Azores earthquake: Locals flee Portuguese island after thousands of earthquakes raise fears
The Sao Jorge volcano in the Azores Island chain is in danger of both erupting and producing a large earthquake. As a result, its alert level has been placed at orange due to the detection of a body of magma intruding underneath the island. This intrusion of magma occurred alongside an earthquake swarm where more than 14,000 quakes were detected. The largest of these struck on March 29th, registering in as a magnitude 4.0. This video will discuss the ongoing situation, and mention where an eruption could occur.

This week in Volcano News - Potential eruption in Azores, Mauna Kea earthquake

Azores island prepares to evacuate amid major earthquake fears
Azores island prepares to evacuate amid major earthquake fears
Right now, there are 51 volcanoes actively erupting on the planet. This week's top story regards the Sao Jorge volcano in Portugal, where a shallow intrusion of magma is ongoing. Its alert level was raised three times in a week, and ground deformation and elevated gas levels have been detected. Thus, an eruption might occur in the next few days.

Meanwhile in Chile, the alert level at the Lonquimay volcano was raised to yellow due to a swarm of earthquakes underneath its edifice. And, in Hawaii, a large earthquake occurred underneath the flank of Mauna Kea. This video will discuss these volcano related news stories, as told and analyzed by a volcanologist.

Ring of Fire activity increases today, tremors hit Esmeraldas, Ecuador

quake
A series of earthquakes hitting Esmeraldas in Ecuador on March 26th and today, March 27th 2022.

Three earthquakes hit between 11 at night and 1 in the morning, with the largest measured at 5.8 magnitude on the Richter scale.

Residents ran from their homes as tremors rocked buildings. Power cuts were seen, as electricity supplies were affected.

Buildings were damaged by the earthquakes, with walls showing cracks and windows smashed in homes, businesses and hospitals.

This is the latest in a period of tectonic activity on the Pacific Ring of Fire, including an eruption of the Taal volcano in the Philippines. Authorities are assessing this situation as it develops.

6.7-magnitude earthquake rattles Taiwan

A magnitude 6.7 earthquake that struck off the coast of Taiwan early Wednesday rattled buildings and roused people from their sleep, leaving one injured and causing a half-constructed bridge in the island's east to collapse.

Taiwan is regularly hit by earthquakes as it lies near the junction of two tectonic plates. It does not issue tsunami warnings unless a quake registers at more than magnitude 7.0.

The US Geological Survey initially estimated the 1:41 am (1741 GMT Tuesday) quake to be magnitude 6.9, but downgraded it to 6.6 before finally assessing it back up to 6.7.

It also revised the depth from an initial 10 kilometers (six miles) to 24 km.

Best of the Web: 7.3 magnitude earthquake hits off north Japan, tsunami alert issued - Mag 6.4 aftershock - 2.2 million homes without electricity

A powerful 7.3 magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Fukushima in northern Japan on Wednesday evening, triggering a tsunami advisory and plunging more than 2 million homes in the Tokyo area into darkness.

The region is part of northern Japan that was devastated by a deadly 9.0 quake and tsunami 11 years ago that also triggered nuclear plant meltdowns, spewing massive radiation that still makes some parts uninhabitable.

The Pacific Tsunami Warning Center said there was no longer a tsunami threat though the Japan Meteorological Agency kept its low risk advisory in place. NHK national television said tsunami waves of 20 centimeters (8 inches) already reached shore in Ishinomaki, about 390 kilometers (242 miles) northeast of Tokyo.

NHK footage showed broken walls of a department store building fell to the ground and shards of windows scattered on the street near the main train station in Fukushima city, about 60 kilometers (36 miles) west from the coastline.
