US stonewalling investigation into bombing of hospital in Afghanistan

"Even war has rules," said Doctors Without Borders head Dr. Joanne Liu as part of her response to the devastating U.S. bombing of the organization's hospital in Kunduz, Afghanistan earlier this October.

After a series of different explanations and excuses — four separate accounts of the incident over the first four days, by The Guardian's count — the United States still hasn't provided a concrete explanation as to why and how the hospital was targeted, killing 22 doctors and patients. The attack was the worst on any Doctors Without Borders hospital in its 44 years of operating.

But it wasn't all that different from other recent U.S. attacks on civilian infrastructure. Since as far back as 1991, the U.S. has been "accidentally" blowing up medical and humanitarian facilities in a range of places, resulting in high civilian casualties and other "collateral damage."

To name but a few, in 1991 the U.S. targeted an air raid shelter in Baghdad, killing 408 Iraqi civilians. (A U.S. general claimed the shelter was "an active command-and-control center.") In 1998 the Clinton administration attacked the Al Shifa pharmaceutical factory in Sudan, which the U.S. claimed was associated with the bin Laden network and was "involved in the production of materials for chemical weapons." As a result, according to The Intercept, "tens of thousands of people have suffered and died" from "treatable diseases" in the country since then. In 2001, the U.S. attacked the complex that housed the International Committee of the Red Cross in Kabul — not once but twice, destroying storage warehouses that held food and supplies for refugees.

The incident in Kunduz, unfortunately, just adds to the list.

Comment: How can the US government justify bombing an independent hospital that treats victims of war on all sides? They can't, so instead they will stonewall. There is no good reason for the US to refuse an independent investigation, other than it will reveal that they knowingly bombed innocent people, in a hospital no less. The only description one can give to such behavior is evil.

Vienna talks: Politics is just another form of war against Syria

Image
Russia's military intervention in Syria is proving a decisive turning point in stabilising the government of Bashar al-Assad, while racking up serious defeats against the sundry extremist mercenary groups. That is the assessment of US top military officer General Joseph F Dunford. The Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff told the Senate Armed Services Committee this week: «The balance of forces right now are in Assad's advantage».

As the Los Angeles Times noted, Dunford's assessment «appeared to contradict upbeat assessments by the White House last month that indicated Assad's government had suffered a series of military losses and was losing control».

Meanwhile, in a hasty diplomatic foray, US Secretary of State John Kerry managed to get Washington's regional allies to attend talks in Paris and Vienna to discuss a political solution to the four-year-old Syrian conflict. Among the attendees were Britain, France, Turkey, Saudi Arabia, the United Arab Emirates. At Russia's insistence over Saudi objections, Iran was invited to the high-level discussions - the first time that Tehran has been admitted to the table.

An Associated Press report carried by the Huffington Post gave Kerry's shuttle diplomacy a positive spin, saying: «...all previous international mediation efforts have done nothing to stop the fighting, and Kerry is trying to unite all sides with influence in the Arab country around a common vision of a peaceful, secular and pluralistic Syria governed with the consent of its people».

Senate holds hearing on GMO labeling - Only hears Big Agriculture's side of the debate

Several speakers at a recent Senate hearing on labeling foods that contain Genetically Modified Organisms (GMOs) are connected to or have shown support for the Big Agriculture industry.

The hearing, titled Agriculture Biotechnology: A Look at Federal Regulation and Stakeholder Perspectives, comes in response to a bill passed by the U.S. House of Representatives in July. That bill would create a federal voluntary standard for GMO labeling and block mandatory labeling efforts by states. Known as the Safe and Accurate Food Labeling Act to supporters and the DARK (Deny Americans the Right to Know) Act by critics, the law would effectively nullify GMO labeling measures like the bill recently passed in Vermont. The Vermont law is scheduled to go into effect July 2016. Maine and Connecticut have also passed laws requiring labeling, but those measures will not go into effect until bordering states also pass legislation.

Germany at edge of anarchy and civil war due to migrant crisis

Germany now is somewhere at the edge of anarchy and sliding towards civil war, or to become a "banana republic without any government," says Hansjoerg Mueller of the Alternative for Germany party.

Bavarian official Peter Dreier called German Chancellor Angela Merkel to tell her personally that if Germany welcomes a million refugees, his town of Landshut will only take in around 1,800. Any extra will be put on buses and sent to her Chancellery in Berlin.

RT: He says he's going to send them to Berlin, but does he have the power?

Hansjoerg Mueller: The person who wants to send them to Berlin is Mr. Dreier. He is the district head of Landshut, a town close to Munich. Usually he does not have the power, but we are not living in usual times. What we are now looking at is more and more Germany sliding towards anarchy. In this situation I think less and less is determined by law, more and more is determined by who acts. And the person who acts in fact has the power. So if he sends ... refugees to Berlin, he sends them!

Comment: Since the migrant crisis is a Western-engineered event, it's certainly possible that destabilizing Germany is one of its main purposes. If that's the case, things look to be going according to plan.

Pentagon's 'prudent measure': Russian and US air forces hold joint exercises in Syria

Russian and US flight personnel carried out a joint exercise in Syrian airspace to ensure proper implementation of the deconfliction agreement, US Defense Department spokesperson Michelle Baldanza told RIA Novosti on Tuesday.

