The IL-76 military aircraft was transporting 65 captured service members for further exchange, the Defense Ministry has said.

A Russian heavy transport plane carrying several dozen Ukrainian prisoners of war (POWs) has crashed in Belgorod region, which borders Ukraine, Moscow has confirmed. Earlier, media reports suggested that all passengers and crew members on board were killed.

In a statement on Wednesday, the Russian Defense Ministry said that an IL-76 cargo aircraft carrying 65 captured Ukrainian service members as well as six crew members and three people accompanying the POWs went down during a pre-planned flight at around 11am local time. It added that the prisoners were being transported to Belgorod region for an exchange.

CIA officials implicated in secret plot to 'get rid' of President Donald Trump

In January 2017, an "all-hands" National Security Council staff meeting was convened for the explicit purpose of scheming to "get rid" of then-President Trump.

Donald Trump, the duly elected president, was already in the midst of a Russia collusion hoax accusing him of high treason, which was orchestrated by defeated Democratic presidential candidate Hillary Clinton and the Democratic National Committee.

Trump's political opponents weaponized the false accusation of Russian collusion using Russian disinformation in the Steele dossier. This had led to 2016 Trump campaign surveillance and the undermining of his first presidential term with the ensuing Mueller investigation. It was the consummate act of "election interference."

Comment: That the CIA was complicit in many targetted campaigns to 'get rid of' Trump is basically common knowledge at this point. But getting the receipts is important, even if the high-level instigators may remain untouched. If Trump ever does have the opportunity to 'drain the swamp,' he should start by dissolving the CIA.

Canadian federal court finds invoking Emergencies Act for 'Freedom Convoy' violated Charter

The Federal Court has ruled the Trudeau government's decision to invoke the Emergencies Act during the so-called "Freedom Convoy" that descended on Ottawa in 2022 violated the Charter of Rights and Freedoms.

In his ruling, Justice Richard G. Mosley said the move was "unreasonable" and outside the scope of the law. Mosley is a 21-year veteran of the Federal Court and is a respected voice on national security legal matters. He has weighed in on some of the most high-profile recent cases in Canadian intelligence, including a 2016 decision that found CSIS had been illegally storing Canadians' communication data for more than a decade.

The case was brought forward by the Canadian Civil Liberties Association (CCLA), the Canadian Constitution Foundation, Canadian Frontline Nurses and a handful of individuals.

Comment: Trudeau Sr.'s failure to cancel the War Measures Act is the gift that just keeps on giving. One could even say Canada's over-the-top reaction to its citizens' political grievances provided the model for the U.S.' answer to the Jan. 6 protests. It followed nearly point for point.

Best of the Web: Is Kim Jong Un preparing for war?

KimJ
© abnews.go.comNorth Korean leader Kim Jong Un
The situation on the Korean Peninsula is more dangerous than it has been at any time since early June 1950. That may sound overly dramatic, but we believe that, like his grandfather in 1950, Kim Jong Un has made a strategic decision to go to war. We do not know when or how Kim plans to pull the trigger, but the danger is already far beyond the routine warnings in Washington, Seoul and Tokyo about Pyongyang's "provocations." In other words, we do not see the war preparation themes in North Korean media appearing since the beginning of last year as typical bluster from the Democratic People's Republic of Korea (DPRK or North Korea).

Raising the specter of Pyongyang's decision to go to a military solution — in effect, to give warning of war — in the absence of "hard" evidence is fraught. Typically, it will be met with the by-now routine argument that Kim Jong Un would not dare take such a step because he "knows" Washington and Seoul would destroy his regime if he does so. If this is what policymakers are thinking, it is the result of a fundamental misreading of Kim's view of history and a grievous failure of imagination that could be leading (on both Kim's and Washington's parts) to a disaster.

Comment: The authors are well-qualified to put forth these assessments.

Putin and Xi 'love their countries' - Trump

Former US President Donald Trump has described Russian President Vladimir Putin and Chinese President Xi Jinping as "very intelligent men" who "love their country." Trump frequently praises the two leaders, and insists that he is the only presidential candidate capable of standing toe-to-toe with them.

Speaking to Fox News on Monday, Trump said that Putin and Xi "whether you like it or not [are] very intelligent men, very powerful men, and very vicious men too."

"They love their country more" than US President Joe Biden does, Trump continued, adding that the 81-year-old Democrat is "not capable" of negotiating with either.

Trump told the conservative network:
"We have a man as our president who is grossly incompetent. He can't put two sentences together, he can't walk off the stage, he can't find the stairs... he's destroying this country."
Trump took a hard stance toward China while in office, but spoke warmly of Xi once Washington and Beijing struck a tentative trade deal in 2020. Trump met with Putin in Helsinki in 2018, and again at the following year's G20 summit in Osaka, but his efforts to build what he called a "very good relationship" with the Russian president were stymied by the so-called 'Russiagate' investigation, which after two years failed to turn up any evidence of "Russian meddling" in the 2016 US presidential election or "collusion" between the Trump campaign and Moscow.

Comment: Nerve? Bravado? Maybe a little of both. Someone has to move the set point. It isn't Biden.

US sees Ukraine as a 'business project' - Lavrov

Lav and other

Washington is using the conflict between Moscow and Kiev to generate profit for its companies, the Russian foreign minister has said...

Recent statements from the US suggest it regards Ukraine as nothing but a "lucrative business project," one that it is profiting from, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov told the UN Security Council on Monday.

The minister was referring to earlier statements made by US State Secretary Antony Blinken. Last month, the top US diplomat claimed that 90% of the money allocated for Ukrainian aid ends up getting funneled back to the US "to the benefit of American business, local communities, and strengthening the US defense industrial base."

