Damaged fruit
1,000 hectares of citrus, kaki and vegetables in the Region of Valencia

Last weekend's hailstorms in the Region of Valencia caused considerable damage to agricultural producers, after more than 2,000 hectares of fruit trees were affected in Lleida and another 700 in Aragon.

According to the first estimates of the Valencian Growers Association (AVA-ASAJA), a total of 1,000 hectares of crops have been affected, especially citrus, but also kakis and vegetables to a lesser extent.

The most affected area is that located between Manises and Ribarroja del Turia, especially the municipalities of Carasols, Llobatera and El Polvorín, with more than 500 hectares. In these places, the hailstones reached the size of tennis balls and in some cases caused the loss of up to 100% of the next citrus harvest, as well as damage to the trees.

The region of Marina Alta has also suffered the impact of the hailstorm, especially Sagra, Ràfol d'Almunia, Tormos, Orba, Benimeli and Sanet i Negrals, where citrus crops have suffered the worst damage.

In Ribera Alta, especially Rafelguaraf and L'Ènova, and La Costera, in Llocnou d'en Fenollet, some specific areas have also registered some damages, affecting up to 30% of the citrus crops.

To the impact of this hailstorm we must add that of the recent heatwave in the Region, which will result in a significant decline in production volumes for the next citrus season.

However, in other production areas where there was no hail, but only rainfall, the weather has been welcome to alleviate water shortages after prolonged drought.

Freak hailstorm turns desert white around Alice Springs, Australia

Image
The Red Centre was blanketed in hail on Saturday following a freak storm
In a bizarre but beautiful sight the Red Centre turned white on Saturday following a thunderstorm which blanketed the area in a sheet of hail.

Photographs show a stunning contrast between the bright earth and hailstones covering the ground in parts of Alice Springs.

While the area does see storms it's not often conditions are just right to deliver the spectacle it did at the weekend.

'This event was set apart due to the fact it was a slow moving storm,' Jackson Browne, a meteorologist at the Darwin Bureau of Meteorology explained to Daily Mail Australia.

'Usually these storm cells move with quite a lot of pace,' he said, adding that although hail is present in most storms it has often melted by the time it meets the ground.

As the hailstones were only marble-sized they weren't large enough to cause any damage, but they did provide quite a sight for locals, many of whom have never seen hail despite living in the area for years.

Giant hail falls in Minooka, Illinois

Illinois hail
As storms passed over the region, one of them found its way over Minooka and dumped giant balls of hail over the village, according to a public information statement from the National Weather Service and several photos that popped up on Facebook showing the hail.

"There were multiple reports of hail up to 4.25 inches in diameter," the statement said. "Some of this hail caused severe damage to vehicle windshields."

National Weather Service Meteorologist Andy Krein said for hail to reach this size, you need a strong updraft in the thunderstorm itself.

"That's the vertical motion that is holding the hailstone aloft and in an environment that is conducive to the growth of the ice around it," Krein said. "That would be in the range where temperatures are between 0 celsius and minus 20 celsius. The updraft would have to be strong enough to suspend that big chunk of ice that high in the atmosphere."

Madrid hailstorm

Freak weather conditions for June caused chaos in Madrid on Thursday when the capital was hit by electric storms, torrential rain and even hail.

Around mid-morning the skies darkened and then the heavens opened causing torrents of water to flood streets and overflow drainage systems.

Some metro lines were forced to close and roads across the city turned into gushing waterways causing flashfloods.

Those unlucky enough to be caught in the downpour sought cover as they were pelted with hailstones.

Across Madrid people recorded the adverse conditions and posted the images to social media.

Here is a selection of the best footage:

Summer hasn't officially started, but severe thunderstorms in the midwest and south didn't get the memo.

An intense (to say the least) hail storm hit the town of Gatlinburg, Tenn., last week for about 10 minutes, according to YouTuber irishgurrier, who uploaded video of the June 2 storm.

The video shows hail coming down so hard you can't see past the house he's standing by, as it pounds nearby vehicles, creating a massive pile of ice.

In an aftermath video, the person recording is seen walking through the piles of ice ... in flip flops.
