Guantanamo Bay study reveals US' gross miscarriages of justice to warrant detentions

A study by Afghan-based research group came to troubling conclusions regarding the US government's handling of Guantanamo Bay, finding it used bad intelligence and rigged its own legal system to justify detentions, thus prolonging the Afghan war.

The author of the study by the Afghan Analysts Network says systemic ignorance of reality by both intelligence and military, as well as attempts to justify the War on Terror by any means necessary, have created a mechanism that only prolonged the conflict - America's longest in history - and strengthened the Taliban insurgency.

Author Kate Clark delves deep into the case of eight remaining Afghans at Guantanamo. Their varying stories are used as case studies for how badly things can go wrong if bad intelligence is being upheld by a rigged justice system. The eight are the longest-serving inmates, all of whom are either still at Guantanamo, or have been transferred to UAE facilities. Of the eight, six were captured in the early days of groundless arbitrary detentions. The report, based on a wealth of documents and testimony, found that the "in none of the eight cases" has the US military "been able to substantiate its accusations." Moreover, the special boards set up to ensure only enemy combatants were detained, failed in the basic task of clearing out "obvious, multiple mistakes" from detainee files - something that all but ensured wrongful detention.

And finally, it was found that the faltering justice mechanism was unwilling to stand up to the executive: "they have failed to question what the government has asserted or protect individuals from the arbitrary power of the state," Clark writes. "Reading through the United States military and court documents outlining the allegations and evidence against these eight men, one enters a Kafkaesque world of strange, vague accusations, rife with hearsay, secret evidence, bad translations, gross errors of fact and testimony obtained under duress and torture," she recounts.

Comment: Independent validation of the Guantanamo Bay travesty, the frightening state of US illegal power to ignore, abuse and fabricate its justifications, has managed to continue without proper examination, rectification or prosecution for those who should be held responsible. Shame on the US and shame on its justice system. The ends do not justify the means.

Squeeze play: US aircraft to block ISIL militants' escape from Mosul

The U.S.-led coalition has developed plans to target Islamic State militants from the air if they attempt to escape the Iraqi city of Mosul and head west toward Syria, as Iraqi ground forces close in on the city from several sides, a top U.S. general said Monday. "This is all about getting after (the Islamic State) and setting up an opportunity where, should they try to escape, we have a built-in mechanism to kill them as they are departing," said Lt. Gen. Jeffrey Harrigian, commander of U.S. air forces in the Middle East.

Blocking militants from escaping has been a key challenge as U.S.-backed Iraqi and Syrian ground forces have retaken towns and cities from the Islamic State. Hundreds of militants have managed to slip away.

The Pentagon has acknowledged there is no simple solution to prevent militants from grabbing civilian hostages or simply escaping in small numbers. But the coalition is beefing up surveillance, and Iraq's government is encouraging civilians to stay put and avoid trying to flee, lessening the likelihood they will be grabbed as human shields.

Islamic State fighters have typically attempted to inflict heavy casualties on Iraqi and Syrian opposition forces before abandoning their positions and escaping.

In the Mosul campaign, Harrigian said military planners are focused on the western approaches of the city, which are not as well defended as the other sides. He spoke to USA TODAY in a telephone interview from his headquarters in Qatar. "We're very much focused there," Harrigian said of the western routes. "Should they come out that direction, we're prepared to get after them."

The western approaches are not completely open. Shiite militias are moving into positions there and have said they will drive the Islamic State from Tal Afar, a town west of Mosul on the road to Raqqa, Syria, the de facto capital for the militant group. The militias could act as a screening force to capture the Islamic State fighters if they attempt to head toward Raqqa.

Israeli bill proposes stripping EU diplomats of immunity for helping Palestinians build homes in West Bank

European Union diplomats should be stripped of immunity for supporting the construction of houses for Palestinians in the disputed West Bank, according to new legislation proposed by a member of the Israeli Parliament.

