USGS tells Kansans to prep for earthquakes like Californians

Oklahoma's largest earthquake ever still has people talking. Saturday's 5.8 magnitude earthquake caused only minor damage in Kansas, but officials with the US Geological Survey say it's time for people in the region to start preparing for earthquakes like Californians. Items on your wall or shelves can be hazardous in an earthquake, but there are ways you can protect yourself and your belongings.

"It scared me this time," said Errica Weaver. The morning jolt felt across the region didn't skip Weaver's home. "I ran down the hallway and woke my husband up and I was like 'we're having another earthquake'," said Weaver. [T]he earthquake shook pictures off her wall, and caused drawers to slide out of her bedroom dresser. We took Weaver through the FEMA Earthquake Home Hazard Hunt, a guide to eliminate potential dangers in your home in the event of an earthquake.

FEMA recommends you securely fasten or relocate heavy pictures over beds and furniture. We checked Weaver's home and all wall hangings are in safe places. Another suggestion is to secure cabinets to wall studs, and use latches to keep cabinet doors from flying open during an earthquake. Weaver says that's something she'll have to fix in her own home.

FEMA also recommends strapping down TVs and other expensive or hazardous electronics. FEMA emphasizes making sure all heavy objects are secured inside your home. There are also steps you can take outside the home, such as making sure your house is anchored to its foundation.

Comment: The earthquake ties for Oklahoma's strongest earthquake on record, the first coming in November 2011. No major damage was immediately reported. An increase in magnitude 3.0 or greater earthquakes in Oklahoma has been linked to underground disposal of wastewater from oil and natural gas production. State regulators have asked producers to reduce wastewater disposal volumes in earthquake-prone regions of the state.

Some parts of Oklahoma now match northern California for the nation's most shake prone, and one Oklahoma region has a 1 in 8 chance of a damaging quake in 2016, with other parts closer to 1 in 20. An estimated 10 million people felt the earthquake across Oklahoma, Arkansas, Kansas, Missouri, Texas, Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois, Tennessee, and Alabama.

Macedonian authorities say an earthquake with a preliminary magnitude of 5.3 struck on the outskirts of the capital on Sunday, causing minor damage to buildings but no injuries.

The quake occurred just after 3 p.m. (1300 GMT), seismologist Dragana Cernih from the national seismological observatory told The Associated Press.

She said she received reports of cracks in the walls of buildings or collapsed chimneys, as well as damage to roofs in villages around Skopje. But she said there was no indication of people being injured.

The U.S. Geological Survey also gave the quake a preliminary magnitude of 5.3, with its epicenter about four kilometers east-northeast of Skopje, at a depth of 10 kilometers (six miles). The Potsdam-based German Research Centre for Geosciences, or GFZ, gave a magnitude of 5. Earthquake experts often give different estimates of magnitude.

Magnitude 3.5 earthquake shakes southeast Missouri near New Madrid Fault

Earthquake chart
Did you feel it this morning? Another earthquake struck Friday morning along the Mississippi River southeast of Poplar Bluff. The United States Geological Survey says it was a magnitude 3.5 and occurred at 8:45am. That area is near the New Madrid Fault. It was weaker than the tremor that hit in Oklahoma a few days ago.

A 5.6 magnitude earthquake struck Saturday morning near Pawnee, Oklahoma, and rattled through at least six surrounding states in the US heartland, according to the US Geological Survey.

The earthquake was also felt in Kansas, Arkansas, Missouri, Texas, Nebraska, and Iowa, according to USGS geophysicists.

The New Madrid fault line is about twenty times larger than California's famed San Andreas fault. The biggest earthquake in U.S. history happened in the New Madrid seismic zone in 1812. The fault line has been more active over the last few years.

6.0 magnitude earthquake hits northern Peru

Peru earthquake
The jungle region of northern Peru has been struck by an earthquake of 6.0 magnitude, according to the US Geological Survey (USGS). The epicentre was located 50 kilometres (31 miles) north of the city of Moyobamba at a depth of 114 kilometres (70 miles).

According to the USGS map, the quake epicentre is located on the eastern slope of the Andes, where the mountain range meets the Amazon rainforest.

There are no immediate reports of damage or casualties from Saturday's (September 10) tremor, which is 31 miles from the city of Moyobamba. Peru's civilian defense agency said it was continuing to monitor the situation. Local radio stations said the quake was felt in some cities in Peru's centre and east.

According to a 2007 Peruvian census, the city is home to over 40,000 people and is the capital of Peru's San Martin region.

The quake is reported to have happened at 10.08 GMT (11.08 BST). Moyobamba is the capital of the San Martin Region in Peru and has a population of around 42,000. It has over 3,500 species of native orchids and known as the City of Orchids.

Large earthquakes can trigger aftershocks on separate faults within moments causing greater damage

A large earthquake on one fault can trigger large aftershocks on separate faults within just a few minutes, scientists have found. The town of Pescara del Tronto was one of the worst hit with buildings flattened (pictured) by the magnitude 6.2 earthquake that occurred last month
It is well known that earthquakes can cause widespread destruction to buildings and settlements close to the fault lines they occur on.

But according to a new study, the damage can be spread far further by triggering a tidal wave of aftershocks on other faults elsewhere.

A large earthquake on one fault can trigger large aftershocks on separate faults within just a few seconds, scientists discovered.

Scientists at Scripps Institution of Oceanography at the University of California San Diego discovered previously unidentified aftershocks that happened within minutes of big earthquakes.

The discovery is important for the safety of earthquake-prone regions like California - where ruptures on complex fault systems like the San Andreas fault may lead to mega-earthquakes.

In the study, published in the journal Science, geophysicist Professor Peter Shearer and graduate student Wenyuan Fan discovered 48 previously unidentified large aftershocks that occurred between 2004 and 2015.

In one instance along the Sundra arc subduction zone, where the magnitude 9 Sumatra-Andaman mega-earthquake occurred off the coast of Indonesia in 2004 (aftermath pictured), a magnitude 7 quake triggered two large aftershocks over 124 miles (200 kilometre
