More PNAC delusion: Pentagon justifies increase of US troops in Africa as key to 'global strategy'

The Pentagon is calling for an increase in the US military footprint in Africa, where there are over 6,000 troops currently stationed. This as a top general confirms the four US soldiers killed in Niger were ambushed by an Islamic State-affiliate.

Speaking from the Pentagon on Monday, Chairman of the Joint Chiefs of Staff General Joseph Dunford told reporters that US troops in Niger do not go on patrol with local forces unless the chances of enemy combat are "unlikely." He confirmed the four US service members killed in the October 4 ambush were taken by surprise when they were attacked by a group of 50 militants affiliated with the Islamic State (IS, formerly ISIS/ISIL).

US forces in Niger were ambushed by fighters from Mali, which became a terrorist stronghold after Libya collapsed into chaos and anarchy following the US intervention in 2011. Since then, neighboring countries have seen an increase in the number and severity of terrorist attacks.

Dumb move: Pentagon will join DHS in banning Kaspersky software from their systems

Kaspersky Lab logo
The Defense Department is doing a thorough review to ensure software from the embattled Russian anti-virus firm Kaspersky does not touch any military systems, a Defense spokeswoman tells Nextgov.

The move follows a September order from the Homeland Security Department directing all civilian government agencies to remove Kaspersky software from their systems within three months. That directive cites intelligence community concerns that the Russian firm is too closely tied to the Kremlin.

That order does not apply to the Defense Department, which is outside Homeland Security's jurisdiction, but the Pentagon plans to "follow the intent of the directive" and the department's top information security officer is assessing what changes need to be made, if any, Defense Spokeswoman Heather Babb said.

Babb declined to say whether the Pentagon has determined that Kaspersky is currently running on any military systems or has in the past, citing operational security.

Comment: There goes any chance the DOD had of actually protecting their networks...

Hillary calls Uranium One revelations "debunked", "baloney" - but the Clinton machine knew it was a scandal from day one

Former Secretary of State Hillary Clinton said the stories about her and former President Clinton helping Russia obtain drilling rights in the U.S. through Uranium One have been "debunked" and are just people peddling "bologna."

"I would say it's the same bologna they've been peddling for years, and there's been no credible evidence by anyone. In fact, it's been debunked repeatedly and will continue to be debunked," Clinton said in an October interview with C-SPAN.

While Clinton says that anyone who believes that she helped Russia is in the wrong, The New York Times report details how she and her husband directly helped Russia get a vested interest in the U.S. oil market.

The New York Times reported in April 2015 that the Clinton's had a hand in helping a Russian energy company obtain drilling rights in the U.S. The Russian company had to get State Department help to purchase the Canadian company Uranium One, which made the Russian agency - Rosatom - one of the largest uranium producers in the world. Rosatom purchased the Canadian company - UrAsia - in January 2005, obtaining its uranium stakes stretching from Central Asia to Western America.

Comment: Butter wouldn't melt in this creature's mouth, apparently:
Internal emails from Clinton's inner circle, leaked by Wikileaks, prove that the Clinton mafia was in a bit of a panic after conservative media began to dig up the details of the Uranium One pay-to-play deal, way back in 2015...with the subject line "It's out there."

The original email from Tony Cark (Hillary's research director) to Jennifer Palmieri (Hillary's director of communications) and Brian Fallon (Hillary's press secretary) linked to a Daily Caller article titled, "Firm Co-Founded By Hillary's Campaign Chair Lobbies For Russia's Uranium One".

The Daily Caller article was forwarded to HRC's campaign chairman John Podesta, with an "FYI"...
Senate records show that The Podesta Group has lobbied the State Department on behalf of Uranium One - once in 2012, when Hillary Clinton was secretary of state, and once in 2015.

Uranium One paid The Podesta Group $40,000 to lobby the State Department, the Senate, the National Park Service and the National Security Council for "international mining projects," according to a July 20, 2012 filing.

Leaked report shows NATO doesn't think they can defend against a Russian attack

tanks
NATO has little confidence in its ability to counter a Russian attack against eastern European members, according to a leaked internal document.

German newspaper Der Spiegel published excerpts from NATO's "Progress Report on the Strengthened Deterrence and Defense Capability of the Alliance" in its Saturday edition. The report outlines the alliance's ability to "react rapidly and - if necessary - sustainably" in the event of a crisis.

The report concludes that smaller command structures and logistical difficulties puts the alliance at a disadvantage if Russia makes a move on countries such as Poland, Estonia, Latvia or Lithuania.

"NATO's ability to logistically support rapid reinforcement in the strongly expanded territory of the European commander's area of responsibility has atrophied since the end of the Cold War," the report said, according to Der Spiegel.

Russia is estimated to have the military capacity to overrun NATO forces in the Baltics in as little as 36 hours, according to a report from American think tank Rand Corporation. NATO has vastly reinforced its presence on Russia's doorstep in recent years, but defense ministers call for a modernization of the alliance.

