A 71-year-old woman was gored by a bull bison Wednesday at Yellowstone National Park, marking the second such incident at the park within three days and the third so far in 2022.

The woman, from West Chester, Pa., and her daughter "inadvertently approached the bison as they were returning to their vehicle at the trailhead," the park wrote in a statement.

The bison charged at the 71-year-old, who suffered non-life-threatening injuries and was transported to a hospital in Cody, Wyo.

Comment: Live Science notes:
This is not the first time Yellowstone has experienced a period of increased attacks. Between May and July 2015, five people were injured by bison, according to a 2016 report by the CDC(opens in new tab). The highest number of attacks occurred between 1983 and 1985 when 33 people were injured, the report stated. Frequently occurring bison attacks have also been documented in other parks, such as Antelope Island State Park in Utah, where one individual was involved in two separate attacks just three months apart in 2019.

Several trails and backcountry campgrounds in Kananaskis Country are closed due to lingering snow conditions at higher elevations into the summer.

Five backcountry campgrounds in Peter Lougheed and Spray Lakes provincial parks, including Lillian Lake, Ribbon Lake, Aster Lake, Three Isle Lake and Turbine remain closed until at least July 6.

An avalanche hazard warning is also in place until further notice.

Officials say the snowpack melt in Kananaskis is approximately four weeks behind typical melt this year, and although it may be summer, snowy trail conditions persist and avalanches continue to be possible.

"In the past, we have delayed the opening of select sub-alpine backcountry campgrounds; however, we cannot recall a season quite like this one," said John Muir, director of communications for Alberta Environment and Parks in an email.