In November 2023, the Washington Post also reported that the majority of these funds were spent on manufacturing new weapons or replacing the equipment sent to Ukraine out of American stockpiles.

The US is essentially "developing its military industrial" complex while "dumping the old junk in Ukraine," Lavrov said. Russia's top diplomat also claimed that most major Ukrainian companies, including lithium producers, are being sold to Americans and US companies have been able to get their hands on Ukraine's fertile land "on the cheap."

Comment: What Blinken tells the US public is no more true than what he tells Russia. It is all perception management.

Best of the Web: War on Yemen? The US better not expect a cakewalk

demonstration support gaza houthis

On Wednesday, the Biden administration labeled the Houthis a "Specially Designated Global Terrorist group," opening the door to the imposition of sweeping sanctions. Aid groups immediately responded with warnings that the designation threatens to greatly intensify Yemen's humanitarian crisis. As a result of the almost decade-long war the Saudi regime has waged on Yemen with US arms and logistical support, more than half of the country's population — over 18 million people — need food and other assistance..."US Imperialism Setting Middle East Ablaze", World Socialist Web Site
The Biden administration is in the process of reimposing the 7 year-long embargo on Yemen that cut off food, water and essential medical supplies to the civilian population. This is how Washington weaponizes the "terrorist" designation in order to use famine as an instrument of foreign policy. The clear intention is to starve the population into submission so the US can advance its geopolitical agenda in the region. In this case, Washington's strategic objectives remain largely concealed from the general public, so we will list them here:

The United States has three main goals in Yemen:
  1. To eliminate an ally of Iran. (The Houthis)
  2. To control critical shipping lanes in the Red Sea.
  3. To construct an oil pipeline across Yemen in the event that the US launches a war on Iran and shipping in the Strait of Hormuz is disrupted. Now that Israel is moving ahead with its ethnic cleansing operation, we can add a forth objective to the list:
  4. To militarily engage any army or militia in the region that tries to derail Tel Aviv's territorial ambitions.

EU foreign policy chief, Borrell, realizes that Gaza strikes are 'seeding hate'

Gaza killed
EU foreign policy chief Josep Borrell has said Israel's bombardment of Gaza will fuel hatred among Palestinians "for generations," urging the country to wind down its military campaign and find a peaceful path to a two-state solution.

Speaking ahead of an EU Foreign Affairs Council meeting on Monday, Borrell said he would engage Israel's delegation about a "comprehensive approach" to peace, including both an end to the conflict, as well as longer-term issues regarding Palestinian statehood.

"What we want to do is to build a two-state solution, so let's talk about it. The way you are naming it is important. So, from now on, I will not talk about the peace process, but about the two-state solution process," he said. "If we are serious about that, we have to study the underlying causes that prevent this solution from being implemented. Certainly, Hamas is one of them - an important one - but there are others."

The diplomat lamented the dire conditions in the Palestinian enclave, saying the "humanitarian situation could not be worse" while noting the rapidly climbing death toll among women and children.

Asked about the Israeli government's current opposition to the creation of a Palestinian state - as was recently reiterated by Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu - Borrell said further negotiations were needed, also warning of the consequences should the issue not be resolved.

Comment: The EU is coming very late to the realisation that the genocide needs to stop and Borrell does not even appear to represent a majority in the EU leadership. One could almost think that perhaps Borrell is thinking of retiring and thus feels free to say things which otherwise is hard to say due to the influence of the Israeli lobby.

What Israel has in mind as an alternative to a two state solution appears to be outright elimination of all things Palestinian and thus claim the land of Gaza as belonging to Israeli settlers. A drawback from that genocidal plan is that Israelis are fleeing Israel on masse as the security of the place is very precarious and will be for generations as Borrell says above. Hatred has been sown by Israel and that will be what it will harvest.

Lebanon FM: Russia should be involved in forging Middle East peace

Beirut's foreign minister has said he is confident Moscow will work towards easing tensions in the region

Lebanon hopes that Moscow will play an important role in resolving the current tensions in the Middle East, Foreign Minister Abdallah Bou Habib said after a meeting with his Russian counterpart, Sergey Lavrov, at the UN headquarters in New York on Monday.

Lavrov stressed during talks with Bou Habib that the involvement of other countries, including Lebanon, in the ongoing fighting between Israeli forces and Palestinian armed group Hamas was "unacceptable," according to the Russian Foreign Ministry press service. He further called for "an immediate ceasefire" in Gaza, stating that the humanitarian crisis in the enclave must be addressed urgently.

The Russian diplomat also assured his counterpart of Moscow's commitment to Lebanon's sovereignty and territorial integrity, the ministry added.

Comment: Over the years Lebanon has seen how Russia defended Syrian sovereignty and its own. They understand that, unlike the West, Russia will keep its promises of support. Moscow is the only mediator it will trust.

Finally: Africa needs permanent seat on Security Council says UN chief

UN chief Guterres
The fact that Africa lacks a permanent seat at the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) is an injustice, Secretary-General Antonio Guterres said on Sunday.

The UN chief insisted that the present structure of the UNSC is paralyzed by geopolitical divisions and does not reflect the reality of today's world. The Security Council has 15 members, five of which are permanent - Russia, China, the US, UK, and France - and which have the right to veto any resolution.

Guterres made the remarks during an engagement with reporters after addressing the Third South Summit of a group of developing countries known as the G77 plus China in Uganda's capital, Kampala.

He said that while most African countries were not independent when UN institutions were established, the fact that the continent does not have a single permanent member of the Security Council constitutes a "flagrant injustice."

Comment: The UN chief is coming a bit late to that realization that the UNSC doesn't represent the current world. Something which the BRICS countries have called for and especially Russia has been very vocal about the need for reforms in the UN.

Comment: A multipolar world is coming whether the 'Garden' states aka the 'golden billion' want it or not.
