At least two people have been killed and three are missing since Hurricane Newton struck northwestern Mexico, bringing heavy torrential rains, breaking windows, downing trees, and leaving households without power.

Category 1 Hurricane Newton hit the resort city of Cabo San Lucas on Mexico's Baja California peninsula on Tuesday morning, before heading out into the Gulf of California.

Jose Luis Rios, the captain of La Paz city, told reporters that at least two people have died in the storm. The bodies of two people believed to be crew members of a fishing boat were found on a beach, while three others still remain missing.

According to the US National Hurricane Center, Newton's wind speeds reached 120 kilometers per hour. "Heavy rain could cause life-threatening flash floods and mud slides, especially in mountainous terrain," the center said.

"The storm has already unleashed widespread 75-150 mm of rainfall along Mexico's western coastline with local amounts approaching 300 mm resulting in flooding and mudslides," Accuweather website reported.

A huge storm bearing down on the Pacific coast of Mexico has strengthened to a hurricane just hours before it is due to make landfall.

Hurricane Newton is heading north-west towards the southern end of the Baja California peninsula with winds of about 75mph (120 km/h).

The US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said Newton could trigger flash floods.

It warned that preparations to protect life and property "should be rushed to completion".

Late on Monday, overcast skies in the Los Cabos municipality gave way to heavy rain and the wind was building in strength.

Twelve shelters opened and motorists queued to fill their cars with fuel ahead of the hurricane's arrival.

The same weather system lashed areas of the south-western state of Guerrero over the weekend before strengthening to a tropical storm.

Torrential rain that began on Saturday caused more than 30 mudslides across the state, forcing main roads to close.

In the resort of Acapulco, floods and landslides affected dozens of homes and schools and about 200 people had to be rescued from a housing complex.

One dead and more than 200,000 without power as hurricane Hermine leaves swath of destruction up U.S. East Coast

hurrican hermine damage
© ReutersEmergency services responded to more than 300 calls overnight. Tallahassee Mayor Andrew Gillum estimated as many as 100,000 area residents were without electricity Friday morning
Hurricane Hermine slammed into Florida leaving one person dead, 253,000 without power and caused dozens of towns in its path to evacuate as it continues to cause chaos on its way into Georgia and the Carolinas.

The Category 1 storm hit just east of St. Marks around 1.30am EDT with winds around 80mph, according to the U.S. National Hurricane Center.

Projected storm surges of up to 12 feet menaced a wide swath of the coast and an expected drenching of up to 10 inches of rain carried the danger of flooding along the storm's path over land, including the state capital Tallahassee, which had not been hit by a hurricane since Kate in 1985.

Florida Governor Rick Scott, who declared a state of emergency in 51 counties, said 6,000 National Guard members were ready to mobilize once the storm passed.

Hermine - downgraded to a tropical storm - weakened as it moved into southern Georgia, and was 55 miles southwest of Savannah, moving northeast while packing sustained winds of 55pm as of 10am EDT on Friday.

After pushing through Georgia on Friday, Hermine is expected to move into the Carolinas on Saturday and up the East Coast with the potential for drenching rain and deadly flooding in New Jersey and New York City over the Labor Day weekend.

The video, filmed Aug. 14 at the Boom Festival, shows the whirlwind filling the air with dust near the event's "Dance Temple."

Concertgoers don't seem particularly bothered by the dust devil, with some ignoring it completely and others casually relocating.

The whirlwind seems to die down after only a few moments.
