Bear expert says British Columbia attack likely a rare case of black bear treating humans as food

Attack on family that sent three people to hospital appears to be a 'predaceous' incident

An expert in bear behaviour says an attack on a family in northeastern British Columbia that left two women with critical injuries appears to have been a rare example of a "predaceous" attack by a black bear.

Ellie Lamb, director of community outreach for the Get Bear Smart Society, says that by knocking down the women near Dawson Creek Monday night then staying close by them for more than an hour, the large boar bear was likely treating humans as food.

RCMP say they shot the bear dead after it was observed "guarding" the injured women, aged 30 and 48, and could not be chased off.

Lamb, a wildlife guide who serves on several B.C. advisory bodies related to human-bear interaction, says bears could exhibit predatory behaviour towards humans if improperly managed at a young age, but this was extremely uncommon.

'Unprecedented bird flu epidemic could presage year-round outbreak', warns bird charity

Nearly 50 million birds have been culled amid efforts to mitigate the spread of the virus, which continues to ravage the Northern Hemisphere.

A highly pathogenic strain of H5N1 influenza, also known as avian flu, that plagued Europe and North America all summer shows no signs of relenting, officials warn. More than 2,600 outbreaks have been reported among domesticated flocks, as well as more than 3,500 cases in wild birds from 37 European countries, according to the latest overview of the epidemic from European Food Safety Authority (EFSA).

"I'm a scientist by training, and like all scientists, I'm used to taking a measured approach and don't take the language I use lightly," Jeff Knott, director of policy for the UK conservation charity, the RSPB, tells National Geographic. "But the severity of the situation and scale of the impact is unprecedented and very, very scary. It's a huge crisis that could turn into a catastrophe unless we get ahead of it."

Comment: Whilst it may be true that incidents of bird flu outbreaks may be on the rise - and in no small part thanks to factory farming practices that slowly destroy the health of livestock - it's also true that at least some of these declared outbreaks seem to serve another agenda, which is to cause deadly disruptions to the food supply:

Argentine scientists worried after spate of whale deaths - 13 in 8 days

At least 13 dead southern right whales have appeared on the coast of the Golfo Nuevo and the Valdes Peninsula.
A string of whale deaths in recent days in southern Argentina have worried scientists, who think a micro-algae could be to blame.

From September 24 to October 2, at least 13 southern right whales died in the Nuevo Gulf close to the Valdes Peninsula in Argentine Patagonia, an area that is a sanctuary and breeding ground for the huge mammals, the Whale Conservation Institute (ICB) said.

Authorities have started performing autopsies on the whales that have been recovered and have begun testing the water and mollusks "to determine the presence of possible biotoxins linked to the proliferation of harmful algal blooms known as red tides," said whale program coordinator Agustina Donini in an ICB statement released Monday.

Signs and Portents: Rare two-headed turtle hatches in Odisha, India

NNNNNNNN
A rare two-headed turtle has hatched at the reptile park of Nandankanan Zoological Park, on the outskirts of Bhubaneswar, reports said on Tuesday.

"One of the two hatchlings born to a turtle, belonging to the rare red-eared slider species, on Monday turned out to be two-headed," said zoo deputy director Sanjeet Kumar.

He further said it could be a case of genetic disorder and needs to be studied by experts.

This is perhaps the first instance of a turtle with two heads being born in Nandankanan. Curators and veterinarians of the zoo are consulting the Wildlife Institute of India (WII) and other experts. It has been kept in a container at the reptile park and zoo officials are trying to provide a suitable environment for the young one, sources said.

The red-eared slider turtle is an attractive animal because of its tiny size and appealing colour.

Signs and Portents: Two-headed snake found in Denmark

A visitor to Kalvebod Fælled in Amager was surprised the other day to come across a snake crossing the road in front of him. And even more shocking, the snake had two heads!

This is the second time in Danish history that a two-headed snake has been documented in the wild.

The first sighting was in Odsherred, which is also in Zealand.

A rare phenomenon

Naturstyrelsen guide Jes Aagaard confessed to TV2 that the only thing he can say with certainty is how big the snake it. He could not confirm how it feeds, how it hunts or which head is dominant.

He believes the extra head formed from a group of cells that were somehow misdirected.

"I can't say what the frequency is, but it's definitely rare. I would call it a small sensation," added Aagaard.

Signs and Portents: Nebraskan man finds rare two-headed snake

A Nebraskan resident was startled to find a bizarre creature while clearing logs in a fire pit outside of his girlfriend's home.

The unusual reptile was found in the city of Clay Center by Joshua Marshall, 45, who said: "I was clearing brush in a fire pit area. I went to move a log and it was underneath. My first reaction was that I thought it was two snakes. Then, when it couldn't decide which way to go, I realised it was one snake with two heads. The snake looked perfectly normal beyond the two heads. I have no idea how the mutation occurred."

Mr Marshall collected the serpent — which was a species of garter snake, native to the area — and placed it in a jar in order to show it to an expert.

Signs and Portents: Rare, two-headed turtle found alive in Thailand

MMMMM
Rarer than a four-leaf clover, a turtle watch volunteer in Thailand found a two-headed hatchling. Even more unusual, they were still alive.

"We encounter this very rarely. This is my first time encountering a two-headed turtle that is still alive," said a member of Lang Tengah Turtle Watch, according to Pen News (who posted video, below). Since 2016, the group has come across only a few double-headed hatchlings out of 88,719 eggs.

Each head reacts independently to outside stimuli, and so far, the right head is the more dominant sibling. The volunteers sent the turtles to a nearby Turtle Conservation group.
