Large waterspout filmed off Summerland Key, Florida

waterspout
A large waterspout was reported off the coast of Florida's Summerland Key on October 9, against the backdrop of a sunset.

In this footage, the waterspout can be seen arching from the surface of the Atlantic Ocean to heavy clouds above. The video was taken in Summerland Key, an island about 20 miles east of Key West.

The waterspout was likely a "fair weather waterspout," which the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration describes as those that do not form during thunderstorms. These waterspouts develop on the surface of the water and work upward. Typically, fair weather waterspouts dissipate rapidly when they make landfall, and rarely penetrate far inland.

The National Weather Service called the October 9 waterspout "truly incredible."

Cold air waterspout filmed at Lake Pueblo, Colorado

waterspout
What a sight over Lake Pueblo today as a very well defined funnel and waterspout formed as much colder air moved over the still warm water in the lake.

There was enough spin to create the funnel as captured on camera by viewer Matt Debski. The forces of nature are incredible!

Temperature drops more than 50 degrees as 'all-out blizzard' sets sights on Dakotas

Snow in South Dakota
Snow in South Dakota
A "potentially historic" fall snowstorm is set to wallop a large stretch of the country — evolving into an "all-out blizzard" as it passes over the Dakotas and sending an arctic blast into much of the northern US, forecasters predict.

Denver was downright balmy on Wednesday with a high in the lower 80s — but the temperature had already plummeted into the upper 20s by 1 a.m. as snow began to fall, according to Accuweather. From 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected to fall in the Mile High City on Thursday.

A rarity of a small American bird being swept across the Atlantic by Storm Lorenzo before being discovered in a Co Kerry garden will be the envy of European birdwatchers for years to come, say experts.

The unexpected arrival on Irish shores of the Least Bittern earlier this week was tinged with sadness, however, when the bird died of exhaustion shortly afterwards.

Lorenzo delivered several US-based birds to Irish shores, but none as rare as the Bittern. It is only the 10th time one has been found on this side of the Atlantic.

Rugby World Cup organizers announced Thursday that two crucial pool games scheduled to take place on Saturday have been canceled to avoid the impact of a massive super typhoon set to hit the country.

A decision on whether to go ahead with Japan's do-or-die Pool A showdown against Scotland, set for Sunday in Yokohama, will be taken on the morning of the game.

The Pool B game between New Zealand and Italy in Toyota, Aichi Prefecture, and the Pool C match between England and France in Yokohama have both been canceled — the first time games have been called off in Rugby World Cup history. All fans with tickets will receive a full refund.

The Pool D game between Australia and Georgia in Shizuoka on Friday is expected to go ahead as scheduled, as is the Pool A fixture between Ireland and Samoa in Fukuoka on Saturday.

Typhoon Hagibis is predicted to be the biggest typhoon of the 2019 season and is expected to cause widespread disruption throughout Saturday, with public transport shut down in some areas.

Rugby World Cup tournament director Alan Gilpin said the decision to cancel the matches was made on safety grounds, following extensive consultation with independent weather experts.

"As you can imagine, the decision to cancel these matches has not been taken lightly," he said. "It's been made with the best interests of team, public, tournament and volunteer safety as a priority, based on the expert advice and the detailed information we have available.

Hailstones up to the size of grapefruits fell from a thunderstorm in eastern Colorado on Aug. 13, one of which has been confirmed as an official record for the largest hail ever observed in the state.

A supercell thunderstorm struck near Bethune, Colorado, some 150 miles east of Denver, between 3 p.m. and 4 p.m. MDT on Aug. 13. It produced several very large hailstones, and one of the largest ones was preserved in a freezer by a local family.

Representatives from the National Weather Service in Goodland, Kansas, and the Colorado Climate Center met with the family the following day and measured the hailstone at 4.83 inches in diameter. The NWS confirmed Friday that this officially topped Colorado's previous hail-size record of 4.5 inches.
