijing' strategy, instead wants more access to trade with China

Le Maire
© Ting Shen/BloombergEconomy Minister Bruno Le Maire says it would be impossible to cut off the country from the Chinese market
French Economy Minister Bruno Le Maire has dismissed calls for his country to "decouple" from Beijing due to security concerns. He instead reiterated on Sunday that Paris wants better access to the Chinese market and better trade relations with the country.

"We are totally opposed to the idea of decoupling. Decoupling is an illusion," Le Maire told reporters following negotiations with Vice Premier He Lifeng in the Chinese capital.

"There is no possibility of having any kind of decoupling between the American, European and Chinese economies," the French minister said. He added that Paris would not like to "face some legislative hurdles or some other barriers" on the path to China's large market.

Comment: Increasingly the factions within the establishment are revealing how deep their divisions are, with some driven to 'contain' China, whilst others seem to realise that such wishful thinking will only lead to their own collapse. A similar conflict of agendas can be seen in the West's war on Russia via Ukraine, with some factions seemingly wanting to cut their losses, whereas others appear pathologically driven to continue:

Climate of Fear: UN Chief Guterres warns 'era of Global Boiling' is here

U.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres
© AP Photo/Vadim GhirdaU.N. Secretary-General Antonio Guterres urges world leaders in 2022 to take “credible” new action to curb climate change, warning that efforts so far fall short of what’s needed to avert catastrophe.
Be afraid. Be very, very afraid. United Nations chief Antonio Guterres on Thursday night rolled out some of his most apocalyptic climate rhetoric to date declaring "the era of global warming has ended, the era of global boiling has arrived."

He went on to lament how "terrifying" it is seeing children "swept away by monsoon rains, families running from the flames, workers collapsing in scorching heat."

The veteran Portuguese socialist painted his picture of a world in peril during a streamed speech from U.N. headquarters in New York, returning once more to a theme of climate doom he has used almost without respite since he took office.

Comment: Whether he's lying or completely buys the hyperbolic claims he's making, Guterres should be mocked widely for this.

US General 'dies in plane crash'

Comment: A plane crash, you say? Are you sure he didn't die in Ukraine?

A U.S. general died in a plane crash near Aberdeen Proving Ground in Maryland on July 25, Defense News reported Friday.

Maj. Gen. Anthony Potts, 59, a longtime Army acquisitions officer and aviator, was the only person on board the single-engine Piper PA-28 when it went down in a field and died at the scene, Defense News reported, citing the Harford County Sheriff's Office and local media reports. Potts, who boasted nearly four decades of service and most recently led the Army's Program Executive Office Command, Control and Communications-Tactical, or PEO C3T, had planned to retire soon, according to the outlet.

"It is with deep regret that we inform you of the death of Maj. Gen. Anthony W. Potts who passed away on July 25, 2023," U.S. Army spokesperson Lt. Col. Ruth Castro confirmed in a statement to the Daily Caller News Foundation.

Ukraine using terror attacks to distract from counteroffensive failure - Moscow

Additional measures have been taken to increase protection, Russia's defense minister has said.

Ukraine's recent attacks on civilian infrastructure in Russian cities are meant to shift focus away from Kiev's failing counteroffensive, Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu suggested on Monday.
"Against the backdrop of an unsuccessful so-called 'counteroffensive', the Kiev regime, with the support of Western sponsors, has focused on carrying out terrorist attacks on civilian infrastructure in cities and towns of the Russian Federation,"
Shoigu said at a meeting of top military officials.
"Considering the current situation, additional measures have been taken to increase protection against attacks from the air and sea,"
the minister announced.
He added that the Russian military has also significantly increased the intensity of its own attacks on Ukrainian military facilities that provide support for such terrorist acts.

Ex-Hunter Biden partner Devon Archer testifies Joe Biden was on calls with foreign patrons 'for the brand'

Devon Archer

Former Hunter Biden business partner Devon Archer testified Monday to the House Oversight Committee about President Biden's role in his son's foreign dealings — detailing dozens of encounters as congressional Republicans move closer to launching an impeachment inquiry.

A source familiar with Archer's nearly four-hour closed-door interview said that Archer testified that Ukrainian natural gas company Burisma Holdings added Hunter to its board in early 2014 because of the Biden "brand" as his dad led US policy toward Ukraine.

Archer testified that Burisma owner Mykola Zlochevsky and company executive Vadym Pozharski in late 2015 put intense pressure on Hunter to enlist the US government to help oust Ukrainian prosecutor-general Viktor Shokin, who had investigated Burisma for corruption.

The former Hunter Biden partner added that he witnessed the then-second son, Zlochevsky and Pozharski step away as they "called DC" to discuss the issue.

