Long-term heavy rainfall caused a massive landslide in the department of Cauca, southwestern Colombia, on 09 January 2023. Homes were destroyed and hundreds of victims were displaced.
The landslide occurred during the early hours of 09 January 2023 in the municipality of Rosas, Cauca Department. Disaster authorities said huge volumes of debris fell from slopes onto part of Highway 25 below, covering a 900-metre stretch of the road. Highway 25 is an important transport route between the cities of Pasto (Nariño department) and Popayán (Cauca department). The road is likely to remain closed for the next 2 weeks.
Colombia's National Unit for Disaster Risk Management (UNGRD) said several villages in the area are isolated. The Colombian Air Force was deployed to rescue victims by helicopter.

Disaster authorities in Indonesia report at least 2 people have died after flash floods in Central Java Province on the island of Java. Flooding has also affected parts of Banten Province over the last few days.

Flooding struck in Tembalang District, Semarang City, on 06 January 2023 after heavy rain caused an embankment along the Pengkol River to break, folding a housing complex. Semarang City Regional Disaster Management Agency (BPBD) said teams worked diligently to rescue one person from a flooded house. Unfortunately, the victim sustained injuries and passed away, authorities said.
A total of 147 residents were affected by the floods, which have since receded but left behind large amounts of debris, garbage and mud carried by the currents.
Absolute chaos was unleashed yesterday in downtown Porto following little more than 20 minutes of intense rain.
Meteorologists estimate that 25 litres of water per square metre fell in this small time period, transforming parts of the city into a raging river.
Considering northern areas have up till now avoided the kind of flooding horrors experienced in urban areas of Lisbon just before Christmas, Saturday's deluge has seriously worried city authorities.
Deputy mayor Filipe Araújo admitted that "for the first time" water rose 'up' to the surface and did not drain into the underground river.
"We have a river that passes below that normally transports (rain) water. If we don't detect ways of correcting (the problem), it could happen again..." he said.
AccuWeather meteorologists warn that a moisture-packed system set to arrive early next week could be the strongest in a Pacific storm train that has been rolling since the end of 2022.
Another atmospheric river will bring heavy rain and mountain snow to California and neighboring states into early next week.
California has faced a frenzy of storms that have unleashed deadly impacts since the end of 2022, and AccuWeather meteorologists say the onslaught is far from over. One storm in the bunch is poised to aim a firehose of moisture at the Golden State early in the new week, potentially leading to "catastrophic" flooding, in addition to widespread mudslides and road closures, forecasters say.
"The impacts from this storm cannot be understated," AccuWeather Meteorologist Joe Bauer said.
Comment: A summary and good storm preparation advice from a local station:
A snow storm that shutdown much of I-80 earlier this week left the south central city of Rawlins with an unusual amount of snow.
About two feet of snow fell in Rawlins between Sunday night and Wednesday morning, and the snow drifts were several feet deep. Even people with four-wheel drive were getting stuck in roadways.
Michael O'Brien, the utilities supervisor for the City of Rawlins, and his crew helped remove much of the snow. He said typically the area gets only a couple inches of snow in a storm.
"With this amount of snow though, it was very difficult," he said. "I mean, we had everybody from all different departments, different vehicles, every department had a vehicle out there, backhoe skid steer somewhat, trying to remove snow in places."
Where's all the snow? On the European continent, it seems that Norway has the lion's share. It's been dumping on the country's ski areas and there's much more in the forecast.
It has been snowing heavily in some of the Norwegian ski resorts over the past few days.
Those out in the snow at the moment have some of the best conditions in Europe.
It has been a deadly and destructive start to the year in California, as a series of severe storms slammed the state this week, toppling trees, submerging streets and sending water cascading into homes and businesses.
The latest storm hit hard on Thursday - a powerful "atmospheric river" that brought with it hurricane-force winds and torrents of rain. At least two deaths have been reported in connection with the latest storm, including a child whose home was hit by a falling tree in Sonoma county. By Thursday morning, more than 163,500 people were without power, with little reprieve in sight.
The downpour is the latest of three atmospheric rivers to pummel the drought-stricken state, spurred by a bomb cyclone that drew the long plumes of moisture from across the Pacific.
As heavy rains reached southern portions of the Valley, the storm also brought lightning with it.
Workers in Visalia captured the moment that a transformer was struck by lightning, leading to an explosion.
Gilberto Raya captured a video of the explosion Thursday afternoon while at work at the CJ Hammer Pump & Machinery facility.
"We were working, I heard it was pouring. So I decided to go outside and record it. When I was recording, out of nowhere I heard the lighting. I turned my phone & recorded it."
A police officer stationed at Cowdray park police base in Bulawayo was struck and killed by lightning on Tuesday.
Peter Gwaza (42) and her girlfriend Priority Dube (30) were walking along a footpath near Ezimhlophe secondary school when the tragedy struck.
Police confirmed the incident in a statement.
"The ZRP reports a sad incident in which Peter Gwaza (42) and his girlfriend Priority Dube (30) were struck by a bolt of lightning on 3/01/23 while walking along a footpath in Cowdray Park," said a ZRP statement.
Gwaza died on the spot while Dube sustained burns on the stomach and bruises on her hands and face.
The area's councillor Kidwell Mujuru said five people have so far been struck by lightning in the suburb which claimed two lives while three sustained injuries.
Mystery creates wonder, and wonder is the basis for man's desire to understand. Who knows what mysteries will be solved in our lifetime, and what new riddles will become the challenge of the new generations.