The bill was presented on Wednesday by Oded Forer, a member of the Knesset (Israeli Parliament) for Yisrael Beiteinu, a right-wing nationalist party.

The proposed legislation says EU diplomats should be stripped of immunity if they help Palestinians build homes illegally in Area C of the West Bank. It is not yet clear what the measure would actually mean for EU diplomats, however.

Area C is an administrative division in the West Bank that comprises about 60 percent of its territory. According to information from the Israeli media, it was home to some 150,000-300,000 Palestinians and 380,000 Israelis in 2015. It is this area where the Jewish settlements, which are illegal under international law, are located.

The European Union doesn't recognize the legality of Israel's settlements in the West Bank and helps build shelters for Palestinians there. Such houses are easily recognized, as they are all labeled with the EU flag.

Russia just received the tools to neutralize NATO reconnaissance planes in Syria

Last week, NATO announced that it had begun tracking the movement of Russian military aircraft operating in Syria using AWACS reconnaissance planes operating from Turkish bases. But as luck would have it, Russia has just received all the tools it needs to neutralize the alliance's snooping.

In late September, NATO announced that a fleet of 16 Airborne Early Warning and Control Systems (AWACS) aircraft would be sent to Turkey, ostensibly to help the alliance's ongoing efforts against the Daesh (ISIS/ISIL) terrorists. A month later, the alliance confirmed that the aircraft had been deployed, and that they started their surveillance of Syrian airspace beginning October 20.

Iranian leader on refusing talks with Washington: "US is liar, cheater and stabber in the back"

Iran's supreme leader reiterated his call to mistrust the US, saying talks with Washington would be futile as it is in deep crisis now and cannot solve other nations' problems. It comes as Tehran marks the anniversary of the US Embassy siege in 1979.

"Negotiations with the US will not resolve our problems, because firstly, it is a liar, disloyal, cheater and stabber in the back, and secondly, the US itself is crisis-stricken - and how can a crisis-hit country resolve another country's problems?" Ayatollah Seyed Ali Khamenei said in Tehran on Wednesday, addressing a large gathering of Iranian school students and teachers.

The speech was dedicated to Students Day, when Iran marks the beginning of a 444-day hostage situation at the US Embassy in Tehran. On November 4, 1979, amid the Islamic Revolution, Iranian students broke into the diplomatic mission and took 52 American citizens hostage. The anniversary is marked on November 3 this year because the country observes an Islamic calendar.

Khamenei is a known skeptic toward possible rapprochement with the US, regularly criticizing Washington for not delivering on its promises. In his latest speech, he said the tenor of the presidential campaign in America indicated its moral bankruptcy and a general crisis of leadership.

Shiite militia commander: US striking jihadists in Iraq to promote national interests

The United States has been launching airstrikes on Islamic State (ISIL or Daesh) in Iraq to promote national interests, a commander of a Shiite militia fighting near Mosul told Sputnik on Thursday.

"The US does only what is in its interests ... Whatever strikes it is launching against Daesh, it is doing this for its own sake," Irfan Abdulselam Muhammed, a Turkmen commander of the Hashdi al-Shabi militia group, said.

Irfan Muhammed's group are part of an Iraqi force of some 50,000 fighters engaged in an operation to recapture the northern city of Mosul from Daesh jihadists. He said the US had not provided his militiamen with arms or training.

Turkmen fighters have retaken many villages around the city of Tal Afar, which sits on a strategic route between Mosul and Syria's Raqqa, an Daesh stronghold. Irfan Muhammed said they were preparing to lay siege to the center of Tal Afar to shut down the route and prevent Islamists from fleeing to Syria.

Wall Street and the Pentagon's political and military debacles

Washington wall street

Wall Street and the Pentagon greeted the onset of 2016 as a 'banner year', a glorious turning point in the quest for malleable regimes willing to sell-off the most lucrative economic resources, to sign off on onerous new debt to Wall Street and to grant use of their strategic military bases to the Pentagon.