"Biden has restored the integrity of the Department of Justice"
— Dan Goldman, Congressman from New York
Surely Merrick Garland is not running the Department of Justice, but which gloopy pseudopod of the Blob is? My guess would be some Intel Community politburo made up mostly of people you've never heard of. The trouble is these geniuses confuse political fuckery with the operations of law.

So, Saturday night when the lights were supposedly off at the DOJ, and much of America was tuned out — getting new tattoos, arguing with the re-po man, watching the Orioles — the Blob told a lawyer from the Southern District of New York, one Damian Williams, to send a letter to Federal Judge Ronnie Abrams asking her to set a date for one Devon Archer to report to prison on a bond fraud conviction that Mr. Archer is appealing on the grounds of DOJ sentencing misconduct. Like, can you hurry that up, please?

Devon Archer, you recall, was the college room-mate and later close business associate of R. Hunter Biden, First Son, who is in a bit of trouble for laundering money from foreign companies and governments through a score of shell companies that then made large payouts to Biden family members, including the so-called Big Guy currently living in the White House. Mr. Archer, who has been in hiding (wonder why?) is scheduled to be deposed by the House Oversight Committee today. It is believed that he knows a thing or two about the Biden family business doings, enough, say, to corroborate the shit-ton of documentary evidence already in the Committee's possession that lays out a pretty stark template of bribery with adumbrations of treason.

Niger suspends export of uranium and gold to France, warns ECOWAS against military intervention

Abdourahamane Tchiani
Niger coup leader General Abdourahamane Tchiani
Niger coup leader General Abdourahamane Tchiani, despite being EU's largest supplier of uranium, halts uranium and gold export to France.

With immediate effect, the Republic of Niger under the leadership of General Abdourahamane Tchiani, and supported by the people of the Republic, announced the suspension of the export of uranium and gold to France on Sunday.

In parallel to the decision, protestors were surrounding the French Embassy in Niger calling for the end of French colonial practices repeating the slogan "Down with France!" and reaffirming their support to the coup leader, Tchiani.

Comment: Tellingly, most of these coups have been condemned by the West:

Why does France, the EU and the US want to see ECOWAS arguable vassal states invade Niger to depose the military regime? France has between 1000-1500 troops in Niger The US has 1100 troops in Niger and the $110 million Agadez Air Base Italy has 300 troops in Niger Niger supplies the EU with over a fifth of its uranium and Niger's uranium is crucial for French nuclear reactors. Niger's new authorities have banned uranium exports to France. Despite Niger being used as a foreign military base and its resources robbed through neocolonial exploitation, 80% of Niger's citizens have no access to electricity and 80% live on less than $2 a day-causing popular support for the military coup.

Trump trouncing Republican presidential hopefuls: Tops 50% in new national GOP poll, up 37 points on DeSantis

trump 2024
The New York Times/Sienna College poll echoes other findings pegging Donald Trump the far and away front-runner of the 2024 GOP primary.
Former President Donald Trump remains the undisputed leader of the 2024 Republican presidential pack — holding a staggering 37 percentage-point lead over his nearest rival, Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, according to a new poll out Monday.

Trump, 77, drew 54% support among likely GOP primary voters nationwide in the New York Times/Siena College survey, followed by DeSantis at 17%.

No other Republican contender received more than 3% support — with former Vice President Mike Pence, former US Ambassador to the United Nations Nikki Haley and Sen. Tim Scott (R-SC) each reaching that figure.

Multimillionaire entrepreneur Vivek Ramaswamy and former New Jersey Gov. Chris Christie each clocked in at 2%. No other aspirant reached 1%, while 13% of respondents didn't know whom they'd back.

Comment: Poll seems accurate if judging by Trump's rally crowds:

Joe and Jill Biden finally acknowledge 7th grandchild for most obnoxious reason

Granddaughter
© TwitterNavy Joan Roberts and Mother Lunden Roberts
For her entire life, four-year-old Navy Joan Roberts has been "she who must not be named." There is no evidence that her father has ever visited her, let alone held her.

Her grandparents repeatedly denied her existence and said that they had only "four granddaughters." They even gave their dogs stockings at Christmas rather than Navy, who never even bit one let alone a score of Secret Service agents. As even Democrats began to voice their own shock at the cruelty of the First Couple shunning this child, the Bidens finally relented and recognized her existence, but only barely so.

Pressed by Fox News, the White House issued this statement:
"Our son Hunter and Navy's mother, Lunden, are working together to foster a relationship that is in the best interests of their daughter, preserving her privacy as much as possible going forward. This is not a political issue, it's a family matter. Jill and I only want what is best for all of our grandchildren, including Navy."
