Maduro: Russia would back Venezuela against the US

During a visit to Moscow, Venezuelan President Nicolas Maduro said Wednesday that he was confident Russia would come to Venezuela's aid if the South American country were to face intrusions from the Trump administration. "I am sure, even if we do not ask, we will be given even more support to boost Venezuela's defense capacity and sovereignty," Maduro said during an energy forum.

The comments were prompted in part by President Donald Trump's August statement that the U.S. would consider a "military option" for stabilizing Venezuela, which has been plagued by economic turmoil and civil unrest. Maduro said he would discuss military cooperation with the Russian government next week, McClatchy reported.

The Venezuelan leader thanked the Russian government and spoke about the mutual respect between former Venezuelan leader Hugo Chavez and Russian President Vladimir Putin, adding that the cooperation between the two countries made the Venezuelan forces "three times stronger over the past 15 years."

"Putin is the leader of the emerging world, the world we want to live in. Putin carries the banner of decorum, dignity and peace," Maduro added.

Comment: Oil and Revolution create a volatile partnership. The US sees an opportunity. Russia sees the gathering storm. Will Russia be the safe haven Venezuela seeks?

After holding a press conference with Iranian President Hassan Rouhani, Turkey's President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has held a meeting with Iranian Supreme Leader Sayyid Ali Hosseini Khamenei. The meeting between a legally secular but de-facto Sunni Islamist President of Turkey and the legal and spiritual leader of the Shi'a Islamic Republic of Iran holds symbolic significance, but also wide ranging ramifications for the region.

During the cordial meeting, which President Rouhani also attended, the two countries agreed to take "every possible measure" to prevent Iraqi Kurds from implement the secession from Iraq which they recently voted for in a referendum boycotted by Arabs, Turkomen and other non-Kurds.

For Turkey and Iran, allowing Iraq's territorial unity to be subsumed is not only considered a major security threat due to Kurdish separatist and terrorist movements in their countries, but the Kurdish referendum is furthermore considered a betrayal.

Comment: Shifting sands, new partners, Turkey and Iran have found a common ground where Israel cannot call the shots.

EU Parliament defends right to use 'proportionate force' in Catalan referendum crackdown

EU member states have the right to use "proportionate" force to defend the rule of law, Frans Timmermans, European Commission First Vice President, said three days after hundreds were injured by Spanish police trying to stop an independence vote in Catalonia.

"It is a duty for any government to uphold the rule of law, and this sometimes requires the proportionate use of force," Timmermans told the European Parliament in Strasbourg during a debate on Catalonia. "Respect for the rule of law is not optional - it's fundamental," he said.

An independence referendum was held in the relatively prosperous Spanish region of Catalonia on Sunday, despite Madrid labeling it "unconstitutional."

A brutal mass police crackdown during the vote saw over 800 people, including women and the elderly, injured in Barcelona and elsewhere across the region.

"If the law does not give you what you want, you can oppose the law, you can work to change the law, but you cannot ignore the law," Timmermans said. For the EU, "it is fundamental that the constitutions of every one of our member states are upheld and respected," he added.

According to Timmermans, the Catalan regional government "has chosen to ignore the law in organizing the referendum of last Sunday."

Comment: 'Respect for the law' has been placed above respect for the people, their choices and wellbeing. The EU is a failing state in the initial stages of disintegration and will justify violence against threats to disrupt its unified integrity.

Senate Intel leader: "No evidence of Russian collusion found, but we'll keep looking anyway"

richard burr
Republican Senator Richard Burr (R-NC) held a presser today to discuss the Senate Intelligence Committee's ongoing Russian Collusion investigation.

Republican Senator Burr said there is no evidence of Russian collusion into the 2016 US presidential election. This comes after thousands of hours of testimony and investigations. But Burr said the the committee will keep the investigation open!

The Russian hoax continues! Burr is a useful idiot. Democrats want to ultimately shut down conservative websites. And Burr is too dense to understand it.

Comment: Stephen Lendman comments:
"You can't walk away from this and believe that Russia's not currently active," [Burr] roared. Despite no evidence proving it last year or now, he said "(t)here is consensus among members and staff that we trust the (intelligence community's) conclusions..."
Investigations reflect longstanding Russia bashing. Trump was right calling them "a hoax," shameful congressional action, along with endless other other examples of rogue governance.