Earlier on Tuesday, Russia's General Staff said US and Russian air crews held a joint exercise in Syria establishing radio contacts and exchanging messages about parameters of their flights.
"This test was a prudent measure solely to ensure that, in the event Coalition aircraft encounter a Russian aircraft during operations in Syria, one of the established and agreed upon modes of communication in the agreement functioned," Baldanza said.
The Pentagon spokesperson said the test assured that the first communication between the US and Russian pilots would not happen during an unplanned encounter.
"The test was conducted in the skies of south central Syria and lasted about 3 minutes," Baldanza added.
In October, senior officials from the US Department of Defense and the Russian Ministry of Defense signed a memorandum of understanding to avoid mishaps during the countries' military operations in Syria.

Syrian Deputy Minister: 'Saudi officials need psychotherapy'

Syrian Deputy Economy Minister Hayan Salman
Syrian Deputy Economy Minister Hayan Salman lashed out at the Riyadh government officials for interfering in his country's internal affairs, and said that the Saudi officials have psychological problems and need intensive medical care.

"The Saudis are not living at the present time and they also want to take Syria back to the middle ages; Saudi officials need psychotherapy before advising others on what to do," Salman told FNA on Tuesday.

He said that the Al Saud family supposes that they can buy the people of the world with their petrodollars, but they have forgotten that they can only build palaces with their money and not humanity.

In September, Prominent Syrian analyst Qassem Hadraj underlined that Saudi Arabia and Qatar which still continue their financial and logistical support for the terrorists cannot take part in the international talks on Syria.

On different occasions, Saudi officials have criticized other countries for interfering in Syria's internal affairs while the Riyadh government is still supporting the Takfiri terrorists in Syria.

Comment: Psychotherapy probably won't help the Saudi regime. At least Syria recognizes what they are dealing with.

Syrian Army eliminates 7 Al-Qaeda affiliated commanders in one day

Syria conflict
The terrorist groups operating in Western Syria have taken quite a hit over the last 24 hours, as several field reports have revealed a heavy death toll among the leadership and top ranks of these groups in the provinces of Aleppo, Damascus, Lattakia, and Hama.

Sources said that the Syrian Army killed the following militant commanders in the last 24 hours: Abu Ali Al-Na'imi (Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham), Abu Mu'az Al-Shami (Al-Nusra Front), Saleh Sindah (Jeish Al-Islam), Uqaba Abu Ahmad (Liwaa 'Umar Al-Farouq), Abu Abdo Saqr (Jeish Al-Islam), Abu Ahmad Khalil (Liwaa 'Umar Al-Farouq), and Ashraf Jami'ah Al-Muhayr (Harakat Ahrar Al-Sham).

In addition to the heavy losses to their leadership, the militant groups have also sustained significant losses to their military personnel, as social media activists from militant groups like "Jeish Al-Islam" revealed images of their fighters mourning the death of 80 of their recently killed members.

Overall, in the month of October, 56 field commanders from the militant groups and the ISIL were killed by the Syrian army and/or the National Defense Forces (NDF).

Real issues that no US presidential candidate will talk about

The countdown has begun.

We now have less than one year until the 2016 presidential election, and you can expect to be treated to an earful of carefully crafted, expensive sound bites and political spin about climate change, education, immigration, taxes and war.

Despite the dire state of our nation, however, you can rest assured that none of the problems that continue to undermine our freedoms will be addressed in any credible, helpful way by any of the so-called viable presidential candidates and certainly not if doing so might jeopardize their standing with the unions, corporations or the moneyed elite bankrolling their campaigns.

The following are just a few of the issues that should be front and center in every presidential debate. That they are not is a reflection of our willingness as citizens to have our political elections reduced to little more than popularity contests that are, in the words of Shakespeare, "full of sound and fury, signifying nothing."

REAL peace-making: Putin 'forges alliances with every key player' in Mideast

Putin alliances

Russia is particularly well-positioned to bring peace to Syria and use this achievement to cement ties with all major stakeholders in the Middle East at a time when the Obama administration is "weak and passive" in the region, the Asian Times asserted.

Success in Syria, the Asian Times believes, will only be the first act in a larger strategy spanning the whole region which also involves "forging alliances with every key player in the regional arena."

Russia has already significantly improved relations with countries as diverse as Israel, Iraq, Egypt and Iran as evidenced by recent high-profile visits, fresh cooperation agreements and increased military assistance.

Comment: Putin's genius is that even though Russia's actions are currently running counter to Turkey's and the Saudi's goals, he is still talking to both countries. It's the only way to bring about a lasting resolution to the conflict. Contrast this with Washington's attitude to adversaries.

German newspaper calls out US for using oil as weapon against Russia, Iran

German newspaper Die Welt believes that the United States' decision to start selling oil from their strategic reserves amounts to a growing resource war against Russia, Saudi Arabia and Iran.

Recently, the US Congress approved a package to sell off part of their strategic oil reserves, as a means to increase the budget.

However, as a writer for Die Welt wrote, this shows Washington hiding its desire to unleash a global war on raw materials.

The US authorities have chosen to sell their oil reserves at a price that is less than half of what it was last year. In the middle of 2014 a barrel of oil cost about $ 100, while today's price does not exceed $ 50.
