Israeli police to interrogate Netanyahu on at least two 'abuse of power' charges

Netanyahu
Police investigators are poised to grill Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu about two scandals threatening to remove the veteran leader from office.

Netanyahu will reportedly speak with the police on four occasions following the end of High Holy Days - roughly mid-October - the Jerusalem Post reported Wednesday. There have been reports that the Israeli attorney general has formally indicted Bibi but these have yet to be confirmed.

Responding to the news, former Israeli PM Ehud Barak tweeted "Bibi will have to leave Balfour," the prime minister's residence, adding, "it is a shame that it happens this way."

Netanyahu stands accused of two major charges that he abused the power of office.

President Donald Trump took up the issue of the Iran nuclear deal during a meeting with senior US military officials at the White House Thursday evening. According to the president, Iran has not lived up to the "spirit" of the international agreement.

Trump sat beside his chief of staff, John Kelly, and Defense Secretary James Mattis, both former Marine Corps generals, along with a group of senior US military officials Thursday night, where the president told reporters that "We must not allow Iran to obtain nuclear weapons."

Iran, he said, has not "lived within the spirit of the deal."

While maintaining the most powerful armed forces in the world, the United States military is struggling to deal with shortages, out-of-date equipment and personnel issues, according to a new report by a conservative think tank.

In its 2018 Index of US Military Strength, the Heritage Foundation warned that "informed deliberations on the status of the United States' military power are desperately needed" and that the world faces a "significantly weaker America."

The report graded aspects of the Army, Navy, Air Force, Marines and nuclear weapons capabilities on a five-point scale between "Very Weak" and "Very Strong," gauging the overall ability of the military to fight two capable foes simultaneously as "marginal." Along the way, the report pointed out several aspects in which the armed forces were lacking.

Trump demands Senate probe America's 'Fake News Networks'

While the Senate Intelligence Committee is investigating Russia's alleged meddling in the 2016 US election, President Donald Trump has urged the body to look into American media to see why "so much of our news is just made up-FAKE!"

"Why Isn't the Senate Intel Committee looking into the Fake News Networks in OUR country to see why so much of our news is just made up-FAKE!" Trump tweeted Thursday morning, the day after the Senate Intelligence Committee updated reporters about its months-long investigation into Russia's alleged interference in the US election.

Some news outlets will be left "with egg on their face" over their reporting on the Russia investigation, committee chairman Richard Burr (R-North Carolina) told CNN when asked about Trump's statement.

Washington has already lost their cold war against Iran

Iran
"Authority and authoritarian powers seek to collapse the values, the systems, and alliances that prevented conflict and tilted the world toward freedom since World War II." clamored one boastful US President Donald Trump as he took the floor of the UN General Assembly.

While many will disagree as to which, or better yet, whose powers stand guilty as charged, Mr. Trump does in fact make a point ... he would of course need to point the finger at his own navel for accuracy, but for once few will disagree with his statement.

Others, braver than me perhaps, could also remark that not much has changed since WWII, except maybe our collective ability to slap a nice veneer of democratic legitimacy over the most obscene of human rights violations. America's counter-terrorism campaign comes to mind ... but that is a discussion I'd like to reserve for some other time.

EU orders Amazon to pay back €250m from illegal tax benefits

The European Union has ordered Amazon to pay back about €250m (£221m) in taxes stemming from an unfair tax break the company was given by Luxembourg in 2003.

"Luxembourg gave illegal tax benefits to Amazon. As a result, almost three quarters of Amazon's profits were not taxed," European Competition Commissioner Margrethe Vestager said in a statement.

"In other words, Amazon was allowed to pay four times less tax than other local companies subject to the same national tax rules. This is illegal under EU state aid rules. Member states cannot give selective tax benefits to multinational groups that are not available to others," she added.

Russia warns of "severe consequences" after US repeatedly shows signs of cooperating with terrorists in Syria

The Syrian Army was on its way across the Euphrates river to liberate the oil- and gas-fields east of Deir Ezzor city. The U.S. countered the move. It sent a small forces of Arab tribal mercenaries who were earlier allied with the Islamic State (ISIS). These proxy forces came from a northern direction and moved through Islamic State held areas without fighting and casualties up to the walls of Deir Ezzor city.

The Syrian army was about to win the race when it started to cross the Euphrates. But it suddenly was surprised by a large al-Qaeda attack in southern Idleb province. That area had been quiet for months. 29 Russian troops who were supervising a deescalation zone there were nearly encircled by al-Qaeda forces. They only escape after an emergency relief operation had cut through al-Qaeda lines. The Russian Ministry of Defense accused the U.S. of having communicated the position of the Russian platoon to al-Qaeda.

Comment: Russia may have to 'order harsh retaliation', but it is very unlikely to come through direct military conflict with the United States. Russia is too clever for that, and they understand that there are more options on the table than military measures alone.

IRS awards no-bid contract to disgraced Equifax in midst of hack scandal

equifax
Just hours after Equifax CEO Rick Smith wrapped up his testimony before the House Energy and Commerce committee - the first in a series of Congressional "fact-finding missions" about the hack - Politico reported that the IRS last week awarded the disgraced credit monitoring bureau with a $7.25 million no-bid contract even as the company struggled to address suspicions that it misled investors and customers by withholding information about one of the most damaging data breaches in US history.

Equifax famously waited more than a month to disclose that hackers had infiltrated its servers and absconded with the sensitive financial information of more than 140 million customers, sparking widespread outrage that only intensified after reporters discovered that several of the company's senior executives - including its CFO - cashed out of shares and options in the weeks before the company came clean about the hack.

According to the terms of the IRS contract, Equifax would be responsible for verifying taxpayer identities and help prevent fraud under a no-bid contract issued last week.

Russiagate hysteria continues: Google cuts RT from premium ad service without prior notice

The move by Google to expunge RT from its premium advertising service without any prior notice is "absolutely unacceptable" but will not have an adverse effect on the channel's outreach or its profits, RT Deputy Editor-in-Chief Kirill Karnovich-Valua said.

RT, with millions of subscribers across its channels, has for years been ahead of the competition as the most viewed TV news network on YouTube, setting several records since it registered on the platform in 2007. Last month, the RT network hit another milestone after its multi-language videos were watched over 5 billion times.

RT Deputy Editor-in-Chief Kirill Karnovich-Valua expressed regret over the lack of communication from Google, which failed to properly notify RT of this important update.

"RT has been Google's premium partner since 2010 and accredited to an official status of the most watched TV news network on YouTube. The fact that RT is no longer included in the Google Preferred advertising list in the US in itself does not affect RT distribution and monetization on the platform.

Comment: These people don't seem to realize that the more they try to shut down RT, the more popular they will get. Call it the blindness of the censor. Thankfully, these heavy-handed tactics will only push more people to see what all the fuss is about. Then they'll realize their so-called leaders are idiots. And that is why RT must be shut down. Rinse and repeat.

The Occupation of the American Mind: Documentary exposes how Israel interferes in American politics (VIDEO)

"This is a film that demands to be seen. It shows, with devastating precision, how effective propaganda can hide crimes that are epic in scale and have catastrophic consequences. Please see this film, hire it, screen it, talk about it." - Ken Loach

Comment: Narrated by Roger Waters, this one is a must-watch. Trigger alert: prepare to be deeply offended.
