Typhoon Lionrock hits Northern Japan

Tokyo—At least 11 people were found dead in northern Japan on Wednesday after Typhoon Lionrock battered the region with torrential rain, triggering widespread flooding.

National broadcaster NHK said police found the bodies of nine people at a home for the elderly that suffered flooding. The home is in the northern prefecture of Iwate, which took a direct hit from Lionrock. Separately, the bodies of an elderly man and an elderly woman were also discovered in Iwate, NHK said.

Rivers in parts of Iwate and the northern island of Hokkaido flooded, inundating residential areas and blocking roads. Television footage showed cars and homes submerged in muddy waters.

Japanese media reported that hundreds of residents in Iwate and Hokkaido were stranded, while several bridges were destroyed or swept away by floods.

Lionrock crossed northern Japan during Tuesday night, becoming the fourth typhoon this season to make landfall in Japan and the first to hit the northeast from the Pacific Ocean since records began in 1951, according to the Japan Meteorological Agency.

Unusual weather patterns led Lionrock to take a slow and wandering path through the Pacific. It started off Japan's eastern coast and initially headed south before making a U-turn to the north and then veering northwest and making landfall.

Tsunami wall found in ancient Harappan town

Harappa Tsunami Wall
© The Hindu
Research by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research (CSIR) and Goa-based National Institute of Oceanography (NIO) has provided evidence for the burial of parts of the Harappan port town of Dholavira, Gujarat, by marine sediments possibly transported by a tsunami.

Dholavira was the site of the largest port-town of the Harappan period Dr. Rajiv Nigam, former Deputy Director of NIO, told press persons here on Monday.

Located within India's borders, Dholavira was a well-planned urban settlement that flourished for about 1,500 years from about 3,450 to 5,000 years ago, said Dr. Nigam.

A unique feature of Dholavira is the presence of a 14-18-metre-thick wall, apparently built as a protective measure.

Walls of such thickness are not found even in historic times, the real purpose of the Dholavira wall has generated considerable debate.

Recently, a group of scientists deputed by NIO and led by Dr. Nigam, suggested the wall was built to protect the town from extreme oceanic events such as storm surges and tsunamis. Ancient Indians (in the Harappan settlement) were aware of tsunami and storm protection measures, said Dr. Nigam, giving a new interpretation of thick walls at Dholavira.

He said tsunamis are known to have hit the region during the historical period. For instance, the Makran earthquake of November 28, 1945, generated a huge tsunami, over 10 metres in height, which devastated large areas along the northern shores of the Arabian Sea. The exact timing of the sediments deposited in Dholavira is yet to be established, he said. "The thick wall in Dholavira shows that the Harappans were not only aware of the potential threats from tsunamis, but they were also pioneers in coastal disaster management," said Outgoing Director, SWA Naqvi.

Hawaii bracing for back-to-back hurricanes: Meteorologists predict impacts worse than Tropical Storm Iselle

The National Weather Service says Hurricane Madeline could come dangerously close to the Big Island by Wednesday and may have impacts worse than Tropical Storm Iselle in 2014.

"This looks like potentially the strongest tropical cyclone, which includes hurricanes and tropical storms, to approach very close to the coast in the past several years," said meteorologist Chris Brenchley with the Central Pacific Hurricane Center.

Tropical Storm Iselle toppled hundreds of Albizia trees on the Big Island and caused an estimated $79 million in damage.

"The time is now to prepare," said Brenchley.

Lightning bolt kills 19 cows taking shelter under tree near Hallsville, Texas

Just two days after lightning killed 300 reindeer in Norway, lightning killed nineteen cows in Texas. Witnesses say lightning hit a tree just north of Hallsville during the storm, killing the cows that were standing underneath it for shelter.

It was a tragic ending for the cows trying to get relief from a storm. Victor Benson saw it happen.

"All of a sudden, a lightning bolt came down and the cows just fell," he explained.

"In the blink of an eye a lightning bolt, and there was lightning everywhere, but just one (bolt) and it was over," he added.

Nineteen cows were killed as a result of that strike, about a third of the herd in the pasture where they were. A mark is still visible on the tree where the lightning hit.

323 reindeer killed by lightning in Norway

The reindeer were found dead in an area of 50m radius
If the chances of getting struck by lightning are slim, the chances of 323 reindeer getting struck by lightning must be miniscule, but that's exactly what seems to have happened on a mountain plateau in Norway.

When Knut Nylend, an official from the Norwegian Nature Inspectorate (Statens naturoppsyn - NNI) went out on a routine inspection near Hardangervidda National Park on Friday, he wasn't expecting to see hundreds of dead reindeer lying across a field.

"They were lying there dead in a fairly concentrated area. Reindeer are pack animals and are often close together. During a heavy thunderstorm, they may have gathered even closer together out of fear," NNI spokesman Knut Nylend told Norwegian news outlet NTB, as cited by The Local.

Flash floods, lightning and golf ball sized hailstones hit UK

UK lightning storm

Extreme weather wreaked havoc across parts of the UK yesterday as golf ball sized hail stones rained down and the country was hit by a massive lightning storm.

Emergency crews have spent the day pumping out water from homes after a number of incidents were caused by a massive storm which rolled through the middle of England even taking down a supermarket roof.

Flash floods bringing rainfall of up to 50mm hit parts of the country as a ferocious lightning storm crossed the mid section and headed eastwards in the late afternoon.

The village of Kirkton was deluged in water as golf ball sized hail stones slammed down in the streets of Deeping in Lincolnshire.

They also pelted the ground from morning till afternoon in Oxford.

Weather bomb: The rare, deep-Earth tremor that shook the planet

storm
The storm that caused the deep-Earth tremor was a 'weather bomb' that struck over the North Atlantic. This is a small but potent storm in which pressure quickly builds, creating a more vigorous storm

A rare deep-Earth tremor has been detected for the first time on the ocean floor in Japan.

Using seismic equipment, researchers have managed to trace its location to a distant and powerful storm between Greenland and Iceland.

The findings could help experts learn more about the Earth's inner structure and improve the detection of earthquakes and oceanic storms.
