A new Russian missile interceptor successfully and accurately destroyed a simulated target during its latest test, the Russian Defense Ministry said as it published epic footage of the launch.

"An air and missile defense unit of the Russian Aerospace Forces has carried out another successful test of a new interceptor missile at the Sary Shagan (Republic of Kazakhstan) anti-ballistic missile testing range," the military said in a statement on Thursday.

The ministry has not revealed the technical specifications of the interceptor missile, or the exact timing of the launch.

"After a series of trials, the interceptor missile confirmed its specifications and successfully performed its task, hitting the simulated target with the specified precision," Deputy Commander of the Air and Missile Defense of the Aerospace Forces Andrey Prikhodko announced.

It was the fourth trial of the new interceptor missile this year, with launches previously held in February, April and July, according to TASS.

In March, Russian President Vladimir Putin unveiled a number of brand-new advanced weapons during his State of the Nation address. The weaponry included the newest intercontinental ballistic missile (ICBM), nuclear-propelled submarines, drone submarines, and even combat lasers.

Best of the Web: Leaked Al Jazeera footage exposes US Israel lobby astroturfing pro-Palestinian student event

A fake pro-Israel protest manufactured by US-based lobbying groups has been exposed in an exclusive clip from a censored Al Jazeera documentary on Israel's influence in the US.

The release of the much-anticipated US version of undercover documentary The Lobby has been stalled since the UK version, which aired in 2017, revealed Israel's influence within the Labour party and its role in drumming up accusations of anti-Semitism.

The US version is yet to be broadcast, reportedly because of pressure placed on Qatar, which owns Al Jazeera. The delay has prompted segments to be leaked.

According to one Hoover Institution campus fellow, "This is the first foot soldier activity that I think we've been forced to do."

A Hoover fellow who identified himself as "Marshall," explained the background of the protest: "It was basically like Noah Pollak coming in and being like, 'Look, there are these jihadis who basically support suicide bombing, and they're on a campus and you have to stop them.'"

"It's a chance to shout at Arabs," another fellow interjected.

Marshall, who is African American, divulged his fear that some media outlet might publish "a photo of Deon [another Hoover Institute fellow] and me together, and we're just like clearly identifiable. They're like, "Oh, who are these traitors who sold out to the Jewish conspiracy for money?'"

He then joked: "I'm like, 'We did! We cost $50,000 plus benefits."

Later, as the bus neared the SJP event, Marshall aired more doubts about the staged protest: "No, no, no - this is astroturfing... It's when you set up fake protests."

"It's not that astroturfing is wrong, it's just that your astroturf has to be, like, committed," he lamented.

Months before Al Jazeera's investigative unit went undercover in the Israel lobby, it interviewed me about the way the lobby operates. In the footage presented in this clip, I can be seen explaining that its outfits in Washington have been "manufacturing the image of a grassroots movement by taking corporate money and basically paying people to appear as activists."

[...]

During a private conversation with "Tony," the Al Jazeera undercover reporter who filmed the documentary with a hidden camera, Pollak explained his smash-mouth strategy: "The activism has to be very provocative and, like, attention getting and, like, total no-fucks-given. We're going to be more pro-Israel than you can even imagine. Just to, like, provoke everyone."

In arguing that his tactics were more likely to find an audience in the US than in the home country of "Tony," the Israel lobbyist unleashed a xenophobic diatribe.

"The majority of Americans are pro-Israel," Pollak said. "Whereas, if you take a poll of Israel in the UK, it's just pure hatred of Israel. You're country, like, basically let half of fucking Pakistan move in. So you have a different problem than we do here."

A top US defense official has renewed warnings to India against purchasing Russian-made arms and defense systems like the S-400, ahead of a historic first meeting next month between both nations' defense and foreign affairs heads.

"We would still have very significant concerns if India pursued major new platforms and systems (from Russia)," Randall Schriver, the US assistant secretary of defense for Asian and Pacific security affairs, told an audience at the Carnegie Endowment For International Peace in Washington on Wednesday.

"If they choose to go down that route, like I said, I can't sit here and tell you today that the waiver will necessarily be used," Schriver continued, referencing a congressional loophole that allows US allies to protect themselves from current sanctions imposed against Russia by Washington.

An ex-special forces boss has backed a second Brexit referendum, warning that a no-deal outcome would lead to "major concerns" over Britain's security, including from terrorism and "hybrid warfare."

Former chief of the SAS, Major General Jonathan Shaw, told The Independent that if the UK crashed out of the EU: "There would be major concerns on matters like intelligence sharing, on terrorism, hybrid warfare cyber threats."

While noting that it's "theoretically possible to have a separate security agreement," the Major General said there was a "whole host of issues there including data protection, European laws and UK laws."

Australia's new prime minister suffers 'epic fail' in first test

Scott Morrison

If the main reason for changing your party's leader is to make the party more popular, last week's ritual bloodletting in Australia was an epic fail.

Fortuitously, or otherwise, a political poll was being conducted just as Scott Morrison replaced Malcolm Turnbull as Liberal Party leader and prime minister. The Newspoll result saw a 10-point turnaround in a fortnight, from the opposition Labor Party barely leading the Liberal-National coalition 51 to 49 after preferences, to a 56-44 lead for Labor.