Brazil and Argentina, the most powerful and richest countries in South America and the Philippines, Washington's most strategic military platform in Southeast Asia, were the objects of intense US political operations in the run-up to 2016.

In each instance, Wall Street and the Pentagon secured smashing successes leading to premature ejaculations over the 'new golden era' of financial pillage and unfettered military adventures. Unfortunately, the early ecstasy has turned to agony: Wall Street made easy entries and even faster departures once the 'honeymoon' gave way to reality. The political procurers persecuted center-left incumbents but, were soon to have their turn facing prosecution. The political prostitutes, who had decreed the sale of sovereignty, were replaced by nationalists who would turn the bordello back into a sovereign nation state.

This essay outlines the rapid rise and dramatic demise of these erstwhile 'progeny' of Wall Street and the Pentagon in Argentina and Brazil, and then reviews Washington's shock and awe as the newly elected Philippines President Rodrigo Duterte embraced new ties with China while proclaiming, 'We are no one's 'tuta' (puppy dog)!'

Comment: If it is the goal of Wall Street and the Pentagon to subvert democracy, propagate suffering, and instill chaos within all the countries they seek to influence, they are doing remarkably well. And here's another to add to the list; Venezuela - by any means possible.

Evil witch Madeleine Albright compares RT and Sputnik to Daesh propaganda

Former US Secretary of State Madeleine Albright in an article published Thursday proposed taking on what she said was "anti-democratic trolling" by Russian media, such as the RT broadcaster and Sputnik news agency, the same way Washington dealt with Islamist propaganda.

"We already have systems in place to monitor Islamic State propaganda on the Internet, and we should do the same for authoritarian propaganda," she wrote in an article for the USA Today.

Comment: She's right, there should be a system to monitor authoritarian propaganda. If such a system did exist, it would have to flag everything she is saying as authoritarian propaganda otherwise it would be a faulty system. The irony is that Western media is by far the biggest propaganda outlet in the world, spouting whatever lie the US government wishes to spread without a discerning thought.

Albright reiterated accusations by US homeland security and intelligence that the Russian government was behind the sensitive leaks from the Democratic National Committee email accounts, published by WikiLeaks, claiming the website was friends with Russian officials.

Comment: Yet no one in the US intelligence community has provided any evidence of Russian involvement in the Podesta leaks. In fact, the FBI itself refused to name Russia as being responsible for the hacks, just as it also found no evidence of any connections between Trump and Putin. Albright may want to start paying attention to what her own country's top law enforcement authority is saying before she makes herself sound foolish (too late!).

News outlets like the RT channel and Sputnik agency are spreading misinformation and lies, she said, and the United States must tell the true story, specifically to audiences in Central and Eastern Europe.

"The U.S. government should work with technology companies to develop better policies to deal with anti-democratic trolling, as they have done with cyberbullying, hate speech and violent extremism," the top US diplomat under Bill Clinton wrote.

The Clinton campaign has blamed Russia for directing leaks of emails from the hacked account of US Democratic nominee Hillary Clinton's election campaign chairman, John Podesta, in a bid to interfere with the US election process. Russia has denied the allegations.

"Look to Washington, not Moscow': Former British ambassador claims leaked DNC emails came from a D.C. insider

DNC email leak
With the media gripped by accusatory speculation regarding the identity of the source behind the Wikileaks leak of hacked Podesta and DNC emails, much of it focused on Russia, a new theory has emerged from Craig Murray, the former British ambassador to Uzbekistan, who tells Sputnik (a Russian media outlet) that the source of the leaks are not Russian hackers but a Washington insider.

"The source of these emails and leaks has nothing to do with Russia at all. I discovered what the source was when I attended the Sam Adam's whistleblower award in Washington. The source of these emails comes from within official circles in Washington DC. You should look to Washington not to Moscow."

Asked about whether or not WikiLeaks have ever published information at the behest of Moscow, Murray said that "WikiLeaks has never published any material received from the Russian government or from any proxy of the Russian government. It's simply a completely untrue claim designed to divert attention from the content of the material."
