Verona in Italy flooded in 'river of hailstones'

Verona, Vicenza and Padua hit by violent storm on Sunday night.

Veneto governor Luca Zaia has signed a 'state of crisis' order after the north Italian city of Verona was hit by a sudden storm on the evening of 23 August.

Witnesses spoke of streets flooded with "rivers of hailstones" in the city centre, with the storm knocking more than 500 trees.

At least 11 dead as Tropical Storm Laura causes severe damage in Haiti and Dominican Republic - nearly foot of rain in 24 hours

Strong winds of up to 85 km/h and heavy rainfall brought by Tropical Storm Laura have caused severe damage in Haiti and Dominican Republic, with at least 11 fatalities reported.

Some areas of the Dominican Republic recorded almost 300mm of rain in 24 hours to 22 August. Several rivers broke their banks. Some of the worst of the flooding was reported in the provinces of Santo Domingo and Distrito Nacional (Greater Santo Domingo).

Four fatalities were reported as a result of either flood or wind damage. Around 1,000 people have evacuated their homes. Power and fresh water supply to more than 100,000 people was interrupted.

In the neighbouring country of Haiti, authorities reported 5 fatalities in Sud-Est and Ouest departments. Later 2 further fatalities were reported.

Three persons died and as many others were injured after being struck by lightning in Salon area of the district on Sunday, officials said.

Sub-Divisional Magistrate of Salon, Ashish Singh, said some people in Gothia Tiwaripur village were grazing animals when lightning accompanied by rain occurred in the evening.

Anjali (17), who had taken shelter under a tree, was electrocuted.

Deepanshi (12) and Kamla (55) got injured and were sent to the district hospital, where they succumbed, the SDM said.

Comment: Elsewhere in India on the same day a strike killed 3 young men in Rajasthan and a farmer was fatally struck in Odisha.

Heavy rain lashes parts of Madhya Pradesh, India - Indore records 10 inches

Madhya Pradesh received heavy rainfall in the western parts on Friday and Saturday, said IMD forecast. Indore recorded highest 263 mm rain, the highest in the state whereas as Bhopal received 211 mm and Dhar 104 mm.

Taking to Twitter, IMD said, ''Heavy to very heavy rainfall with isolated extremely heavy falls have been reported in west Madhya Pradesh. Some of the rainfall observations (0830 hrs IST of yesterday to 0830 hrs IST of today) (in mm) are Dhar-104, Indore-263, Bhopal- 211, Khandwa-93.''

Lightning bolt kills 2, injures 28 in Nwoya, Uganda

Two people have died and 28 others were injured after they were struck by lightning on Saturday afternoon at Patira West Village, Purongo Sub County in Nwoya District during a funeral service.

The deceased Okello Lamemba, 50, a produce dealer at Olwiyo trading centre and one other male adult whose identity could not be established by press time, died from Anaka Hospital where they had been rushed.

According to Mr Ben Okot, LCIII Chairperson of Purongo Sub County who was at the burial ground, the victims were under a tent at the funeral.

Mr Okot said those that sustained injuries are currently receiving medication at Anaka Hospital.

Comment: Also recently a strike killed 2 teenagers in Karachi, Pakistan on August 21.

Last night, Frankie Lucena of Puerto Rico trained his cameras on the eastern sky, anticipating the approach of Tropical Storm Laura. He recorded something he didn't expect. "The storm was generating ELVEs," he says. Note the flashing donut of light just above the treetops in this animation:

Massive losses of sheep in Patagonia, Argentina highlands because of intense snowstorms

Snowstorms and frosts in the high areas of the Argentine Patagonia Rio Negro province could cause the death of 70% of the flock, according to estimates from the provincial Livestock Secretariat, Tabaré Bassi.

Together with technicians from the Agriculture Technology Institute, INTA, officials made a first estimate of losses in the snow covered highlands next to the cordillera, but will have to wait until October to have a more exact estimate. "Any how we are talking of at least 100,000 sheep and 5,000 cattle".

Bassi called for prudence in assessing the dimension of the losses, but did admit that the victims of the intense snow fall followed by frosts are mostly small farmers, with flocks no larger than 250 head, "which makes it a serious survival challenge".

Ski areas in Australia have reported more than 60cm (two feet) of snowfall over the past three days.

A super storm has been dumping on the country's ski slopes since Wednesday, with increasing intensity in terms of the amount of snow falling every 24 hours.

With the coronavirus pandemic locking down the state of Victoria and the ski areas there, most of the resorts open are in New South Wales. They include Perisher, and Thredbo (pictured today) which both reported 25cm of snowfall in the last 24 hours having reported 10cm and 15cm, on earlier days.

Torrential rain causes at least 18 fatalities in Punjab, Pakistan

Torrential rain and thunderstorms on 20 August caused damage and fatalities in Punjab Province, Pakistan.

Pakistan Meteorological Department (PMD) reported that parts of the provincial capital Lahore recorded more than 200mm of rain in 24 hours on 20 August. Heavy rain was reported in other areas of the province, including the city of Hafizabad, which saw over 150 mm of rain during the same period.

Several houses were completely destroyed, and roofs and walls of some buildings collapsed. Local media report that at least 18 people have lost their lives in rain-related incidents. Fatalities were reported in Lahore, along with the districts of Faisalabad, Sheikhupura and Mandi Bahauddin, mostly as a result of collapsed buildings or electrocution. Heavy rainfall triggered a landslide in a coal mine in Chakwal district, killing 3 miners.

PMD has warned of more heavy rainfall in Punjab, Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Sindh provinces over the coming days.

13 waterspouts form over the Great Lakes in one day!

Weather in 2020 keeps making headlines. Huge water tornadoes were spotted all over Ontario lakes on Monday. Footage of the surreal Great Lakes waterspouts are being shared online and more are expected to show up this week.

According to the International Centre for Waterspout Research (ICWR), there were 13 sightings of water funnels throughout the Great Lakes region on Monday.

"We have confirmed a total of 13 waterspouts that formed over parts of the Great Lakes on Monday, August 17. Expect more on Tuesday," says a post from ICWR.
