Two Summit County snowshoers and a dog were buried and killed by an avalanche on Saturday.

According to the Colorado Avalanche Information Center, the party triggered the snow slide around noon on Saturday.

The Summit County Sheriff's Office and volunteers from the Summit County Rescue Group and Flight for Life began searching areas west of Hoosier Pass after the party was overdue for a check-in. Officials found an avalanche on a flank of North Star Mountain, between Breckenridge and Fairplay.

An avalanche rescue dog located the two hikers and their dog, all buried beneath avalanche debris and dead.

CAIC reports that the avalanche broke about 400 feet wide ran about 250 vertical feet.

Authorities will visit the site on Monday for a more in-depth investigation.

A powerful earthquake measuring 6.6 has sent tremors across a region around Cyprus in the Mediterranean with reports of people feeling their houses shake.

The quake was at a depth of 2 km (1.24 miles), said the European Mediterranean Seismological Centre (EMSC).

It was centred 30 miles west-northwest of the town of Polis in Cyprus around 1am local time and the tremor was felt across the island and the region, including reports from as far away as Turkey, Israel and Lebanon.

There are no reports of damage or injuries.

But people have taken to social media having felt the force of the earthquake.


Comment: If confirmed as a 6.6M, it would be the strongest earthquake on the island since 1996.

People in Fiji are being warned of flash floods due to a category 1 tropical cyclone
Tropical Cyclone Cody is slowly moving away from Fiji but emergency management authorities say lingering heavy rain continues to create high risk for the country amid a third wave of the coronavirus.

The category 1 storm left one person dead, caused widespread flooding which forced close to 2,000 people to flee their homes and seek shelter at 110 evacuation centres activated across Fiji.

Minister for Rural and Maritime Development and Disaster Management Inia Seruiratu said the capital Suva was spared by Cody, but it had belted the whole of the main island Viti Levu with heavy rains since late last week.


Flash flooding was reported across the country and Seruiratu said Cody may intensify to a category 2 storm as it moved south west out of Fiji.

"This will mean that flooding will continue to be a concern to us.

Constant snow falling on Manaslu has pushed everyone away. "[In the] last week we had almost three metres of snow, so we decided to get everyone down to Samagaon, all the Sherpas, all the climbers, the whole group," Simone Moro reported on Saturday.

Two helicopters evacuated most of the expedition members, although a few, including Sophie Lenaerts and Stef Maginelle of Belgium, walked down to the village. "The descent from Base Camp was a bit dangerous because of snow slides," they reported.

"[Of all my] 21 winter expeditions, this one is proving to be particularly hard," Simone Moro admitted.

Unlike the rest of the climbers, who settled in Samagaon, Alex Txikon, Moro, and two others flew all the way back to Kathmandu. Here, they are arranging to fly a resupply of oxygen and cooking fuel to BC. They themselves will wait for conditions to improve before returning to Base Camp. "This is not possible at the moment," Moro wrote.

Imperatriz faced another day of heavy rains since dawn this Monday, which made the Tocantins river rise 3 meters above its normal level, causing many flooding points in many parts of the municipality.

According to the Imperatriz Municipal Civil Defense and Protection Superintendence, it rained 120mm in just 13 hours, equivalent to two months of rain in the entire city. The municipality of Bacuri, located in the extreme north of Maranhão, was also affected by heavy rains that dawn, which caused flooding due to the flood of the Bacuri River.

According to the Civil Defense technical team, more than 500 families were affected by the floods, 130 of which are homeless and 58 homeless. The alert informs that the forecast is for rain in excess of 100 millimeters per hour, starting on Tuesday.

At least 7 people have lost their lives in severe flash flooding that struck parts of Eastern Cape Province in South Africa.

Heavy rainfall on 08 January 2022 triggered the floods which affected areas of Mthatha, Buffalo City Metropolitan Municipality, the township of Mdantsane and areas of East London. According to figures from World Meteorological Organization (WMO), East London recorded 58 mm of rain in 24 hours to 09 January.

Buffalo City Metro Municipality (BCMM) government activated its disaster management teams in response to the torrential rains which "left scores of houses as well as informal settlements in and around the metro severely damaged".

Powerful winds during and since the significant snowfall over the last week in Rocky Mountain National Park have resulted in six to 12-foot snow drifts in the area, according to officials. Snow and icy conditions are proving to be an obstacle for crews that are trying to clear the roads.

"This morning, snow and wind at higher elevations are again hampering efforts," said Management Specialist and Public Affairs Officer for the park, Kyle Patterson on Saturday in an email.

The Fall River Entrance, Beaver Meadows Entrance and Wild Basin Entrance to the park remain closed to vehicles as crews work.

"Park snowplow operators are encountering drifts from 6 to 12 feet along sections of park roads above 8,500 feet. A drift above Hollowell Park, along Bear Lake Road at approximately 9,000 feet, is 300 yards long, 8 feet deep, and covers the full width of the road surface," Patterson said.
