Donald J. Trump - @realDonaldTrump - 10:57 AM UTC - 11 Apr 2018
Russia vows to shoot down any and all missiles fired at Syria. Get ready Russia, because they will be coming, nice and new and "smart!" You shouldn't be partners with a Gas Killing Animal who kills his people and enjoys it!
Donald J. Trump - @realDonaldTrump - 11:37 AM UTC - 11 Apr 2018Russia said it would destroy the platforms that launch the missiles, not only the missiles themselves. Did nobody explain the difference to Trump?
Our relationship with Russia is worse now than it has ever been, and that includes the Cold War. There is no reason for this. Russia needs us to help with their economy, something that would be very easy to do, and we need all nations to work together. Stop the arms race?
Smart missiles should fly towards terrorists, not [Syria's] lawful government, which has spent several years fighting against international terrorism on its territory," Russian Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova said in response to Trump's tweet on Wednesday.
She added the US may be seeking to undermine an inspection by chemical weapons experts, who are planning to investigate on the ground in Syria after the alleged attack which sparked the current confrontation between Russia and the US.
"Are the OPCW inspectors aware that smart missiles are about to destroy all evidence of the chemical weapons use on the ground? Or is that the actual plan - to cover up all evidence of this fabricated attack with smart missile strikes, so that international inspectors had no evidence to look for?" Zakharova asked.
"If the Iranians act against Israel from Syrian territory, Syrian President Bashar Assad and his regime will be those that pay the price."The aggressive rhetoric from senior officials in the IDF comes after Iran's Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei referred to Israel's attack on the T-4 air base as "Israel's crime" and threatened that it "would not remain without a response."

Comment: Nauert is not doing blondes everywhere any favors. First, the U.S. government has no mechanisms, because it has no experts on the ground to conduct any kind of actual investigation. They cannot possibly know if the Syrian military was responsible, because they cannot even be sure that the event happened as described by the terrorist sources on which they're basing their conclusions. They cannot rule out a chemical of a type possessed by the terrorists who held Douma, assuming a chemical was even used. As such, they cannot possibly know beyond a reasonable doubt whether or not the Syrian government/military were responsible. This is just idiotic, but then again, it's the U.S. State Department.
Defense Secretary Mattis, who had the integrity to admit earlier this year that there was no evidence Assad used chemical weapons last year, had this to say: "We're still assessing the intelligence - ourselves and our allies. We're still working on this." Hopefully his professionalism prevails.