The coalition's primary vote fell to 35, while Labor's went up to 39. And Morrison's polling as preferred prime minister was 33 (down from Turnbull's 44 two weeks earlier), while Labor leader Bill Shorten was up seven to 39.

Lawmakers reportedly gearing up to question Bruce Ohr's wife on Fusion GPS ties

Bruce Ohr

Numerous congressional sources are telling SaraACarter.com that after Department of Justice official Bruce Ohr's explosive closed-door testimony on Tuesday, lawmakers are gearing up to call his wife, Nellie Ohr, in for questioning regarding her work with the now-embattled research firm, Fusion GPS. Congress is also seeking access to Bruce Ohr's text messages and emails with top FBI officials.

Fusion GPS was founded by former Wall Street Journal reporter Glenn Simpson and hired by the Democratic National Committee and Hillary Clinton campaign to investigate alleged ties between President Donald Trump's campaign and Russia.

Nellie Ohr, a Russia expert who was hired by Fusion GPS in 2016 to investigate the Trump campaign, received multiple large sum payments from the research firm, according to a U.S. official, with direct knowledge of the payments.

Something 'big' brewing in Syria as US officials ramp up threats

US troops in Syria
© Aboud Hamam / Reuters
We warned previously that something big is coming in Syria as the final showdown for al-Qaeda held Idlib looms with the Syrian Army and Russian aerial and naval forces taking position.

Pentagon and US officials continue pushing the gambit, setting the stage to play the "Assad is gassing his own people" card should so much as an inkling of a White Helmets allegation emerge, in an unprecedented level of telegraphing intentions for leverage on the battlefield.

And right on cue CNN has ramped up its coverage over the past of week of the "last rebel-held stronghold" in Syria, sending a hijab-covered reporter into the territory under rebel permission to interview civilians which CNN says Assad seeks to wipe out, possibly through sarin or other chemical attack.

Putin's pension reform tour de force

President Vladimir Putin and Prime Minister Dmitry Medvedev
© Ekaterina Shtukina / Sputnik
Today, after waiting for as long as possible, President Putin finally addressed the Russian people on the topic of pension reform and presented his own take of this matter. When the lazy clowns who run the Russian presidential website finally are done translating the full text, it will appear here: http://en.kremlin.ru/events/president/news/58405. You can also check a good summary made by RT here: https://www.rt.com/politics/437112-putin-on-changes-in-russian/. My purpose today is not to comment on the substance of what Putin said, but on the political dimension of his move.

First, his speech was nothing short of brilliant. Putin readily admitted that this was a very controversial topic and that his own views on the matter have changed because the Russian economy has evolved and also fundamentally changed. By saying this he skillfully deflected the criticism that he has flip-flopped on this issue.

Second, Putin did say that while the proposed reform was controversial, opposition parties did seize this opportunity to score points. Putin had to say that because all the political parties in the Duma rejected this proposal and asked for a referendum or the resignation of the Medvedev government. Only "United Russia" (minus one person) voted for this project and it appears that the majority of the Russian people also opposed it. This is why Putin also added that there were some constructive proposals which should be adopted in the final law. In other words, Putin did not appear to "backtrack" or "make concessions", but he did show his willingness to listen to the opposition and the Russian people.

F-35 program officials covering up life-threatening flaws in aircraft according to POGO

Senior officials developing the F-35 Joint Strike Fighter for the US armed forces - the most expensive military program of all time - are covering up dangerous flaws in the plane instead of fixing them, the Project On Government Oversight (POGO) said.

"Officials in the F-35 Joint Program Office are making paper reclassifications of potentially life-threatening design flaws to make them appear less serious, likely in an attempt to prevent the $1.5 trillion program from blowing through another schedule deadline and budget cap," POGO said in an investigation released on Wednesday.

The Center for Defense Information at POGO obtained a document showing how F-35 officials were re-categorizing rather than fixing major design flaws to be able to claim they had completed the program's development phase without having to pay overruns for badly needed fixes, POGO said.

A recent Government Accountability Office report showed that the F-35 aircraft still had 111 Category One deficiencies that may cause death, severe injury, loss or major damage and that critically restricted the combat readiness capabilities of the armed forces using the aircraft, POGO noted.

With the revelation that officials made paperwork fixes to make these serious deficiencies appear acceptable, it seems that much of that work is being ignored in the name of political expediency and protecting F-35 funding," POGO said.

The Project On Government Oversight is a nonpartisan independent watchdog that investigates and exposes waste, corruption, abuse of power, and instances of the government failing to serve the public or silencing individuals who report wrongdoing.

Moscow has briefed US diplomats on a plan by militants to stage a false flag chemical weapons attack in Syria's Idlib province meant to frame Damascus, the Russian ambassador in the US has said.

Anatoly Antonov, the Russian ambassador in Washington, confirmed to the media on Wednesday that he had met with the US special representative to Syria, James Jeffrey, and David M. Satterfield, acting assistant secretary of state for near eastern affairs.

The attendees of the rare meeting and the fact that it had taken place earlier this week was revealed by US State Department spokesperson Heather Nauert during a daily briefing.
