Rare cholera outbreak on Vancouver Island

Herring Egg Branches
© Associated PressHealth officials have linked a rare cholera outbreak on Vancouver Island to consumption of contaminated herring eggs.
As many as four people have been infected with cholera in British Columbia, in what health officials are calling an extremely rare case.

Dr. Shannon Waters, a medical health officer with Island Health, said the individuals likely contracted the illness after eating herring eggs harvested on the coast of Vancouver Island.

Testing is still under way to determine the exact strain of the bacterial infection, she said.

"This is unique. We have not seen this before in B.C.," Waters said.

Symptoms of cholera include nausea, vomiting and diarrhea that can lead to extreme dehydration.

Cholera may be passed person-to-person, but is usually contracted from bacteria in food or water sources infected with fecal matter, Waters said.

Forget McDonald's - Farmed salmon is the new toxic 'junk food'

salmon farm
If you're aware of the health benefits of animal-based omega-3 fats and the fact that salmon is a great source, you may be shocked to discover that farmed salmon has more in common with junk food than health food. This is the grim reality revealed in Nicolas Daniel's documentary "Fillet-Oh-Fish," which includes exclusive footage from fish farms and factories across the globe.

Among the experts featured is Kurt Oddekalv, a respected Norwegian environmental activist who claims salmon farming is an unmitigated disaster, both from an environmental and human health perspective. Below the salmon farms dotted across the Norwegian fjords is a layer of waste some 15 meters (49.2 feet) deep, teeming with bacteria, drugs and toxic pesticides, and since the farms are located in open water, this pollution is in no way contained.

Farmed salmon also pose a more direct toxic threat to your health. Fish has always been considered a health food, but food testing reveals that today's farmed salmon is one of the most toxic foods in the world. As noted by the producers of the film, "through intensive farming and global pollution, the flesh of the fish we eat has turned into a deadly chemical cocktail."1

Radiation dangers and concerning health risks linked to 5G cellular technology

5g towers
Like it or not we're rapidly moving into the world of 5G, or 5th generation cellular telecommunications.

Why?

Because the frequency bandwidths used currently by cell phones and similar technologies are becoming saturated.

And also because we live in a world where people want more. 5G, and the Internet of Things (IoT) that goes with it, promises to give us more.

But more what?

Super-Fast Download Speeds

5G and IoT promises to connect us in our homes, schools, workplaces, cities, parks and open spaces to over a trillion objects around the world. It promises cars that drive themselves, washing machines that order their own washing powder and softener plus of course super fast downloads and streaming.

According to Fortune.com 5G will support at least 100 billion devices and will be 10 to 100 times faster than current 4G technology. (4G was already about 10 times faster than 3G).

Sneeze on a plane: Where to sit to avoid catching an infection from your fellow travelers

The window seat of an airplane doesn't just offer the best views, it also gives you the best chance of avoiding picking up an infection from your fellow travelers. That's according to a study from the University of Florida.

Planes are considered a hotbed for bacteria with more than a dozen cases of inflight transmission of diseases documented in recent times. Research has also shown that the outbreak of newly emerging diseases such as SARS and pandemic influenza is enabled by air travellers.

Coffee

Morning brew: What is going on in our bodies and our brains when we have that first cup of coffee?

coffee
In many cultures around the world, coffee is consumed daily. For many people it is their first thought and what gets them out of bed in the morning, for others it's an excuse to get together with friends or family and socialize. What we often fail to realize is that coffee, or more specifically caffeine, is a drug. In reality it is a highly addictive stimulant, which is in the same category of cocaine and methamphetamine. As with any drugs, if abused it can have some consequences.

Caffeine is actually the most commonly used psychoactive drug in the world - yep, that's right, psychoactive. The majority of people who drink coffee are addicted, and if for some reason coffee is not available, withdrawal symptoms will occur, generally the symptoms include a foggy head and a headache that don't seem to go away until you've had your fix. If you ever wondered what exactly caffeine is doing to your brain, then look no further.

Sleep deprived? The effects of sleep impairment on the brain

sleep
© Akos Nagy/Shutterstock.comAs many as 70 million Americans may not be getting enough sleep. Men get fewer hours of sleep than women.
As we prepare to "spring forward" for daylight saving time on March 11, many of us dread the loss of the hour's sleep we incur by moving our clocks forward. For millions, the loss will be an added insult to the inadequate sleep they experience on a daily basis.

