Magnitude 6.7 earthquake hits south of the Philippine capital

quake
An earthquake of magnitude 6.7 struck south of the Philippine capital early on Saturday, the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology said.

The agency said aftershocks were expected from the tectonic earthquake, which had a depth of 116 kilometres (72.08 miles).

Some residents in the capital region were awakened by the quake that lasted nearly a minute.

"The quake was deep so there is no tsunami," Renato Solidum, director of the Seismology agency, told DZRH radio station. "In Manila, the intensity 4.0 or 5.0 is strong but not yet destructive."

A strong earthquake struck off the southern coast of Panama on Wednesday near the border with Costa Rica, although there were no immediate reports of damage and authorities said a tsunami was not expected.

The European-Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC) said the earthquake had a 6.9 magnitude and hit at a depth of 2 km (1.2 miles) about 321 km (200 miles) southeast of Costa Rica's capital, San Jose. The U.S. Geological Survey measured the quake at a 6.8 magnitude.

Quakes of that magnitude can cause severe damage.

"Regarding the earthquake we felt in almost the entire country, we report that we have no damage to public infrastructure or personal injuries," said Alexander Solis, head of Costa Rica's National Emergency Commission.

A Reuters witness said the quake was felt in San Jose.

An earthquake with a magnitude of 6.1 on the Richter scale struck off the coast of Indonesia's Sulawesi island Saturday, said the United States Geological Survey.

As per reports, the strong quake hit 258 kilometres (160 miles) northeast of the city of Manado in North Sulawesi at a depth of 68 kilometres.

Indonesia experiences frequent quakes due to its position on the Pacific "Ring of Fire", an arc of intense seismic activity where tectonic plates collide that stretches from Japan through Southeast Asia and across the Pacific basin.

Earlier, in January, more than 100 people were killed while thousands left homeless by a 6.2-magnitude quake that struck Sulawesi.

A powerful 6.0 magnitude earthquake and dozens of aftershocks have struck the California-Nevada border area, triggering a rockslide in the Sierra Nevada mountain range and reports of shaking from San Francisco to Carson City.

The most powerful jolt, eventually upgraded by the US Geological Survey (USGS) to magnitude 6.0, happened at 3:49pm local time on Thursday, some 150 miles east of Sacramento. Within the next two hours, the area was rattled by over 50 aftershocks ranging between 2.5 and 4.6 on the Richter scale.

The quake was the "result of normal faulting in the shallow crust of the North America plate," USGS said, noting however that there is a small chance this was a foreshock of a larger earthquake, according to CBS Sacramento.
