Comment: On the same day a sperm whale washed ashore in near Grimsby in the UK:
A ten-metre sperm whale is feared to have died after it washed up on the east coast of England in Lincolnshire.

British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) was called at about 12.15pm on Good Friday to help with a 'large stranded whale' on the beach at Cleethorpes, near Grimsby.

The marine mammal response charity said the whale had been spotted 'upright in the water' at about midday, but by the time it reached the beach it was stranded on its side.

A BDMLR spokesperson said: 'Unfortunately, the tide was rising quickly and therefore there was no way for BDMLR medics to safely access the whale, and it was soon under the water.

'The beach safety team were able to show our medics CCTV footage of the whale before it became submerged, and it did appear to have passed away.'

A large tornado tore through southeastern Missouri before dawn on Wednesday, killing at least five people and causing widespread destruction as a broad swath of the Midwest and South kept a wary eye out for further storms that could spawn additional twisters and hail.

The tornado touched down around 3:30 a.m. and moved through a rural area of Bollinger County, about 50 miles (80 kilometers) south of St. Louis, said Sgt. Clark Parrott of the Missouri State Highway Patrol.

Trees were uprooted and homes turned into piles of splinters. One building was flipped on its side. Drone footage showed emergency crews peering into the wreckage with flashlights.

More than 20 agencies were part of the search for survivors and victims, with the damage so bad that they sometimes were forced to use chainsaws to cut back trees and brush to reach homes, Parrott said.

A 14ft-long smalltooth sand tiger shark washed up at Kilmore Quay in Co Wexford on Saturday.

Scientists believe this is the first official record of the species being found in Ireland's waters.

The smalltooth sand tiger shark, scientifically called Odontaspis ferox, is a species rarely encountered by humans as it is normally found in water more than 100m deep.

Shark biologist Dr Nicholas Payne, an assistant professor in Trinity College Dublin's (TCD) school of natural sciences, "could not believe it" when he received an email from a Swiss tourist who discovered the shark while walking on Saturday.

Romania gripped by cold weather, snow ahead of Orthodox Easter

mmmm
Romania is in the grips of weather specific to winter, such as low temperatures, blizzards and snow. These days, planes were grounded, schools shut and roads were blocked in several parts of the country due to snowfall and strong winds.

The meteorological service ANM issued orange and yellow code warnings and an information notice valid until Saturday, April 8.

"There is a cyclone formed south of the country, which brought significant amounts of precipitation, but at the same time, an atmospheric front of polar origin that brought temperature values that are currently 8-12 degrees Celsius below the multi-year averages," Elena Mateescu, director-general of ANM, told Digi24. She added that temperatures may rise over the next week to around 14-17 degrees, but that rains will persist as well.

"We will have weather close to the thermal norm of the date for Palm Sunday, and for Easter, at this moment, temperature values are estimated to be throughout the country between 14 to 17-18 degrees, including in the capital," said the meteorologist.

Freezing rain and thunderstorms pummeled parts of Ontario and Quebec on Wednesday, knocking out power for about 800,000 people, officials reported.

Quebec's power utility said shortly after 5 p.m. that more than 676,000 of its 4.5 million customers had no electricity as much of the province remained under a freezing rain warning.

"What's causing the outages is the mixture of precipitation and wind," Hydro-Québec spokeswoman Gabrielle Leblanc said. "It weighs down the vegetation. There can be branches and trees that fall on the lines."

In Montreal, more than 316,000 customers had lost power, while 171,000 people were hit with outages in the Montérégie region, south of the city.

Elderly woman mauled to death by pitbulls in Cape Town, South Africa

PIT BULL ATTACK
The body of an 88-year-old Cape Town woman is believed to have only been discovered several hours after her neighbour's two pit bulls attacked and mauled her in her backyard.

Olga Grill died after her neighbour's dogs assailed her in her backyard in Bonteheuwel on Tuesday. She is believed to have been hanging her laundry when the pair jumped over the fence and attacked.

Her heartbroken son, Graham Woodman, 68, left home in the early hours of the morning for work. He had made her breakfast to tide her over until her carer arrived at 10:00.

His mother was fiercely independent, Woodman said. She preferred to take care of herself, insisting that she could cook and clean for herself, despite his offers to do the household chores for her.