Surveys show that 40 percent of American adults get less than the nightly minimum of seven hours of sleep recommended by the American Academy of Sleep Medicine and the National Sleep Foundation. The National Institutes for Health estimate that between 50 million and 70 million people do not get enough sleep. These recommendations for minimal sleep are based on a review of many scientific studies evaluating the role of sleep in our bodies and the effects of sleep deprivation on our ability of our body to function at our peak performance level.

I am a neurologist at the University of Florida who has studied the effects of both traumatic brain injury and sleep impairment on the brain. I have seen the effects of sleep impairment and the significant effects it can have.

Vaccines and the antibiotic resistance crisis

bacteria
Ever since the discovery of the antibiotic commonly known as penicillin in the late-1920s, antibiotic drugs have transformed the face of modern medicine.1 Antibiotics have historically played an instrumental role in successfully treating bacterial infections.2 However, the overuse and misuse of these medications over the last few decades has created many challenges, including the growing problem of antibiotic resistant bacteria.

In 1954, Sir Alexander Fleming, the Scottish physician and pharmacist who discovered penicillin, warned that the misuse of antibiotics would result in a era of antibiotic resistant bacteria.3 Antibiotic resistance occurs when an antibiotic drug loses its ability to effectively control or kill bacterial growth to which they were once sensitive.4

A growing stink - bothered by fragrance?

fragrance
"More and more, I walk into homes, stores and businesses and am greeted with an immediate blast of perfumed air. . . . And what is added scent but a chemical? Why breathe that in constantly?"

When a Washington Post reader wrote the comments above and implored me to write an article about how to avoid scented products, I was an easy sell. I find artificially perfumed products so distracting that I have trouble concentrating in their presence. I can't stand to have certain brands of dryer sheets in my house, even in an unopened box in the basement. And I confess that I once sneaked an air freshener out of an Uber and tossed it in the trash!

'Game-changer': Chemotherapy combined with stem cell treatment for multiple sclerosis

Caroline Wyatt stem-cell transplant

Stem cell transplants are dramatically better than standard drugs at halting the spread of multiple sclerosis and relieving its symptoms, according to the largest study of its kind.

Doctors have hailed "game-changing" international research which makes the strongest case yet for rolling out aggressive chemotherapy which can stop the most advanced types of MS. The treatment destroys the patient's faulty immune system before rebooting it with an injection of their stem cells and bone marrow.

About 100,000 Britons suffer from MS, which attacks nerves in the brain and spinal cord, but at present the transplant is for people with severe, relapsing remitting forms who have not taken to drug treatment.

Comment: Sounds like a very aggressive procedure - destroying the immune system with chemotherapy to then 'reboot' it with stem cell therapy. One wonders if the stem cell therapy on its own wouldn't suffice. Especially as MS seem related to the lack of some chemical elements in the body due to absorption problems, making the insulating covers of nerve cells crumbly.

Wild oregano oil and its many health benefits

oregano oil
Here's why vaccines are unnecessary: They are merely given purportedly to immunize against or shall it be said 'prevent' certain diseases, most of which are rarely fatal in first world countries. These are mostly transitory viral conditions. There are safer, less invasive answers.

Wild oregano oil is the key alternative. If it is from a truly wild source, then, it can be taken aggressively: as much as needed. Yet, for the typically immunized conditions only a modest amount is necessary, for instance, for chicken pox, measles, and mumps: like a few drops several times daily.

Wild oregano oil can also be rubbed topically on the feet, shins, and upper chest. It can even be used topically on newborns and infants. Babies and toddlers can take a tiny amount internally, like a drop or two twice daily. In this regard it is far safer than all standard drugs, like antibiotics, cough syrups, and even infant vitamins. - Dr. Cass Ingram Researcher, Speaker & Author of 34 books
Yes, some very big claims are being made here, and when we have been told for so many years that diseases are only prevented by vaccines, this may be incredulous to believe.

However, could there be a lot of truth to this? Are vaccines the only answer for keeping infectious diseases, viruses, bacterial infections and super bugs at bay?

The industry is predicted to be worth 61 Billion - and that is regarding its profits - by the year 2020.
