Flooding and landslides triggered by heavy rain have caused widespread damage in Indonesia's South Sulawesi Province.

Disaster authorities report at least 1 person has died and 3 are missing after a landslide struck in Jeneponto Regency late on 12 June. Three houses were buried in the landslide and 6 others severely damaged. Search and rescue teams, assisted by local volunteers, are still looking for 3 missing.

Meanwhile in the neighbouring Bantaeng Regency, floods have affected almost 12,000 people and displaced around 200 in the districts of Bantaeng and Sinoa. A young person was reportedly swept away in the flooding and is still missing.

Flooding struck on 12 June after heavy rain caused the Calendu river to break its banks. Flood water was up to 1.5 metres deep in some areas, causing damage to 2,339 houses and destroying a bridge which has left some areas isolated.

Weakening of Earth's magnetic field probed

Geophysicists have been puzzling over a gradual weakening of the Earth's magnetic field in an area stretching from Africa to South America, which has resulted in technical disturbances in satellites orbiting Earth.

Scientists have resorted to data from the European Space Agency's (ESA) Swarm constellation to probe the disturbing weakening of Earth's magnetic field in the area known as the "South Atlantic Anomaly".

Jurgen Matzka, from the German Research Centre for Geosciences, and a team of experts from the Swarm Data, Innovation and Science Cluster (DISC) have been using data from ESA's Swarm satellite constellation to identify and measure the different magnetic signals that comprise Earth's magnetic field.
"The new, eastern minimum of the South Atlantic Anomaly has appeared over the last decade and in recent years is developing vigorously. We are very lucky to have the Swarm satellites in orbit to investigate the development of the South Atlantic Anomaly. The challenge now is to understand the processes in Earth's core driving these changes," said Matzka.

After a reportedly calm morning, the Corsican capital of Ajaccio was throttled by 103mm (four inches) of rain in just two hours, triggering flash flooding across the city, wreaking havoc on residents and businesses alike.

Intense thunderstorms localized over Ajaccio at around 11:30am local time on Thursday. The flooding began with an initial shower which dropped 40mm (1.5 inches) of rain in half an hour.

The storm then gathered pace as it continued into the afternoon and, after drainage systems were overwhelmed, city workers scrambled to replace burst sewer drain covers.

As eyewitness footage from the scene shows, cars and dumpsters were tossed around like toys by the flood waters.

A storm followed by thunderstorms hit Belgrade on two occasions tonight. A large amount of rain fell and the streets of the capital ended up flooded

Citizens shared the footage on social networks in disbelief. As can be seen in the footage, the cars literally floated in some parts of Belgrade.

Due to the large amount of precipitation, tram and trolley-bus traffic are at a standstill, and movement by public transport is difficult because the buses are overloaded.

The Belgrade bus station is also under water, so the buses could not reach the platform, "Novosti" states.
