Lectins, phytates, & autoimmune disease: Separating fact from fiction

beans, seeds, lectins
Are paleo recommendations to avoid grains and legumes due to anti-nutrient content predicated in science or founded in fear mongering? An evidence-based analysis of the good, the bad, and the ugly when it comes to lectins, phytates, and autoimmune disease.

In the past decade, some paleo diet proponents have popularized the notion that anti-nutrients, or compounds in foods which undermine health, are responsible for the prevailing epidemics of chronic illness. In fact, one of the fundamental tenets of the paleo diet, that grains contribute to disease and degeneration, is due in part to arguments about their content of lectins, some of the most infamous anti-nutrients. This review will serve as a preliminary examination of the evidence and will shed light on whether fears about this and another commonly vilified anti-nutrient, phytic acid, are groundless or justified.

Anatomy 101: The science of stretching

Stretching is instinctive!
© Tari RoseStretching is instinctive!
A student recently asked me why her bones popped while practicing yoga. Technically, I told her, her bones weren't popping. The sounds she's most likely hearing aren't actually from the bones themselves popping or cracking but rather from a number of other sources that are occurring at the joint such as tendon and ligament movement, inadequate vitamin supply, dehydration, or-most commonly-crepitation/cavitation.

Anatomy 101

A joint is the site where two or more bones meet. Joints are essential in helping humans perform various ranges and degrees of locomotion. Some joints are immovable [such as the sutures that connect the various bones that form the collective skull] while others have a slight degree of motion [such as those that comprise the vertebral column]. However, most joints in the human body are capable of a high degree of movement and flexibility. These are called synovial joints. They're often the places that are most susceptible to injury, and the exact places where most people hear those "popping" and "cracking" sounds. Its important to note that while these sounds are a fairly common phenomenon, they can over time be precursors and warning signs to wear and tear of the joint and articular cartilage [arthritis]. So what exactly causes these sounds?

Study finds sulfates kill beneficial gut bacteria

The first scientific study to test the effects of food preservatives on beneficial bacteria has been published, and the results do not bode well for our health. Researchers from the University of Hawai'i Maui College have found that sulfites in food preservatives, generally recognized as safe for consumption at levels of 5000 ppm (parts per million) or less, killed or inhibited the growth of beneficial bacteria at levels of 3780 ppm or less. In the words of lead researcher Dr. Sally V. Irwin,
Studies show a significant increase over the past 40 years in food allergies, obesity, and metabolic disorders that have a direct correlation to disbiosis, or changes in the microbiome...In trying to understand what in our environment may be causing this change, the use of many food preservatives and their effects on beneficial bacteria came to mind."

After months of deliberation the WHO declares medical marijuana has no public health risks and should not be withheld from patients

cannabis
© Brian GoodmanThe WHO has declared medical marijuana is beneficial for cancer, epilepsy, Alzheimer's, Parkinson's and other diseases, and does not carry an addiction risk.
The World Health Organization has declared that CBD - the relaxant property of cannabis used in medical marijuana - should not be a scheduled drug.

As legalization of cannabis has spread rapidly across the United States and around the world, health officials have cautioned that we do not have enough research to rule out any down sides.

But today, after months of deliberation and investigation, the WHO has concluded that cannabidiol (CBD) is a useful treatment for epilepsy and palliative care, and does not carry any addiction risks.

Monsanto's Glyphosate leaves environmentalists' strategy in tatters

RoundUp
Roundup (Glyphosate)
The ecology of Planet Earth is rapidly collapsing under a rising tide of toxic pollution and plastic waste as, in every sector of the economy, natural products and methods are replaced with synthetics. One example, just recently reported, is that in 1974 non-organic wheat production in the UK required 2 sprays per year. In 2014 UK wheat required 20.7 sprays.

The chief strategy of the environmental movement to stem the toxic tide is to challenge specific "bad actor" chemicals and force their withdrawal from the market. Occasionally, this has been successful. Many countries no longer spray DDT or lindane, for example. But given that there are 70-100,000 man-made chemicals on the market, most of which aren't tested and may be toxic, this effort is likely to be successfully concluded in approximately the year 1 million AD. Assuming that is, the chemical industry doesn't invent any new products in the meantime, and that removing a toxic chemical only takes ten years of campaigning effort, both of which assumptions are very optimistic.