Months of time, effort and money spent drew a blank. Without setting a deadline, Burr said
"(w)e hope we will very soon reach some definite conclusion."

Netherlands' defense minister and top general resign following probe into death of two soldiers

Defense Minister Jeanine Hennis
Defense Minister Jeanine Hennis
The Netherlands' caretaker Defense Minister Jeanine Hennis resigned over failures by her ministry that led to the death of two Dutch soldiers in a United Nations (UN) peacekeeping mission in Mali.

Hennis declared her resignation on Tuesday, after the Dutch Safety Board (DBS) released the findings of a probe regarding a deadly incident on June 6, 2016 in which two Dutch soldiers were killed and a third was severely injured by a mortar attack by militants, presstv reported.

According to the DBS report, the Dutch Defense Ministry had allowed the pursuit of strategic goals to take precedence over safety and medical standards.

Hennis' resignation came only days before the country's caretaker government is due to be replaced by a new coalition, led by Prime Minister Mark Rutte.

White House Press Secretary Sarah Sanders responded to failed former presidential candidate Hillary Clinton after she blamed the National Rifle Associate for the shooting in Las Vegas that killed 59 people.

"It's very easy for Mrs. Clinton to criticize and to come out, but I think we need to remember, the only person with blood on their hands is that of the shooter," she said during the White House press briefing.

Sanders fielded several questions from reporters about gun control in the wake of the shooting, arguing that it wasn't the time to discuss politics.

Russia bypasses US oil war, signs billion dollar deals with Saudi Arabia

Saudi Arabia's Energy Minister Khalid Al-Falih said the partnership between Moscow and Riyadh has inspired unprecedented cooperation from 24 oil-producing states, including Organization of Petroleum Exporting Countries members and non-OPEC nations.

"It has breathed back life into OPEC which found itself, quite frankly, unable to swing its production as supply was persistently high in 2014 and global inventories were steadily rising ahead of demand," he said at the Russia-Saudi investment forum in Moscow.

The minister is optimistic about the potential rebalancing of the oil market and added that prices would be determined by the market.

"Prices are ultimately for the markets to determine based on marginal cost of production and expectations of supply and demand. But as I think of fundamentals I am more optimistic than I have been in the last two or three years, demand is healthy around the world in developed and developing countries," said the minister.

Senator blasts investigation into 'Russian' Facebook ads: 'You're not going to influence anything with $100k in ads, the whole thing is farcical'

The potential impact of the so-called Russia-linked Facebook ads recently turned over to Senate Intelligence Committee, is vastly exaggerated, Virginia Senator Richard Black (R) told RT, adding that the only goal of the ever-expanding probe is to defame US President Trump.

On Wednesday, the Senate Intelligence Committee briefed the public on the ongoing investigation into the alleged Russian meddling in the US election. Senator Mark Warner (D-VA), the top Democrat on the Senate Intelligence Committee, advocated new restrictions on online ads. According to a proposed bill, the ads purchased by "foreign entities,"such as Russia, would be labeled as such to "protect" Americans from outside interference.

"If you see an ad on a social media site, Americans should know whether the source of that ad was a foreign entity," Warner said.

Iran and Turkey have agreed to take "every possible measure" against the independence vote that was recently held in the Iraqi Kurdistan, the leaders of the two countries said, accusing Israel of masterminding the move.

The independence referendum in the Iraqi Kurdistan is a "betrayal" of the Middle East and a threat to the future of the entire region, Iran's Supreme Leader, Ayatollah Seyyed Ali Khamenei, said during a meeting with Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in Tehran.

He went on to say that the vote would entail "long-term repercussions" for all neighboring states, adding that Iran and Turkey "should take every possible measure against the move and the Iraqi government, too, should make decisions and take serious action," as reported by the Iranian state media.

Comment: Sounds like Putin is still cleaning house. From back in March:
Russian President Vladimir Putin has signed a decree dismissing ten high-ranking generals in the Interior Ministry, Federal Penitentiary Service and the Investigative Committee. The decree has been published on the official website containing legal information.

Besides that, prosecutor generals of the Republic of Chuvashia and the Jewish Autonomous Region have also been dismissed.