"We know that we must adapt and modernize the alliance and its command structures," Norwegian Defense Minister Ine Eriksen Søreide told Spiegel.

Comment: First, this is obvious. Second, it's just an excuse to gain more funding for NATO, money which goes into the coffers of the arms and "defense" industries. Third, it's a racket, because Russia has absolutely no intention of invading Poland or the Baltics. It's a NATO fantasy, pure and simple.

Moscow vetoed a UN Security Council resolution to renew the mandate for a UN mission investigating the use of chemical weapons in Syria. Ahead of the vote, Russia suggested postponing the discussion, but its proposal was rejected.

The current mandate for UN and Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) representatives to work in Syria expires on November 17.

Washington has prepared a document to prolong the mandate, which was supported by 11 votes on Tuesday. Two UNSC members - Russia and Bolivia - voted against the document, while China and Kazakhstan abstained.

UK minister says only way of dealing with British ISIS fighters is to kill them - U.S. envoy says all foreign fighters will die in Syria

British Isil fighters should be killed in Syria rather than be allowed to return to UK, a Government minister has said. Rory Stewart said converts who leave Britain to fight for the terror group are guilty of horrific acts and the only way of dealing with them is to kill them "in almost every case".

His remarks come just days after the independent reviewer of terrorism legislation Max Hill QC said young people who travelled to Syria after being "brainwashed" should be allowed to come home and rejoin society.

Mr Hill told the BBC that it was not worth losing a generation of young people who "naively" went to join Isil before attempting to come back to the UK.

Asked by BBC Radio 5 Live's John Pienaar if they had "brought on themselves what they are about to get?", he said: "These are people who have essentially moved away from any kind of allegiance towards the British Government.

"They are absolutely dedicated, as members of the Islamic State, towards the creation of a caliphate, they believe in an extremely hateful doctrine which involves killing themselves, killing others and trying to use violence and brutality to create an eighth century, or seventh century, state.

"So I'm afraid we have to be serious about the fact these people are a serious danger to us, and unfortunately the only way of dealing with them will be, in almost every case, to kill them."

Two years after the peak of the refugee crisis, Germany, which has been the most popular European destination for asylum seekers, has decided to dissuade potential new arrivals by launching a website that reveals the truth about hardships they could face.

The German Foreign Ministry launched the website, 'Rumors about Germany - facts for migrants', on Monday. The webpage is available in three languages - English, French and Arabic - and features small colorful posts debunking what are called myths and "big lies" about Germany, as well as providing potential migrants and asylum seekers with grim facts about their future lives in the European "dreamland."

"You may have heard life is easy, but the reality is different," the site states, noting that those seeking a better life in Europe would most likely have to "return with no money and have to start from scratch" or "face many difficulties."

The Russian Defense Minister has spoken about the success of the Moscow's military operation in Syria.

"Today, Daesh controls less than 5%. Before the start of the operation of the Russian Air and Space Forces, more than 70% of the territory of Syria was under Daesh control," Russian Defense Minister Sergey Shoigu said at a meeting of defense ministers of ASEAN member countries and dialogue partners.

He underlined that Moscow is focused on restoration of a peaceful life in the country.

"998 cities and settlements have been liberated, the liberated area is 503 thousand 223 square kilometers. Most of the militants were eliminated. The process of restoring a peaceful life in the country has begun. Since the beginning of the operation of the Russian Air Force, since 2015, 1.12 million people have returned to their homes. Only in 2017 - 660 thousand," Shoigu said.

Human Rights Watch claims China is collecting massive voice pattern database of its citizens

The Chinese government is collecting thousands of "voice pattern" samples from unsuspecting citizens for a national biometric voice database, adding to an already-indepth biometric profile of many individuals.

Human Rights Watch (HRW) said Monday that to create the database, Chinese authorities have collaborated with indigenous speech recognition technology company iFlytek, which is responsible for producing 80 percent of all such technology in the country, to create a system which can automatically detect specific voices.

HRW said the government has "stepped up" the use of biometric technology in recent years, to "bolster its existing mass surveillance and social control efforts."

"The Chinese government has been collecting the voice patterns of tens of thousands of people with little transparency about the program or laws regulating who can be targeted or how that information is going to be used," said Sophie Richardson, HRW's China director. "Authorities can easily misuse that data in a country with a long history of unchecked surveillance and retaliation against critics."

How interesting: Mueller's hedge fund investments are linked to Russia and George Soros

Robert Mueller's complex financial entanglements include investments linked to George Soros and Russia. During Mueller's tenure at the FBI, high profile cases of financial wrongdoing within hedge funds that he invested in were ignored by federal law enforcement.

An Offended America investigation has revealed that Robert Mueller's holdings in a fund of funds expose him to Russian investments and to hedge funds tied to George Soros. Mueller's exclusive hedge funds were not open to the general public, but rather wealthy private accredited investors. The minimum investment in several of the funds is $10 Million.