Degeneration of society: Half of UK youth have unprotected sex with new partners

England morality
UK teens are out of control
Almost half of young Britons admit they've had unprotected sex with a new partner, a new poll reveals. Despite relentless safe-sex ads, youth are still exposing themselves to sexually transmitted diseases.

According to a YouGov poll, 47 percent of sexually active people in the UK aged between 16 and 24 chose not to wear a condom during their first sexual encounter with a new partner. One in ten have admitted they have never used a condom in their entire life.

In response to the findings, Public Health England has launched the first Government sexual health campaign in eight years, the so-called Protect Against STIs, which seeks to promote condom use in the most effective way.

The campaign aims to raise awareness about the consequences of STIs, which include infertility, pelvic inflammatory disease, and even meningitis. It also highlights how easy it is to contract an infection, given they are symptom-less and it is therefore hard to tell whether your partner has an STI.

Comment: Most things transmitted during sex are 'symptom-less', but they're still working away on you and contributing to a build-up of health and psychological issues that will hit you later.

You are what you're infected with?

High-Intensity workouts good for memory function (and a lot more)

If you only pick one exercise, choose high-intensity interval training.
© CLEM ONOJEGHUO
Researchers have suggested that exercise is "the best preventive drug" for many common ailments, from psychiatric disorders to heart disease, diabetes and cancer.1 Even your risk for age-related hearing loss is reduced through exercise.2 Physical fitness has also been linked to brain health, and is an important adjunct strategy to prevent dementia.

In fact, compelling evidence shows that physical exercise helps build a brain that not only resists shrinkage, but increases cognitive abilities3 and creativity. Researchers at Stanford University found that walking can increase creativity up to 60 percent.4,5 Even a casual stroll around your office can be helpful when you're short on solutions.

Even more importantly, we now know that exercise promotes a process known as neurogenesis, i.e., your brain's ability to adapt and grow new brain cells, regardless of your age. Exercise also promotes mental health by normalizing insulin resistance and boosting natural "feel good" hormones and neurotransmitters associated with mood control, including endorphins, serotonin, dopamine, glutamate and GABA.

Mainstream media tells parents should give 3-year-old children dangerous drugs for treating depression

toddler drugs
Big Pharma's subtle propaganda comes in many forms. Those tuning in to mainstream media programs will be subjected to nightly advertisements, many of which feature highly addictive and dangerous antidepressants. But a recent news story warning that 3-year-olds could be suffering from depression and should be evaluated by doctors shows that the industry will stop at nothing until all Americans are on drugs.

NBC's feature story on depression used scare tactics in its title to imply and suggest a national depression crisis among toddlers. "Generation at risk: America's youngest facing mental health crisis," the title reads. While the nation is facing an opiate crisis caused by Big Pharma's highly addictive production and distribution of opiates, one would be hard-pressed to find many Americans who believe the nation's toddlers and children are mentally ill.

The article's authors are Kate Snow and Cynthia McFadden. They write:
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention reports that 1 in 5 American children ages 3 through 17-about 15 million-have a diagnosable mental, emotional or behavioral disorder in a given year.
Did you catch that? They are trying to convince readers that children as young as 3 years old suffer from mental illness. The article goes on to claim that the children simply need to be diagnosed in order to be treated, prompting readers with troubled children to consider taking their babies to psychiatrists or medical doctors.

Babies born near fracking sites are at risk of lower birth weight, poorer health - study

Fracking
© Global Look PressWilliamsport, Pennsylvania, United States.
The 29,000 babies born each year in the US whose mothers live within 1 km of a fracking site are at risk of serious adverse health effects, likely due to the pollution produced by the hydraulic fracturing (fracking) technology, claims a new massive study.

Authored by a research team from Princeton, UCLA and the University of Chicago and published in Science Advances, the paper studied the impact of fracking on 1.1 million births in Pennsylvania between 2004 and 2013.

"The results of our analysis suggest that the introduction of fracking reduces health among infants born to mothers living within 3 km of a well site during pregnancy. For mothers living within 1 km, we find a 25% increase in the probability of low birth weight (birth weight < 2500 g) and significant declines in average birth weight and in an index of infant health," write the authors.

The paper says that it is impossible to identify the exact mechanisms responsible for the effect, but blame both water pollution resulting from contamination of local supplies and air pollution from the "fracturing fluid" used to develop the wells, as well as emissions from the well products themselves.
